Lyons edges Jacobs in 8 innings

By Drake Skleba

LISLE – Lyons Township junior second baseman Sam Cybulski was struggling at the plate in the 2012 IHSCBA/Lawler Summer State Tournament, going 1-for-8 before he stepped to the plate with bases loaded and no outs in a 4-4 battle with Jacobs in the bottom of the eighth.

Cybulski's walk-off single to right scored senior Mike Lorenz with the game-winner, as LT defeated Jacobs 5-4. With the win, Lyons Township (32-4-1) will meet Joliet Catholic Academy (19-3) for the 2012 Phil        Lawler State Championship Game at 7 on Saturday night at Benedictine University.

“Felt awesome to get the game-winner,” said Cybulski. “I had a tough game and it was great to come through for us. I went up their looking for a strike and hit the ball hard.”

LT jumped out to a 4-0 lead after four innings of play. Starting pitcher Tom Prescott picked up a pair of RBI by walking twice with the bases loaded.

Winning pitcher junior Sam Heilenbach drove home the fourth LT run with a sac-fly in the fourth.

Jacobs scored a pair in the fifth and sixth to deadlock the contest at 4-4.

Golden Eagle second baseman Matt Hickey and junior Grant Kale picked up RBI for Jacobs.

Heilenbach fired two scoreless innings in relief of Prescott.

Lorenz led off the Lion 8th with a booming double. The double was his third hit of the game and the seventh of the tournament for Lion RF.

“It was a great game. Both teams played well and we came away with a great win,” said Lorenz. “I wanted to get on base in the eighth. I hit the ball well today.  We beat JCA once in this tournament but it'll be a brand-new ball game and we have to go out and play well to beat them again.”

All-Stater Keith Lehmann ripped a single with Lorenz stopping at third. Jacobs head coach Jamie Murray elected to intentionally walk Prescott. Moments later Cybulski put .097 points on his batting average.

“Sam had been struggling at the plate,” said LT head coach George Ushela. “Sam's a young kid who had hit well this summer. It was great to see him get the game-winner.
