Underclass Showcase: Pitching Analysis


PBR Scouting Staff

As we conclude our positional analysis of the Underclass Showcase we take a look at the top pitching prospects. Right-handed Cooper Herold (Minooka, 2020) tops the list showing easy arm speed and topping out at 85 mph. The list also includes several high upside arms to follow in both the 2020 and 2021 classes.

Top Pitching Prospects

1. Cooper Herold, RHP, Minooka, 2020
5-foot-11, 160-pound right-handed pitcher, athletic build. Delivery repeats, athletic with regular effort, works slightly closed. Arm action is quick and loose, high ¾ slot, well above average arm speed. Fastball has slight running action, topped at 85 mph, sat 83-84 mph, firm finish through hitting zone. Curveball has 11/5 shape, short action, 67-69 mph. Changeup is thrown with deceptive arm speed, arm side action, 72-75 mph. High follow 2020 arm.  

2. Ben Vitas, INF/RHP, Providence Catholic, 2020
6-foot, 160-pound, athletically built, well-proportioned, two-way prospect. Right-handed hitter, athletic, slightly open setup, short on time stride. Separate hands from lower half and creates easy bat speed. Excellent hand eye, showed feel for the barrel, line drive middle of the field approach. Defensively moves easy and athletic, showed body control and range to both sides, soft hands and feet work together through the baseball. Arm action is easy, short high ¾ slot, carries well, 87 mph across the diamond. Ran a 7.31 60, laser-timed. On the mound, advanced pitchability, feel for three and works fast. Tall and fall delivery, works with rhythm and easy effort throughout. Arm works long, loose and quick out of a ¾ window. Fastball showed feel for the zone, arm-side-run, sat 80-82 mph, touched 83; looks to have plenty more in the tank. Curveball, thrown for strikes,11/5 shape, depth, tight spin, ranged between 62-67 mph. Changeup, maintains arm speed, gets late run at times, feel for the bottom of the zone, 72-73 mph. High-follow 2020 prospect.

3. Ernie Day, RHP/INF, Taft, 2020
5-foot-11, 178-pound, two-way prospect. On the mound, right-handed pitcher, tall and fall delivery, works online, lands square with some effort throughout. Short, quick arm action from an over-the-top slot; drops down on offspeed offerings. Fastball, late life and finish, 81-83 mph, touched 84. Curveball, sharp action, 10/4 shape, 64-67 mph. Changeup worked 68-71 mph. At the plate, right-handed hitter, balanced setup, early load, short stride and maintains balance through contact. Path stays level through the hitting zone, line-drive approach and worked the middle of the field. 86 mph exit velocity from a tee. Defensively, profiles as a corner infielder, reliable, sure hands at times, occasionally winds up on transfer, athletic arm action, throws carry across the diamond at 79 mph. 7.83 runner in the 60.

4. Will Tenuta, RHP, Sandburg, 2020
5-foot-11, 145-pound right-handed pitcher, thin lanky frame, projects. Uptempo deliver, short rocker into balance point, tall and fall with athletic finish. Easy arm, short draw, over the top slot, quick and loose. Fastball has slight running action, control of the zone, 79-81 mph. Curveball has depth and feel, 12/6 action, near fastball arm speed, dropped for strikes. Changeup is 74-76 mph, thrown with feel and arm action.

5. Kyle Walter, RHP, Minooka, 2021
6-foot-2, 185-pound right-handed pitcher, long lanky frame. Delivery works online, slight drop and drive, little effort. Long arm action, high ¾ slot, showed quickness. Fastball showed feel for the zone, 80-82 mph, touched 83 mph. Curveball has 11/5 shape, 64-67 mph. Changeup fades, 67-71 mph, slighlty lower slot.

6. Cole Anderson, LHP, St. Laurence, 2020
6-foot-1, 165-pound left-handed pitcher, lean athletic build. Projects well, smooth delivery, stretch only, stays closed working slightly across his body, regular effort. Arm action is long and loose, high ¾ slot. High pitchability stays around the zone. Fastball sat 78-79 mph, flashed fastball command. Curveball has 1/7 shape, 67-68 mph. Slider is 67-69 mph, similar to curveball. Feel for changeup, 71-73 mph.

