So much for the BBCOR bats decreasing the home-run production in Illinois High School baseball. Virden (North Mac’s) senior catcher and captain Erik Dodd hammered four bombs and drove home 13 runs as the Panthers crushed helpless Greenfield 33-2 on Thursday. Virden (North Mac) improved to 6-1 and Greenfield falls to 0-6. 

And on the other side of the coin at Waubonsee Community College in Sugar Grove:

Aurora Christian (6-1) blanked East Aurora 10-0 in six innings behind a no-hitter from NIU-bound Bobby Kuntzendorf (3-0). Kuntzendorf struck out 16 Tomcats in his hitless masterpiece.

Eagle senior Josh Haugen continued at his torrid start to 2012 with a pair of hits and two RBI. Eagle sophomore LF Brandon Walgren clubbed a pair of doubles and senior Michael Free chipped in with a perfect 3-for-3 day with an RBI and scored three runs.

Huntley (4-2) defeated Palatine 10-0 in a game that went the distance. Huntley senior RHP Bryan Doherty fired a no-hitter with 11 strikeouts. Red Raider junior C Tyler Mindack and senior 2B Brody Burkart each drove home a pair of Red Raider runs.

Belvidere (2-4) beat Rochelle 2-0 behind Buc junior RHP Troy Vandenbroek.

Vandenbroek fired a two-hitter at the Hubs and struck out 16. Vandenbroek helped himself with a 2-for-3 day at the plate with a double.

Big Northern West

Rockford Lutheran (3-3; 1-0) opened up BNC-West play with an 8-4 win over Mendota. Crusader Tyler Woodbrght went deep with two on for the Crusaders, making a winner of Crusader Jason Kerestes on the mound.

Catholic League Crossovers

De La Salle (7-2; 2-0 CCL White) blanked Leo 10-0 in five innings.

Gordon Tech (8-1; 2-0 CCL White) crushed St. Francis de Sales 11-1 in five-innings.

South Suburban Crossover

Reavis (3-5; 1-0 Red) won its SSC-opener with an 8-5 win over Tinley Park.

Ram senior 1B David Beltran and senior 3B Jake Stano each plated three Ram runs, leading the Rams past the Titans.

South Seven

Mt. Vernon (9-2; 1-0) opened up South Seven Conference play with an impressive 4-2 road win at Belleville Althoff. Ram 6-foot-4 senior Jared Anthis improved to 3-0 with a seven-hitter. Anthis allowed two earned runs and fanned seven Crusader hitters.

Ram senior Zane Xanders led the Ram attack with a pair of hits and two RBI. Junior Landon Thomas had two hits and an RBI and junior Trevor Fiota had a perfect 2-for-2 day with an RBI. Senior Josh Gateley chipped in with three hits as the Rams totaled 15 in their huge S7C win.

Southwestern

Alton (7-0; 2-0) nipped Granite City 2-1. Redbird junior Charlie Howard fired 1 1/3 innings of scoreless relief to improve to 3-0 on the mound for Alton. Redbird senior 1B Shane Matthews drove home a Redbird run with a big double. Granite City falls to 3-4 and 0-2 in the SWC.

O’Fallon (6-3; 2-0) surprised No. 25 Belleville East 6-3 on Thursday. Panther junior Ethan Wild improved to 3-0 with a solid 5 1/3 inning performance. Senior RHP Sam Hopkins nailed down his second save of the year to go with two wins. Hopkins lowered his ERA to 0.58. Junior Jake Jarvis had two hits and two RBI and sophomore Colin Holton singled home a pair of runs for the Tigers.

No. 25 Belleville East (6-1; 1-1) suffers its first defeat of 2012.

No. 15 Edwardsville (5-1; 1-1) bounced back from Tuesday’s loss to Alton with a 3-2 victory over Belleville West (3-1; 1-1) Tiger junior Zack Sparks (3-0) fired a five-hitter at the Maroons. Junior Jordan Heckler doubled home a Tiger run and senior Jason Boyd had a pair of hits including a double.

Collinsville (5-3; 1-1) bombed East St. Louis 15-0 in five innings.

Nonconference

No. 1 Lyons Township (3-1-1) was ambushed in Naperville by Naperville Central 2-0 on Thursday. Redhawk senior Ian Lewandowski (1-0) fired a five-hit shutout at the defending Class 4A champs. Lewandowski struck out eight.

