Nonconference

No. 24 Mundelein (8-1) defeated Cary-Grove 7-0 behind a no-hitter from University of Iowa–bound LHP Ryan Borucki. Borucki, who is ranked No. 1 by the PBR in the Class of 2012, struck out 13 Trojan hitters to improve to 3-0.

Borucki’s no-no was thrown at the Miner Classic in Marion. In the second game of the day at the Miner Classic in Marion, No. 24 Mundelein (9-1) received its second no-no of the day, this time from Mustang Matt Langleie, who struck out seven as the Mustangs routed Shawnee 10-0 in six innings. 

Alton (6-0) shutout Wheaton Warrenville South 3-0, behind Redbird juniors Ray Bailey (2-0) and Charlie Howard. The two junior pitchers combined to no-hit the Tigers. Redbird junior LF Ron Wisnaski had two hits and drove in a big Redbird run. 

Catholic League Crossovers

Fenwick (6-0; 1-0 CCL White) won a Catholic League crossover with Leo 5-0 on Wednesday. Friar Joe Patzelt improved to 2-0 on the mound for the Friars and helped himself with three hits.

Gordon Tech (7-1, 1-0 CCL White) won a Catholic League crossover with  Seton Academy 6-1 behind junior LHP Nick Huber, who fired a three-hitter at the Sting with 11 strikeouts.

De La Salle (5-2; CCL White 1-0) destroyed St. Francis de Sales, 15-0 in a five-inning Catholic League Crossover.

Nonconference

No. 2 St. Laurence (6-0) defeated Harlan 5-1. Viking senior 1B Brandon Mallder had the big blow for the Vikings with a bases-clearing triple. 6-foot-7 Viking senior Declan McCarron (2-0) picked up the win on the mound for STL and was 2-for-2 at the plate.

No. 4 Joliet Catholic Academy (2-0) blanked Marmion 4-0 behind five one-hit innings by Hilltopper senior RHP Chris Blatti (1-0) and a three-hit day by junior SS Chris Tschida. Tschida hammered his first dinger of 2012 and had three hits and drove home three of the four Hilltopper runs.

No. 5 Mt. Carmel (8-0) smashed Washington 12-2 in six innings on Wednesday. Caravan junior RHP Mike Pilas (2-0) fired a four-hitter at the Patriots. Junior 2B Beau Filkins had a 3-for-4 day at the plate including a triple. Junior Jason Gasser had two hits, including an RBI triple as the Caravan rolled to their eighth straight win.

No. 7 Marian Catholic (5-0) defeated Crete-Monee 5-1 on Wednesday as Spartan junior C Brent Feldner had two hits and two RBI to lead MC. Senior LHP Mike Weissenhofer (1-0) picked up the win on the mound for the Spartans.  

No. 8 Simeon (7-1) rallied past Stagg 2-1 on Wednesday. Trailing 1-0 as another classic pitchers’ duel ensued at 87th and Vincennes, the Wolverines stunned their guests from Stagg with two runs in the bottom of the sixth.

EIU-recruit junior SS Marshawn Taylor started the Wolverine come-back with a booming triple and scored the tying run on a sac-fly by Louisville-recruit junior Corey Ray. Later in the inning Wolverine junior 2B Ronell Coleman singled home the eventual game-winner. 

Freshman LHP Terrance Robertson (3-0) fired six innings of one-run ball to pick up the win. Sophomore Darius Day nailed down the save by slamming the door on Stagg (2-7) in the top of the seventh.

No. 9 Oak Park (4-0) outslugged Willowbrook 9-8 in a West Suburban crossover matchup on Wednesday. Seton Hall-bound Zach Weigel tripled home a pair of runs for the Huskies.

No. 10 Oak Forest (2-1) rebounded from its loss to Andrew by putting 20 on Rich Central behind Bengal sophomore Colton Charbonneau, who had a pair of hits and plated five Bengal runs in a 20-10 slugfest. Bengal senior C John Zubek drove home four runs with a pair of hits.

No. 11 New Trier (3-0) defeated St. Charles North 4-2 at the Miner Classic in Marion on Wednesday. Bucknell-bound RHP Austin Zimmerman (1-0) picked up the win on the mound for the Trevians. Northwestern-bound OF Josh Perlmutter was 2-for-2 with a pair of RBI.

Bartonville Limestone (8-2) swept No. 16 Downers Grove South 4-3 and 4-2 on Wednesday in Bartonville. In game one, DGS Junior RHP Zach Burdi, who is ranked No. 3 in the Class of 2013, suffered the loss in his first start of the season. In game two, Limestone’s Zach Jewell singled in two runs in the third inning to give the Rockets a 4-2 lead they would not relinquish. DGS falls to 3-2. 

