By Steve Nielsen
Scouting Director - Illinois

On Sunday, January 27th the Underclass Invitational unveiled some of the top freshman and sophomores in the state of Illinois. We got the opportunity to see a number of young faces for the first time and we were not disappointed.

There were some exciting prospects in attendance who posted exciting numbers throughout the day. The top arms in the bullpen were highlighted by Jeremy Orbik (RHP, Homewood Flossmoor, 2015) and Mike Kogut (RHP, Nazareth, 2015) who both touched 87 mph. Also in the mix were Dominic Pilas (RHP, Mt. Carmel, 2015), Mack Rosman (RHP, Fremd, 2015), Jake Hurst (LHP, Peoria Notre Dame, 2015) and Will Corn (RHP, Hiawatha, 2015) all of which topped out at 86 mph.

Along with arm speed the event also showcased foot speed, led by Peoria Notre Dame catcher Andrew Shadid posting a 6.82 60. A number of other notables cracked the 7.00 mark including Eric Giltz (OF, Wheaton Warrenville South, 2015), Tyler Fitzgerald (SS, Rochester, 2016) and Dave Watson (OF, Normal West, 2016) who all ran 6.89’s in the 60.

We will continue to highlight all the top performers this week as we will break down each class and position with scouting reports and stats. Keep checking back each day for more updates on some of the best underclassmen in the state.