Naperville Central (2-2) scored on a wild pitch in the first inning and then tacked on another run in the second on an RBI single from Redhawk Jeff Shank.

The Redhawks hung the loss on Illinois State-bound RHP Steve Heilenbach (0-1), who is currently ranked No. 9 in the Class of 2012. Heilenbach allowed the two runs and four hits in a six-inning complete-game performance for the future Redbird.

No. 2 St. Laurence (7-0) beat No. 20 Oak Lawn in Burbank 4-2 behind junior RHP Zach Lewis, who went the distance for the Vikings, and UAB-bound Nick Altobella, who had two hits and plated a Viking run. Oak Lawn falls to 3-4.

No.3 Normal West (7-1) beat Springfield Sacred Heart-Griffin 11-5 behind junior RHP Matthew James (4-0). James allowed one run in his four-inning stint on Thursday. James’ battery-mate junior C Adam McGinnis launched a two-run bomb to give the Wildcats a 5-0 lead they would never relinquish.

No. 4 Joliet Catholic (3-0) tuned up for tonight’s WJOL Area Invite quarterfinal showdown at Lockport (4-1) tonight at 6:30, with a 7-0 romp over Wheaton Warrenville South. Hilltopper senior RHP John Chignoli (1-0) fired a one-hitter at the Tigers.

The PBR’s Drake Skleba will be at historic Ed Flink Field in Lockport for all of the action of this great rivalry game between the Hilltoppers and the Porters.

No. 5 Mt. Carmel (9-0) hammered Freeport 13-3 in five innings behind another fine pitching performance from Caravan senior RHP Tyler Laurisch (3-0)

Laurish’s battery-mate junior C Tom Hayes went deep with a pair of Caravan on base and singled home another Caravan run. Senior Brent Novosel also homered with a man on and senior 3B Josh Gaal doubled home a pair of Caravan runs as MC rolled past its NIC-10 guests. 

No. 19 Marist (5-2) bounced back from its consecutive losses to No. 6 Providence and No. 8 Simeon, and blasted Richards 11-0 in five innings on Thursday. 6-foot-4 Redhawk Ryan Meyer fired a one-hitter at the Bulldogs and helped himself with a three-RBI afternoon.

No. 22 Lincoln-Way North (5-1) slipped past Bolingbrook 3-2 on Thursday. Phoenix junior C Ryan Pellack continued his streak of late-inning heroics as he doubled home the eventual game-winner for the Phoenix.

Benton (8-1) blanked Vernon Hills 6-0 behind a five-hit shutout from Ranger senior Trey Garrett (2-0). Garrett fanned seven in his masterpiece on Thursday.

Garrett helped himself at the plate with a hit and an RBI. Ranger senior Scott Johnson drove home a run for Benton. Vernon Hills falls to 6-3. 

Stevenson (3-1) defeated Crystal Lake South 2-1 in nine exciting innings on Thursday. Stevenson’s Greenspon did it all for the Patriots. Greenspon fired three scoreless innings in relief and then made himself the winner when he singled home the game-winner in the bottom of the ninth.

Andrew senior Justin Rzeszutko is human after all. After hitting five bombs in his previous two games, the T-Bolt senior settled for a game-winning double as

Andrew (5-1) slipped past Homewood-Flossmoor 4-3 0n Thursday. H-F falls to 2-1

Crystal Lake South (4-4) scored in the third inning on a booming double from senior C Tyler Salm, driving home Gator junior 3B Tommy Gaede who had tripled.

Lockport (4-1) defeated No. 24 Mundelein 4-1 in the Porter’s Miner Classic finale in Marion. Lockport senior Doug Matthews hand-cuffed the hard-hitting Mustangs, allowing one run and four hits in his five innings of work.

Porter senior Matt DeGraw fired two scoreless innings to nail down the save for Matthews. Porter junior Dan Sullivan had two hits and drove in a run and junior Ron Sessler drove home a pair of runs for LP. No. 24 Mundelein falls to 9-2.

Upstart Stagg (3-7) surprised Lincoln-Way East (3-3) on Thursday behind senior Joe Prete (1-1). Prete fired a four-hit shutout at the Griffins with six strikeouts as the Chargers won 1-0. Charger junior Mike Rankin had a pair of hits for Stagg. The Chargers have had seven one-run decisions in their first ten games.

