Preseason I.D. - McHenry: Quick Hits

The second annual Prep Baseball Report Preseason I.D. - McHenry at Pro Player Academy in McHenry, IL was held on Sunday, January 29, 2017. The event, which sold out, had over 100 2017-2020 high school graduates in attendance. Here’s a look at a few standouts from the event.

The most impressive position and deepest at the event may have been the catchers.

  • Brandon Bannon (Richmond Burton, 2018) stood out with one of the best catch and throw tools at the event. Bannon showed off a strong arm that carried well at 76 mph, posting a sub 2.0 pop time.
  • Alex Powers (Prairie RIdge, 2019) is a 6-foot-1, 165-pound, athletically-built catcher. Loose hands at the plate with bat speed. Strong arm behind the plate, clocked at 77 mph and pop times ranged between 2.06-2.11.
  • Julio Cajigas (Romeoville, 2019) is a switch hitting catcher/outfielder with impressive tools. Clocked at 80 mph from the crouch and 89 mph from the outfield. Pop times ranged between 1.94-2.08. At the plate, he takes an aggressive cut from both sides of the plate looking to do damage. Also, ran a 4.30 down-the-line.
  • Jake Masini (Prairie Ridge, 2020) was the youngest of an impressive catching crop who showed a big arm for his age at 73 mph out of the crouch. An athletic backstop, Masini showed good footwork and an active blocker who is quick to his feet. At the plate, loose swing, bat speed and a spray approach.
  • The biggest freshman (2020) arm of the day goes to RHP/INF Tanner Dreher (Covington, IN). The 5-foot-10, 175-pound two-way player topped out at 84 mph on the mound and 86 mph across the diamond. Dreher’s repertoire on the mound also featured and above average curveball and changeup for his age.
  • INF/RHP Austin Greco (Mundelein, 2020) took one of the top offensive rounds of the day by a freshman. Right-handed hitter, keeps it extremely simple, creates advanced bat speed and makes a lot of hard contact. High follow 2020 bat. On the mound, worked 79-82 with a three-pitch mix.
  • Another two-way standout in the 2020 class was RHP/INF Logan Tabeling (Tuscola). Tabeling was up to 82 mph on the mound and swung a quick left-handed bat along with a defensive skill set that should play well at third base.
  • Chase Maifield (Grant, 2018) is a 6-foot-5, 250-pound imposing 1B/LHP. At the plate he swings a left-handed bat with present strength and power potential. Registered an 89 mph exit velocity. At first base he has good feet for his size and athletic actions.
  • 6-foot-5, 180-pound long and lean RHP Andrew Schimmoler (Oswego, 2018) ran his fastball up to 85 mph and flashed feel for a curveball at 65-69 mph.
  • 6-foot-3, 180-pound Kyle Morgan (Huntley, 2018) is a projectable southpaw with feel for a three pitch mix. Fastball sat 79-82 mph.
  • Ryan Ignoffo (Cary-Grove, 2018) is a right-handed pitcher with a durable lower half. Strong, raw arm strength, fastball sat 83-86 and flashed a four-pitch mix.
  • Madison College commit Brandon Komar (Elkhorn (WI), 2017) worked 85-87 mph with his fastball and showed feel for his curveball and changeup. Defensively in the infield, he showed fluid actions with soft hands and threw 86 mph across the diamond.
  • Infielder Danny Sperling (Wauconda, 2018) has an athletic 6-foot-2, 175-pound build and ran a 4.36 home-to-first. Simple, loose left-handed swing with bat speed, sprayed balls to all fields and routinely found the barrel.
  • 6-foot-1, 200-pound 2018 RHP/1B Dylan Honkala (McHenry) had an impressive all-around day. Fastball, run and sink action at 82-83 mph. At the plate, right-handed hitter with some easy juice and exit velocity clocked at 94 mph. Also, had good feel and footwork around the bag at first base.
  • 2020 RHP Evan Tocmo (Huntley) showed a three pitch feel on the mound working 74-77 mph with his fastball. His curveball is advanced for his age with 12-6 shape and late breaking action with depth at 63-65 mph.
  • Another 2020 arm to keep an eye on is Cole Bhardwaj (Jacobs). Bhardwaj has an athletic 6-foot, 165-pound frame, long, quick arm and fastball up to 79 mph.
