Porsche Exchange Player of the Week: Dan Durkin

Dan Durkin, 3B, Andrew HS, Class of 2013

For much of last week, Dan Durkin couldn’t make an out if he tried. The 5-foot-11, 180-pound junior third baseman feasted on top-flight pitching as he led the No. 8 T-Bolts to a perfect 6-0 record. At one point, Durkin delivered 10 straight hits, including two home runs, and reached base 12 consecutive times.

What’s even more impressive is who Durkin did it against. On Tuesday, Durkin went 5-for-5 against No. 20 Oak Forest and its ace pitcher, Kyle Funkhouser, who’s ranked No. 3 in the Class of 2012. Durkin achieved three of his hits against Funkhouser, including a home run in the first inning, as the T-Bolts cruised to a 20-5 victory. Durkin also hit around Homewood-Flossmoor ace left-hander Daniel Lietz during a 4-3 victory.

For the week, Durkin went 14-for-22, with two homers, two doubles, 10 RBI and 10 runs scored while playing a superlative third base.

“I’ve been around baseball my whole life,” said Andrew coach Dave DeHaan, “and that was the best week of baseball I’ve ever seen from an individual player. From his defense, to his timely hitting, he did everything. And he did it against top-notch competition.”

Previously unranked, Andrew (7-1 through Monday) shot up the state poll to No. 8 after it reeled off victories against: Willowbrook (6-0), No. 20 Oak Forest (20-5), T.F. South (16-11), Homewood-Flossmoor (4-3), Sandburg (3-2) and No. 9 Marian Catholic (9-1).

The left-handed hitting Durkin is batting .556 for the season. As a sophomore, he led the T-Bolts in RBI with 34 while batting .370.

“He’s the real deal,” DeHaan said. “I really think he’s one of the top junior prospects in the state.”