7. Alex Rodriguez, RHP/OF, Bradley-Bourbonnais, 2020
6-foot-2, 175-pound right-handed hitting RHP/OF with a lanky, wide shouldered, projectable frame. On the mound works from a high ¾ arm angle with a short, quick arm action. Tall and fall delivery working in line with home plate. Short stride with a square landing. Repeats well. Fastball sat 78-79 mph. Showed feel for his off speed offerings. Curveball has 11-5 shape with sharp breaking action at 66-71 mph. Changeup has running action at 72-73 mph. Offers intriguing upside on the mound. At the plate hits from an open setup, leg lift stride with fair balance. Pull hitter with a long swing path. 81 mph exit velocity from a tee. Ran the 60 at 7.92. Defensively has a long arm action from a high ¾ slot. Slower actions, threw 80 mph from the outfield.

8. Davey Fitzpatrick, INF/RHP, Lincoln-Way East, 2020
6-foot-2, 165-pound, athletically built, projectable, two-way prospect. Projects well on the mound. Right-handed pitcher, long, loose arm from an over-the-top slot and looks to have a lot left in the tank. Smooth tall and fall delivery, high front side, works online, lands square with regular effort throughout. Fastball creates angle at times, sat 79-80 mph, touched 81. Curveball works 12/6, depth, feel, 64-69 mph. Changeup, worked 71-73 mph. At the plate, balanced, athletic setup, smooth load, short stride and fluid rhythm throughout. Loose, easy swing, creates whip at times, long, uphill bat path. 85 mph exit velocity from a tee. Defensively, fluid footwork, long, loose arm action, accurate throws, carries across the diamond at 79 mph. 7.57 runner in the 60.

9. Conor Wright, LHP, Joliet Catholic, 2020
6-foot-3, 180-pound left-handed pitcher, lanky projectable frame. Delivery works with tempo, balanced and gets over front side, regular effort, recoil finish. Long loose arm action, high ¾ slot, clean and projectable. Fastball runs to arm side, 76-78 mph, topped at 79 mph, crates fastball angle. Curveball has 1/7 shape, 61-65 mph. Straight changeup is 68-72 mph, some feel, occasionally underneath.

10. George Evangelopoulos, LHP/INF, Stagg, 2021
6-foot, 150-pound, athletically built, two-way prospect. On the mound, left-handed pitcher, drop and drive uptempo delivery and stays on-line. Long, loose, quick arm action from a high ¾ slot. Fastball sat 77-78 mph. Curveball, advanced pitch, 2/8 shape, sharp action, tight spin, feel, 68-71 mph. Changeup, arm-side-run, 70-73 mph. At the plate, left-handed hitter, crouched setup, short leg-kick trigger. Pull approach and 78 mph exit velocity from a tee. At first base, athletic fielding position, clean transfer, loose arm, throws clocked at 74 mph across the diamond. 7.40 runner in the 60, laser-timed.

Cord Babcock, LHP/OF, Grant, 2020
5-foot-11, 145-pound right-handed hitting LHP/OF. On the mound throws from a ¾ arm angle as well as working from a submarine angle. Tall and fall delivery working in line with home plate. Fastball sat 70-75 mph. Curveball sat 60-63. Slider has sweeping action at 64-67 mph with sweeping action. Works better from the conventional ¾ arm slot. Defensively has a long arm action from a ¾ slot. Plays thru the ball with a clean exchange and fluid footwork. Throws worked up uphill at 78 mph. Offensively hits from a tall, slightly open setup. 69 mph exit velocity from a tee. Ran the 60 at 7.58.

Alex Barrera, INF/RHP, Homewood-Flossmoor, 2021
5-foot-11, 170-pound, two-way prospect, strong, athletic build. Offensively, right-handed hitter, open setup, loads hands and stride gets back to even. Path works uphill at times, gets extension occasionally, gap-to-gap approach and 77 mph exit velocity from a tee. On the infield, reliable hands, throws from a high ¾ slot and clocked at 73 mph. Ran an 8.31 60. On the mound, right-handed pitcher, tall and fall delivery, tucked at balance point and lands closed. Arm works short and out of a high ¾ slot. Fastball sat 70-72 mph. Slider, 10/4 shape, 60-63 mph. Curveball works more 11/5, ranged between 58-62 mph.

