CHICAGO, IL - On a sunny and calm afternoon at Haggerty Field, five seed and Regional host Mount Carmel toppled the Kenwood Broncos 16-4 after five innings of play. The Caravan used an eight-run third and a five-run fourth to put the nail in the coffin and secure a trip to the Regional Finals on Saturday.

Mount Carmel was in true playoff form after an up-and-down 2019 regular season. The top ranked junior in the state of Illinois, Ed Howard (Oklahoma commit), wasted little time leading off the Caravan’s half of the first with a missle homerun curling over the left field foul pole (below). Four batters later, Sebastian Estrada sent a HR of his own over the left/centerfield wall scoring himself and Anthony Livermore (Northwestern commit).

The eight-run outburst in the 3rd saw five hits and four walks as Mount Carmel sent twelve hitters to the dish. Livermore made most of the noise as he sent a bases clearing triple over the left fielders head. Josh Houston delivered a rope RBI single to left and Howard also doubled in the frame.

Ethan Imlach delivered a big hit in Caravan 4th as he drove a bases loaded single over the second basemans’ head. A defensive miscue aided the hit as Imlach ended up on second with all runners touching home. Four batters later, Livermore struck again sending a two-run double to left field capping off the five run frame.

The Broncos scored a run in consecutive innings as Cameron Hill was walked home after doubling to left to lead off the 2nd. In the 3rd, Donovan Simon drove a double of his own to left and came in to score on an RBI groundout from Zamaurion Hatcher. Hatcher was the sole offensive producer for the Broncos in the later part of the contest as the sophomore sent a two-run triple to right field in the 5th.

Mount Carmel starting pitcher Nick Miketinac side-stepped a self induced jam in the second inning. The uncommitted junior RHP walked three straight following a two-out double only to strikeout Kenwood’s leadoff hitter ending the threat. Miketinac finished off his complete game five inning performance on 98 pitches allowing four hits and four earned with four walks and seven punch outs.

Max Curry took the loss for the Broncos.

With the win, Mount Carmel advances to play Lyons Township on Saturday at 11am in the Regional Finals.
