St. Rita senior middle 2B/RHP Tyler Halas has been a huge cog in the Mustang machine off to a perfect 12-0 start and a No. 2 overall ranking in the PBR Power 25. The 6-foot, 190-pound Tennessee commit has been a force on the mound and at the plate.
In five games last week, Halas went 10-for-14 at the plate with two doubles, two triples, and two homeruns, nine runs scored, and 12 RBI. He also was the winning pitcher in the opening game of the Steven Bajenski Memorial Tournament over Oak Park, firing six innings of three run baseball with three strikeouts and no walks. St. Rita coach Mike Zunica noted on Halas’ performance, “Today really helped push us in the right direction. Tyler Halas gave us a gutty performance today. Tyler didn’t have his best stuff, but battled and gave the performance a St. Rita senior should provide.”
On the year Halas is hitting .563 (18-32) with six doubles, two triples, three home runs, 14 runs scored, with 18 RBI. On the mound he’s a perfect 3-0, posting a 2.00 ERA in 14 innings pitched with 15 hits allowed and five strikeouts to four walks.
Halas (ranked No. 23 in Illinois’ player rankings, No. 251 overall) remarked on the Mustangs’ early hot-start, “We’re really happy about the 12-0 start but we have to keep it in perspective and focus on our next practice and next game.”
A three-year varsity starter for the Mustangs, Halas has long been one of the top prospects in the state of Illinois, committing to Tennessee in the fall of his sophomore year. He impressed this winter at the Super 60 Pro Showcase with his all-round athletic ability; he’s a 6.90 runner in the 60, throws free-and-easy across the infield at 82 mph, and produces exit velocity up to 93 mph. On the mound, Halas has shown a feel for three pitches with mid 80’s fastball velocity and a power changeup in the low 80’s.
For his efforts, Halas has been named the first Porsche Exchange Player of the Week for the spring 2015 season.
The Porsche Exchange salutes Halas’ hard work and success.