Jake Buczkowski, RHP, Riverside-Brookfield, 2021
6-foot, 210-pound right-handed pitcher. Stretch only delivery, strides to closed side working across his body. Arm action plays out of an over the top slot. Fastball sinks, ranging 60-63 mph, touched 65 mph. Curveball ranged 54-58 mph, gradual 12/6 type.

Zachary Burhans, C/INF/RHP, DePaul College Prep, 2020
6-foot, 140-pound utility player, slender build. Right-handed hitter, balanced stance, loads hands down and back, leg lift stride. Path has length, uphill path. 70 mph exit velocity from the tee. Defensively arm played from a high ¾ slot, 70 mph across the infield, 64 mph out of the crouch. Pop times ranged 2.51-2.63. 8.59 runner in the 60. On the mound fastball topped at 70 mph, sat 66-69 mph. Curveball sat 56-61 mph, 11/5 type. Changeup is 59-64 mph.

Connor Cassady, C/RHP, Lyons, 2020
6-foot-1, 165-pound catcher, lean lanky frame with upside. Right-handed hitter, open stance, short stride to even, good balance. Showed occasional bat speed, uphill path, 80 mph exit velocity from the tee. Defensively arm action is short and over the top, 69 mph out of the crouch. Pop times posted at 2.25-2.44, showed quiet hands receiving. 8.07 runner in the 60. On the mound arm action plays with more length. Fastball showed control of the zone, 72-74 mph. Curveball has gradual action at 61-64 mph. Changeup is straight, near fastball arm speed, 64-67 mph.

Samuel Corbett, LHP/OF, Maine South, 2020
5-foot-10, 165-pound left-handed hitting LHP/OF. On the mound works from a high ¾ arm angle with a loose arm action. Tall and fall delivery with regular effort. Fastball sat 75-77 mph. Curveball has 1-7 shape with gradual action at 61-67 mph. Changeup has sinking action at 62-65 mph. Defensively has a long arm action from an over the top slot. Plays thru the ball with quick footwork. Threw 71 mph from the outfield. At the plate narrow setup, short knee to knee stride. Pull hitter with a level swing path. 82 mph exit velocity from a tee. Ran the 60 at 7.94.

Jordan Donato, C/RHP, Triad, 2021
5-foot-10, 150-pound two-way player, lean build. Left-handed hitter, open setup, toe tap stride, good balance. Bat path works, level through contact with extension, in rhythm. 80 mph exit velocity from the tee. Defensively arm action is short and over the top, loose clean release. 68 mph out of the crouch. 2.30-2.41 pop times. 7.78 runner in the 60. On the mound arm plays similar, little effort. Fastball played 74-76 mph. Throws curveball and slider, similar shape and velocity, 10/4 plane, 58-64 mph.

Bode Gebbink, OF/LHP, St. Joseph-Ogden, 2020
5-foot-8, 175-pound left-handed hitting OF/LHP. Offensively hits from an open setup with a short toe tap stride and good balance. Line drive, gap to gap hitter with a short, uphill swing path. 78 mph exit velocity from a tee. Ran the 60 at 7.95. Defensively has a short arm action from a high ¾ slot. Aggressive routes to the ball with a clean exchange. Threw 75 mph from the outfield. On the mound works from a high ¾ arm angle with a short arm action. Tall and fall delivery with regular effort. Falls towards third base after release. Fastball sat 69-71 topping out at 72 mph. Curveball has 2-8 shape at 56-60 mph. Changeup sat 62-65 mph.

Chase Gil, 1B/RHP, Minooka, 2020
6-foot-3, 175-pound two-way player, extremely long and lanky frame. Right-handed hitter, tall upright setup, narrow and open stance. Pull side approach in BP, works slightly uphill, 76 mph exit velocity from the tee. Defensively arm action is short and works from a high ¾ slot, 73 mph across the diamond. Long limbed target at first base, showed feel for the bag. 8.18 runner in the 60. On the mound fastball is straight, 72-74 mph, touched 76 mph. Curveball has 11/5 shape, 62-64 mph. Straight changeup showed slight fade, 66-69 mph.

