Recruiting news from around Illinois

By Sean Duncan

A recap of the recent commitments around Illinois:

Dan Durkin, a left-handed hitting third baseman from Andrew HS, committed to Michigan State University over the weekend. A two-year varsity standout, the 5-foot-10, 190-pound Durkin led the talent-rich south suburbs of Chicago in hitting with a robust .523 batting average as a junior, which earned him first-team Prep Baseball Report All-State honors. He finished with 43 runs scored, 3 home runs and drove in 31 runs.  He set the tone in early April when he was named Porsche Exchange Player of the Week honors after he delivered 10 consecutive hits, including two home runs, and reached base 12 straight times. He finished his whirlwind week 14-for-22 with two homers, two doubles and 10 RBI, and did so against top-level pitchers.

Matt Ryan, an OF/INF/RHP from Carmel HS, has committed to St. Louis University. The right-hander served as the Corsairs’ workhorse on the mound, and can play several positions well.

In older news, Ronell Coleman, a 2B from Simeon HS, committed to Vanderbilt University a few weeks ago. The 5-foot-3, 125-pound switch-hitter is a top-level defensive infielder who enjoyed a meteoric rise over the summer, particularly at USA Baseball’s Tournament of Stars.

Terrell Steward, an OF from Harlan HS, has committed to Chicago State.

Rend Lake College landed a pair when it received commitments from LHP Dylan Dunn (Mt. Zion HS) and LHP/OF Eil Miller (Shelbyville HS).

T.J. Schrader, a hard-throwing right-hander from Illinois Central College, has verbally committed to Northern Illinois University. Coming out of Deer Creek-Mackinaw HS, Schrader was ranked No. 60 in the Class of 2012, and had originally signed with Western Illinois.

Quincy University landed a pair of prospects with commitments from OF David Jacob (Sacred Heart Griffin HS) and Dominic Miles (Quincy Notre Dame HS).
