CARY, IL – No. 15 Crystal Lake South scored six runs in first inning and eight more in the seventh and ultimately defeated No. 18 Cary-Grove 15-6 on Thursday afternoon.

Crystal Lake South (27-5) jumped on Cary-Grove early with six runs in a wild top of the first inning. Out of the 11 Gators that came to the plate in the frame, there were three singles, one walk and a variety of defensive miscues. Leadoff man, Griffin Bright, reached base twice in the frame, scored a run and had an RBI single to right-center field.

Cary-Grove (23-8), regrouped and clawed their way back in the game. The Trojans scored one in the first, one in the second and four in the third to tie the game at six. In the four-run fourth, Ryan Ignoffo and Justin Trausch singled and scored. Tommy Neilson, a Benedictine commit, had an RBI double and Quinn Priester, a Texas Christian commit, hit a two-run homerun to right-center field. The homerun tied the game for the time being and was the last run the Trojans would score.

After the Priester homerun, Crystal Lake South turned to junior left-handed pitcher Mark Paul. Paul proceeded to throw 3.2 innings and stifle the Trojan offense who had all the momentum at the time he entered the game. Paul only allowed one hit in his three-plus innings of shutout work.

Crystal Lake South put the game away for good with eight runs in the top of the seventh. Leading 7-6 entering the frame, the Gators sent 13 batters to the plate. At one point in the frame, five consecutive Gators reached base via a single or a double, before Wabash Valley JC commit, Brian Fuentes, drove a two-run homerun to right-center field.

The two teams will play the rubber match of their three-game set tomorrow at Crystal Lake South.