John Hanson, INF/LHP, Neuqua Valley, 2020
5-foot-11, 145-pound, two-way prospect with a lanky, athletic build. At the plate, left-handed hitter, balanced setup, leg-kick timing trigger. Flashed loose hands, lifts the baseball and 76 mph exit velocity from a tee. Defensively, at first base, quick feet, comfortable working around the bag, clean transfer. Arm works long, high ¾ slot, topped at 65 mph across the diamond. 7.98 runner in the 60. On the mound, left-handed pitcher, slow paced, tall and fall delivery, works on-line and easy effort throughout. Same arm action as he showed in the field. Fastball sat 65-67 mph, topped at 69. Curveball worked 1/7, distinct shape, depth, 57-60 mph. Changeup, fastball arm action, 62-64 mph.

Nicholas Hemken, C/RHP, Edwardsville, 2020
6-foot-1, 175-pound two-way player, athletic frame with lean strength. Plus arm strength for age, short over the top arm action, carried well, 77 mph out of the crouch. Exchange is quick and clean, 2.05-2.18 pop times. Right-handed hitter, tall setup, short stride. Path works uphill, lifting swing. 85 mph exit velocity from the tee. 7.28 runner in the 60. On the mound arm action is quick and short, high ¾ slot. Fastball topped at 82 mph, sat 80-81 mph. Slider is 56-60 mph. Changeup is straight, 65-69 mph.

Jimmy Huizenger, LHP/OF, Downers Grove South, 2020
6-foot-3, 195-pound left-handed hitting LHP/OF with a lanky, athletic frame. On the mound works from a ¾ arm angle with a short, quick arm action. Tall and fall delivery, closed landing with a recoil finish. Fastball sat 74-76 mph. Curveball sat 58-60 mph. Maintained arm speed on changeup at 67-68 mph. Interesting upside on the mound needs to improve command. Offensively hits from a balanced setup, drop and bar load. Leg kick stride with fair balance. Pull hitter with an uphill swing path. 82 mph exit velocity from a tee. Ran the 60 at 7.83. Defensively has a short arm action from a high ¾ slot. Quick exchange, threw 72 mph from the outfield.

Tommy Kelly, INF/RHP, Peoria Notre Dame, 2020
6-foot-1, 175-pound, athletically built, strong, two-way prospect. Ran a 6.97 60, laser-timed. On the mound, right-handed pitcher, tall and fall delivery, lands open with regular effort throughout. Long, loose arm action, comes out of a high ¾ window. Fastball, slight arm-side-run, occasionally gets underneath, 78-79 mph. Curveball 11/5 shape, 63-65 mph. Changeup works mostly straight, down in the zone, 68-69 mph. At the plate, right-handed hitter, balanced, quiet setup, strides closed and long bat path through the zone. 83 mph exit velocity from a tee. Defensively, long arm action, winds up on transfer, throws clocked at 78 mph.

Mason Kottmeyer, RHP, Kaneland, 2020
6-foot-3, 155-pound right-handed pitcher, long lanky frame, thin and projects. Stretch only delivery, long levers, finishes down the hill. Arm action is long, high ¾ slot. Fastball flashes slight arm side run, 75-76 mph, touched 77 mph. Curveball has 12/6 shape, gradual action, 62-64 mph. Straight changeup is 65-68 mph.

Eric Lopez, OF/RHP, Curie, 2021
5-foot-6, 132-pound right-handed hitting OF/RHP. Balanced, closed setup with a short heel lift stride and minimal lower half involvement. Long, level swing path. 74 mph exit velocity from a tee. Ran the 60 at 7.88. Defensively has a long arm action from a high ¾ slot. Threw 67 mph from the outfield. On the mound works from a high ¾ arm angle with a long arm action. Tall and fall delivery working in line with home plate. Fastball sat 53-56 topping out at 59 mph. Curveball has gradual action at 51-53 mph. Changeup sat 52-56 mph.