Walther Lutheran (4-3) rolled to its fourth consecutive victory as the Broncos

crushed Christian Liberty Academy 12-2 in five innings. Walther Lutheran exploded for 11 runs in the top of the fifth to erase a 2-1 Christian Liberty Academy lead.

Bronco senior Josh Galvin did it all for WL. At the plate Galvin fell a triple short of hitting for the cycle and drove home four Bronco runs. On the mound the hard-throwing senior fired a complete game and stuck out 10 CLA hitters. Bronco juniors, Joe Lominicki and Luke Barajaz, each had three-hit days to lead the Broncos.

Lincoln-Way Central (7-2) won another game in the Knight’s last at bat, as senior Greg Wymar drove home sophomore Kevin Mampe, as the Knights beat Bradley-Bourbonnais 3-2 on Thursday. Knight senior Nick Amaya had a perfect 2-for-2 day and drove home the other two Knight runs.  

Barrington (6-3) knocked off Glenbrook South 9-2 behind a six-hitter from Bronco senior Jon Rogers. Bronco junior C Ryan Lidge had a single, two doubles and drove in four Bronco runs. Senior Frank Waliczek tripled with sacks full of Broncos to put the game away. Glenbrook South falls to 4-3.

St. Rita (5-2) stopped Bloomington 5-1 in Chicago on Thursday. Purdue-bound Mustang 3B Stefano Belmonte had the key hit for Rita when he smacked a clutch two-run double in the Mustang’s three-run third, to lead the Mustangs past the Purple Raiders. 

St. Rita’s Mike Henry (1-0) allowed one run in six innings to pick up the win on the mound. Henry allowed just four hits.

Bloomington (6-2) junior RHP Jayden Thompson (1-1) suffered his first career loss on the mound for the Purple Raiders. Purple Raider junior Brandon Edwards led Bloomington at the plate with a 2-for-3 afternoon. Edwards is currently hitting .611

Notre Dame (6-2) spotted Evanston a 5-0 lead and then rallied back to stun the Wildkits 6-5 on Thursday. Don senior Nick Pierruccini lead the Don attack with two hits and an RBI. Senior 1B Sean Pavel was 1-for-3 with an RBI. Don junior Zach Koziol (1-0) picked up the ND win on the mound in relief.

Lincoln-Way West (7-1) nipped Joliet Central 2-1 as Warrior Tyler Kopp drove in the game-winner in the fourth inning, making a winner of Warrior Frank Mulder

Normal Community (2-5) slipped past Lake Forest 4-3 on Thursday night. Ironman senior Payton Miller’s clutch two-out walk-off single, in the bottom of the seventh, won it for the Ironmen. Heartland Community College-bound CF Eric Fight doubled home a pair of NCHS runs and Ironman senior Jake Juodolkis picked up the win on the mound in his first start of the season.

Sandburg (2-0-1) a day after its 11-inning tie with No.1 Lyons Township on Wednesday, exploded for a 20-1 five-inning rout of Thornridge.

Burlington Central (5-3) defeated previously undefeated Hinsdale South 9-7 in Darien on Thursday. Rocket senior SS Zach Ranney had four hits and senior C

Tanner Scott went deep for the victorious Rockets. Rocket junior Ryan Schuring picked up the win on relief.

Romeoville (3-3) shutout previously undefeated Morgan Park 1-0 behind Spartan junior RHP Brian Hurley (1-1). Hurley fired a two-hitter at Morgan Park (7-1)

Niles West (6-1) slid past St. Patrick 5-4 behind University of Michigan-bound

Kevin Ross. Ross had a pair of hits and Wolves starting pitcher Nick Reyes improved to 2-0 on the campaign for Niles West.

Benet Academy (3-2) blanked Waubonsie Valley 8-0 behind a three-hitter from Redwing junior Jordan Rajewski. In the second game of the day Benet Academy (4-2) beat York 10-9 behind a four-RBI game from Redwing senior 2B Chris Stout.

Defending Class 1A champ Carrollton (5-2) scored 10 runs in the first inning and routed Greenfield 18-2 in five innings. Hawk senior Joey Coonrod went 4-for-4 with a pair of doubles and plated four Hawk runs. Hawk senior Tyler Watson had three hits and three RBI.
