Porsche Exchange Player of the Week: 3B/RHP Jake Garella

Edwardsville senior 3B/RHP Jake Garella has been named this week’s Porsche Exchange Player of the Week thanks to his outstanding performance at the plate and on the mound last week for the Tigers.

Garella, who is uncommitted and currently ranked No. 147 in the Illinois 2016 class, capped off a memorable season going 7-for-8 with three doubles and a walk-off single during postseason play. He also, threw 6 1/3 innings of relief, allowing one unearned run and striking out seven.

Garella, ended his season with a .570 batting average, a new school record, breaking the old one of .525, set in 2005. He also finished with 16 doubles, one triple, four homeruns and 36 RBI’s.

Last Wednesday, in a 7-6 regional semifinal win over Collinsville, Garella went 4-for-5 with two doubles, three RBI and a walk-off single. Garella was also vital on the mound going 6.1 innings in relief, scattering four hits, one run, none earned, struck out seven and walked two.

On Saturday, in a loss to Belleville West in the Region championship, Garella went 3-for-3, with a double, run batted in and run scored for the Tigers.

“Jake was our steady presence all year long,” said Edwardsville coach Tim Funkhouser. “He took great at-bats, made pitches on the mound and what he adds to a team on and off the field is immeasurable.”

For his efforts, Garella has been named the Porsche Exchange Player of the Week for the week of May 21 – May 28.