Teddy Mamone, LHP, Homewood-Flossmoor, 2020
5-foot-10, 160-pound left-handed pitcher, lean build. Works from a low ¾ slot, short draw, loose and easy at times. Shoulders stay level throughout, above average feel for strike zone. Fastball showed control, 73-76 mph. Curveball has sweeping action, controlled for strikes, 60-63 mph. Changeup sinks, 64-69 mph.

Noah Manning, INF/RHP, Minooka, 2020
5-foot-11, 140-pound, long and lean, two-way prospect. On the mound, right-handed pitcher, slow paced, repeatable, tall and fall delivery, works on-line with home plate. Fastball thrown for strikes, 74-76 mph. Curveball worked 12/6, gradual action, ranged between 63-67 mph. Changeup, worked 66-71 mph. At the plate, open, narrow setup, stride gets to even. Uphill bat path, looks to lift the baseball and 72 mph exit velocity from a tee. On the infield, arm is long and firm, high ¾ slot, throws clocked at 71 mph. 7.56 runner in the 60.

Pedro Martinez, RHP/OF, Minooka, 2020
5-foot-11, 143-pound right-handed hitting RHP/OF with a lanky frame. On the mound works from a high ¾ arm angle with a short arm action. Tall and fall delivery with a short leg lift, slightly closed landing. Fastball was mostly straight, flashing occasional cutting action at 77-78 topping out at 79 mph. Curveball has 11-5 shape at 65-67 mph. Changeup has sinking action at 67-71 mph. Offensively hits from a wide base, short toe tap stride with good balance. Line drive hitter with loose hands and a short, level swing path. 81 mph exit velocity from a tee. Ran the 60 at 7.48. Defensively has a long, loose arm action from an over the top slot, Plays thru the ball with fluid footwork and a clean exchange. Threw 76 mph from the outfield.

Alex Mendez, RHP, St. Ignatius, 2021
5-foot-11, 165-pound right-handed pitcher. Drop and drive type delivery, open landing, arm action is long, over the top slot. Fastball flashes arm side run and sink, 72-73 mph, topped at 74 mph. Curveball has 12/6 shape, 61-64 mph. Straight changeup sits 68-70 mph.

Anthony Mondt, INF/RHP, St. Rita, 2021
5-foot-8, 145-pound, two-way prospect. At the plate, right-handed hitter, balanced setup, minimal load and short stride. Long bat path through the zone, opposite field approach. 71 mph exit velocity from a tee. Defensively, on the infield, winds up on exchange, long arm action, high ¾ slot, clocked at 68 mph. 8.40 runner in the 60. On the mound, right-handed pitcher, works from the stretch only. Delivery stays on-line, lands closed and works from a high ¾ slot. Fastball sat 64-66 mph, topped at 69. Knuckleball ranged between 56-59 mph.

Raymond Nepras, INF/RHP, Wheaton Warrenville South, 2020
6-foot-2, 155-pound, long and lean two-way prospect. At the plate, right-handed hitter, balanced setup, early load, hands and front foot work together and average balance through contact. Long, uphill bat path and 82 mph exit velocity from a tee. Defensively, loose arm action, from a ¾ to low ¾ slot, 72 mph across the infield. 7.51 runner in the 60. On the mound, right-handed pitcher, tall and fall delivery, some effort throughout and finishes towards first base. Arm works short and out of a high ¾ slot. Fastball sat 74-76 mph. Curveball worked 11/5, depth, 61-62 mph. Changeup sat 62-64 mph.

Michael Orozco, INF/RHP, Stagg, 2020
6-foot, 155-pound, lanky, athletically built, two-way prospect. Ran a 7.32 60, laser-timed. At the plate, left-handed hitter, balanced, closed setup, short stride and average balance through contact. Quick hands, uphill bat path and 72 mph exit velocity. Defensively, arm works short and loose, high ¾ slot, accurate throws, clocked at 73 mph. On the mound, right-handed pitcher, tall and fall delivery, short arm action from a ¾ window and easy effort throughout. Fastball sat 70-73 mph. Curveball, 10/4 shape, 62-64 mph. Changeup worked 63-65 mph.

