ELMHURST, IL - Traditional power Oak Park-River Forest is off to an uncharacteristically slow start to the season. But the Huskies got a much-needed boost when they rallied late to upend No. 24 York, 7-5, on the road in a West Suburban Silver matchup Monday afternoon.
Trailing 4-0 after three innings, Oak Park (6-6-1, 2-3-1) began to chip away - thanks to some sloppy York (16-3, 8-2) defense - and ultimately took a 5-4 advantage in a four-run fifth inning. Two errors, a bloop infield hit, a bunt single and two hit-by-pitches all contributed to the big inning.
Oak Park added two more insurance runs in the sixth inning behind an RBI double by senior Evan Nieslawski and a run-scoring single by senior David Trisko. Nieslawski also added a bloop infield hit during the Huskies’ big fifth inning and finished with two runs and two RBI. Junior SS Brian May finished with two hits and two runs, and Trisko added a pair of RBI. Sophomore C Luke Fitzgerald contributed a run-scoring double to left field, while playing stellar defense behind the plate, which included back-picking a runner in the fifth inning.
York, which recently jumped into the updated Illinois Power 25 Team Rankings after a torrid start of the season, came out the gates hot, scoring two runs in both the second and third innings to mount a 4-0 advantage.
Junior DH Joey Yaeger led the Dukes, going 3-for-4 with an RBI, while sophomore SS Ryan Ross went 2-for-3 with a RBI. Senior LF Austin Geisomino went 2-for-2 with a RBI double and two runs scored, and senior C Mike Bernal added two hits and a run.