No. 17 Plainfield North (4-0) smashed Naperville North 11-4. Tiger junior Kurt Palandech and sophomores Colton Smith and Zach Zyburt all drove in a pair of Tiger runs.

No. 23 Maine South (4-1) suffered its fist loss of the season at Parkway Central (MO). 6-2. Parkway Central improves to 2-4.

Andrew (4-1), which put 20 on Oak Forest and Kyle Funkhouser on Tuesday, slowed down a tad and only put 16 on the board on Wednesday. T-Bolt senior Justin Rzesczutko, who had two-bombs on Tuesday, added three more on Wednesday and drove home four RBI in the T-Bolt’s 16-11 win over TF South.

Andrew junior 3B Dan Durkin, who was 5-for-5 against Oak Forest, had an off-day with only two hits and three RBI for the rampaging T-Bolts.

Mount Vernon (8-2) slipped past Montini 2-1 on Wednesday. Ram junior Tyler Ellis (2-0) threw an eight-hitter with seven strikeouts to pick up the win. Junior Hayden Poninski came up with the game-winner when he singled home a pair of runs in the second inning. 

Benton (7-1) defeated Hamilton County 13-3 on Wednesday. Ranger senior Mason Childers continued his assault on the baseball with another 3-for-3 day with five RBI. Childers doubled and tripled among his three hits. Ranger senior C Trey Garrett chipped in with two hits and two RBI, making a winner out of Ranger starting pitcher Beau Gibbs (1-0).

Ottawa improved to 4-0 on the season following an 8-1 victory over the visiting Seneca Irish. Pirate Tyler Skolek drove in three runs.  Pirate junior SS Miguel Hermosillo had a single and an RBI on the day for the undefeated Pirates.

No. 3 Normal West invades Ottawa on Saturday.

Highland Park (3-3) beat Von Steuben 10-6 behind future Fighting Illini C Jason Goldstein. Goldstein stepped to the plate with the bases full of Giants in the bottom of the seventh and the score tied 6-6. Goldstein untied the game as he blasted a walk-off grand-slam homer out of Wolters Field and sent the Giant fans gathered home very happy.

Highland (4-0) outslugged Burlington Central 9-7 on Wednesday. Bulldog junior Mitch Carriger had a 3-for-4 day with a double and two RBI to lead the ‘Dogs past Burlington Central (4-3)  Junior Jake Haberer chipped in with two hits and drove home two Bulldog runs.

Illinois Valley Central (5-0) beat Dunlap 9-5 on Wednesday. Grey Ghost junior 3B Mitch Meyers had three hits, including a homer and drove home four IVC runs.

Nashville (7-0) blanked Carlyle 4-0 behind a three-hitter from senior RHP John Goodrich. Goodrich’s battery-mate junior C Brock Wuebbles singled home a pair of runs in the Hornet’s big four-run fourth.

Glenbrook South (4-2) hammered Zion Benton 14-2 in five innings. Titan junior LHP Kyle Pauly (1-1) struck out 11 Z-B hitters and fired in his complete-game performance. Northwestern-bound Zach Jones had a single, double and two triples and drove home six Titan runs to lead the Titans to their third consecutive victory.

Yorkville (3-2-1) blasted Coal City 12-1 in five innings. Fox senior RHP Derek Piszcek picked up the win on the mound and senior 3B Luis Correa led the Fox attack with three RBI.

Leyden (6-0) nipped Hoffman Estates 2-1 on Wednesday behind Eagle starting pitcher Anthony Aleman (2-0), who allowed a run and a hit in five quality innings on the mound for the undefeated Eagles. Eagle closer Jeremy Conradson slammed the door on the Hawks in the sixth and seventh to nail down his second save of the season. 

Troy Triad (3-1) blanked Bluff Lakes 5-0 on Wednesday. Seniors Aaron Range (1-1) and Ty Lewis combined fro a two-hit shutout. Knight senior Dylan Johnson had two hits and plated a Knight run.

Glenbrook North (4-1) pounded Fort Zumwalt South 16-5 behind Spartan senior OF Chad Bruce, who hammered a grandslam and drove home five Spartan runs. 

Glenbard West (6-1) slipped past West Chicago 8-7 on Wednesday. Hilltopper junior RHP Dan Simoniet (1-0) allowed just two earned runs in his 6 2/3 inning stint on Wednesday.

Aurora Central Catholic (3-0) rolled to its third consecutive victory, defeating Plano 8-5. Charger junior RHP Matt Miller improved to 2-0 on the mound with a solid five inning performance allowing but one run and four singles while striking out seven Reaper hitters.

Lincoln-Way West (6-1) destroyed Peotone 13-3 in five innings. Warrior Luke Morgan had a pair of hits and plated three Warrior runs.

