Stock Report: 2015 SS/RHP Esteban Martinez

Steve Nielsen
Scouting Director - Illinois

Today’s player spotlight is on Class of 2015 product Esteban Martinez, hailing from St. Rita HS. Martinez recently put his impressive skill set on display at the Underclassmen Prospect Showcase in October. Martinez showcased himself as a legitimate two-way threat as a switch hitting shortstop and right handed pitcher.

Martinez carries himself well on a baseball field; he shows solid infield actions with soft, quick hands and a clean exchange. At 6-foot, 165-pounds, his arm plays well across the diamond at 81 mph. Martinez shows quick-twitch actions with his footwork in the field, also running a 7.06 60.

Offensively, he shows the ability to hit from both sides of the plate. Martinez uses an aggressive path to the baseball showing flashes of pop from both sides. Hitting with an open stance from both sides of the plate, he finds the barrel with regularity.

On the mound, Martinez displays quick arm action producing an 82-83 mph fastball from a high ¾ arm slot. His changeup shows arm side run while thrown with fastball arm speed, also showing the ability to command the zone with it.

Martinez has the potential to develop into a legitimate two-way player at the next level and will undoubtedly bring an impact to the Mustangs for years to come. His stock is certainly a buy, as this sophomore will continue to improve his game.
