Preseason All-State: Pitching Analysis

By Steve Nielsen
Scouting Director – Wisconsin/Illinois

We saved the best group for last as the pitchers were all strong across the board. 45 of the 47 pitchers touched the 80 mph mark or better, and with such a deep collection of arms we expanded our top pitchers list to 20.

2016 prospect Cal Coughlin was the most impressive in attendance. Coughlin touched 92 mph twice with very little effort. More than just a his big fastball, he was able to control all of his pitches with well above average action. Liam Jenkins came in second. At 6-foot-8, 225-pounds he has the most impressive frame of the group. Jenkins control his body well and showed the ability to repeat, touching 89 mph.

Here’s a look at the top pitching prospects.

Changeup has fading action, advanced feel, thrown with arm speed, 74-76 mph, showed control of the zone. Slider flashed downward action, 82-84 mph, thown aggressively with tight spin. Advanced actions, strong third base type, stay in front of the baseball, excellent body control, can play on the move. Ran a 7.10 in the 60. Coughlin is one of the premier two-way prospects in the Class of 2016.
