Naperville Central Breezes By Waubonsie Valley

On Thursday afternoon, Naperville Central and Waubonsie Valley squared off to finish up their three-game set. Waubonsie handed Naperville Central their first loss of the season the game prior, so the RedHawks were looking to bounce back and did so in a big way. A strong nine-run first inning led Naperville Central to a 12-1 victory and series win.

Naperville Central (5-1) took no time to jump on the board.  A hard hit double to the right field gap off the bat of sophomore Colin Barczi set the tone, plating sophomore Charalambos Nicoloudes, who reached via a hit by pitch earlier in the inning to make the score 1-0.

After a passed ball advanced pinch runner Jackson James to third base, a fielder’s choice to the shortstop would then make the score 2-0. After a single by senior Carson Lee, senior Jack Busch followed with a double making the score 3-0. Senior Andrew Porter would then single to center field to plate another run and make the score 4-0. Senior JT Albrecht drew a walk to load the bases which set the stage for Charalambos Nicoloudes’ second at-bat of the inning. Nicoloudes delivered a no-doubt, grand-slam over the left field wall to make the score 8-0. The final tally of the inning came from senior Will Endrud, who ripped a double down the right field line to make the score 9-0.

The RedHawks would continue to add to their lead in the bottom of the second inning as Busch started the inning with a single to right field. JT Albrecht would go on to double to centerfield and score Busch to make the score 10-0.

In the fourth inning, Porter smoked a double to left field to put himself in scoring position to open the frame. JT Albrecht followed with a single to right field scoring Porter and made the score 11-1. Sophomore Clay Schrader would eventually score the final run of the game for the RedHawks on a passed ball to give the RedHawks a 12-1 lead.

Waubonsie Valley (4-3) would score their first and only run of the game in the top of the third inning on a single to centerfield off the bat of junior Tyler Patton, which scored Zack Stokes to make the score 10-1 at the time.

Junior Charlie Diiulio got the start on the mound for the RedHawks and went all five innings. The RedHawks hurler only allowed 2 hits while striking out 6 in the contest. Diiulio featured a fastball that sat 81-84 mph with arm-side movement. His changeup looked to be his best secondary offering this game sitting 76-77 mph with sink and feel for the bottom of the zone. He also used a curveball that hovered around 71 mph to keep the Waubonsie hitters off balance.

Notable Performances:

Charalambos Nicoloudes: (1-2, grandslam, 4 RBIs)
JT Albrecht: (2-2, double, 2 RBIs)
Jack Busch: (2-3, double, 1 RBI)
Andrew Porter: (2-3, double, 1 RBI)