Homewood-Flossmoor (2-0) rallied past Bremen 7-5 on Wednesday. Viking senior DH Elon Chamberlain drove in three to lead the Viking attack. Viking senior LHP Matt Groboski (1-0) fired two scoreless innings in relief to nail down the victory on the mound. Bremen falls to 6-4.

St. Rita (4-2) won again behind Mustang sophomore RHP Jake Shepski (2-0) as the Mustangs smashed Reavis 9-1. Shepski fired six solid innings on the mound to pick up the win and also drove home a pair with his bat. University of Louisville-bound C Zack Soria drove home four Mustang runs, including a bases-clearing double.

Herscher (6-3) struck for two runs in the bottom of the seventh to beat Parkland College-bound Pontiac LHP Caleb Leach (3-1) 4-3 on Wednesday. NIU-bound Justin Ruckman had a big RBI triple for Herscher. Leach hit a three-run bomb for Pontiac (4-4) and stuck out 11 in his complete-game loss.

Lisle (8-3) won again, this time defeating Hinckley-Big Rock 10-0 in five innings behind Lion senior Ty Howell. Howell, who hit three bombs in Tuesday’s sweep of Proviso East, fired a one-hitter at the Royals with seven strikeouts.

Westminster Christian (2-1) won at Carterville 4-1 behind ambidextrous senior Ryan Perez. Perez (2-1) fired five shutout innings of relief for the Warriors. Perez used his bat doubling home a pair of Warrior runs. Warrior freshman Chase Woods singled home another Warrior run.

St. Joseph-Ogden (9-2) knocked Champaign Centennial (6-1) from the ranks of the unbeaten on Wednesday. Spartan Steve Dunn fired a three-hitter at the Chargers and Connor Hunt had a perfect 4-for-4 afternoon the Spartans won in Champaign.

Galesburg (7-2) blasted East Peoria 11-2 behind ISU-bound C Chad Nelson. Nelson went deep twice and drove home six Silver Streak runs in the nonconference win on Wednesday.

Wheaton Academy (4-3) fell to Maple Grove, Minnesota 5-1. Warrior senior Corey Herbert plated the only Warrior run when his sac-fly brought home Wright State-bound Trevor Swaney, who had singled. The Warriors bounced back in their second game of the day, beating Eastview, Minnesota 2-1. Warrior senior Will Quaggle sent the small contingent of Wheaton Academy parents and fans back to their hotel happy, when he ripped a walk-off double to give the Warriors a split for the day in The Sunshine State.

Waubonsie Valley (2-1) defeated Naperville Central 4-2 in a nonconference game on Wednesday. Warrior LHP Tommy Fumagalli scattered eight hits over 6 1/3 innings to pick up the win on the mound for the Warriors. Senior RHP Ryan Vasick picked up the save by retiring the last two Redhawk hitters in the seventh.

Walther Lutheran evened up its record at 3-3 with a 5-1 win over University High on Wednesday. Bronco junior Luke Barajas fired a six-hitter with nine strikeouts. Senior Josh Galvin led the Bronco attack with a double, triple and two RBI for WL.

Notre Dame (5-2) defeated Guerin Prep 12-2 on Wednesday under the lights in Niles. Junior 1B Erick Zepeda led the Don attack with three hits, including a double and plated three Don runs. Don senior Charlie Jerger evened up his record at 1-1 by allowing one earned run in his five-inning stint. Jerger struck out six.

Benet Academy defeated York 11-9 in a sloppy nonconference game Wednesday in Lisle. Senior Eric Stout’s grand slam spurred Benet’s big six-run fifth inning. The Redwings piled on five more in the sixth to pull away.

 Senior Andrew Mogni was 2-for-2 with a double and two RBI and reached base all four times for Benet, and senior Sam Santa Maria was 2-for-4 with a homer and two RBI.

 Junior outfielder Josh Paparone impressed for York. Paparone showed to be extremely athletic on the bases and in the field; he also went 2-for-2 with two walks. Junior shortstop River Pitlock contributed two doubles and Peter Doughty had a two-run double for the Dukes.

Conant defeated Maine West in the first game of a two-game set 7-6. Conant fell behind 4-1 in the first, but battled back to take a 5-4 lead in the third, and ultimately take home the victory. Junior pitcher Kevin Schimel picked up the win for the Cougars on the mound and contributed offensively with a couple hits and RBI. The middle of the Conant line up of Zack Losch and Kerry Hickerson added a couple hits on the day as well.  Athletic Conant freshman prospect Anthony Forte, who homered in his first varsity at bat last week, looks to be an interesting player to watch as the season progresses.

For the Maine West Warriors, Scott Costello showed well behind the plate, throwing a pair of Conant runners out, and also swung it well with a couple hits and RBI.