Colton Powell, OF/RHP, Plainfield North, 2020
6-foot, 165-pound right-handed hitting OF/RHP. At the plate hits from a balanced setup, armbar load with a short stride and average balance. Pull hitter with an uphill swing path. 77 mph exit velocity from a tee. Ran the 60 at 8.02. Defensively has a short arm action from a high ¾ slot. Plays thru the ball with average hands. Threw 76 mph from the outfield. On the mound works from a high ¾ arm angle. Tall and fall delivery with regular effort. Fastball was straight at 70-72 topping out at 74 mph for strikes. Curveball has 11-5 shape at 61-65 mph. Changeup sat 64-67 mph.

Anthony Pullano, LHP/OF, Maine South, 2021
5-foot-11, 140-pound right-handed hitting LHP/OF. Offensively hits from a wide base, leg lift stride with a long uphill swing path. 74 mph exit velocity from a tee. Ran the 60 at 8.03. Defensively has a long arm action from a high ¾ slot. Accurate throws from the outfield, takes aggressive routes, with a quick, clean transfer. Threw 69 mph from the outfield. On the mound works from a ¾ arm angle with a long, loose arm action. Drop and drive delivery working in line with home plate. Fastball has sinking action at 68-69 topping out at 70 mph. Curveball has 2-8 shape with loose rotation at 57-61 mph. Also threw a knuckleball at 58-61 mph.

Carlos Quintero, RHP, St. Rita, 2020
5-foot-8, 160-pound right-handed pitcher, stocky build. Works from a long firm arm action, over the top slot, regular effort. Fastball runs to arm side, 74-76 mph. Mixes in two breaking balls, curveball plays 12/6, 68-70 mph, slider is softer at 66-67 mph. Changeup flashes sinking action, 69-71 mph.

Alexander Reyno, LHP/1B, N/A, 2023
5-foot-2, 120-pound, two-way prospect. Worked out as a left-handed pitcher and first baseman. At the plate, right-handed hitter, balanced setup, short stride, average balance. Uphill swing plane and pull approach; 61 mph exit velocity. Defensively at first base, short arm action, high ¾ slot, clocked at 54 mph across the diamond. On the mound, tall and fall delivery, lands slightly closed, short arm action, high ¾ slot. Fastball sat 50-52 mph, touched 53. Changeup sat 50-52 mph.

Owen Roesel, OF/RHP, Joliet Catholic, 2020
5-foot-11, 155-pound right-handed hitting OF/RHP. At the plate hits from a balanced setup, heel lift stride with average balance. Pull hitter with a slightly uphill swing path. 85 mph exit velocity from a tee. Ran the 60 at 7.42. Defensively has a long arm action from a ¾ slot. Plays thru the ball with fluid footwork. Threw 76 mph from the outfield. On the mound works from a ¾ arm angle with a long, loose arm action. Tall and fall delivery working in line with home plate. Fastball has running action at 76-78 mph. Curveball has 12-6 shape, comes out of a higher arm slot, at 63-66 mph. Changeup has sinking action at 64-67 mph.

Luis Salinas, RHP, St. Ignatius, 2020
5-foot-11, 150-pound right-handed pitcher, lean lanky frame. Submarine style delivery, short draw arm action, works across body out of a low lifted tucked balance position. Fastball has sinking action, some feel for strikes. 71-73 mph. Slider has 10/4, cut type action, 58-60 mph. Changeup ranges 62-68 mph.

Sam Sanchez, INF/RHP, Geneva, 2020
5-foot-8, 130-pound, lean, wiry, two-way prospect. Offensively, balanced setup, pre-pitch rhythm, short stride and average balance through contact. Simple swing, uphill bat path, flashed bat speed. 75 mph exit velocity from a tee. On the infield, long, firm arm action, high ¾ slot and throws clocked at 74 mph. Ran a 7.31 laser-timed 60. On the mound, right-handed pitcher, tall and fall delivery, works on-line and lands square. Long arm action out of a high ¾ slot. Fastball sat 72-74 mph, touched 75. Curveball gradual action, 56-59 mph. Changeup, thrown for strikes, 66-68 mph.

Henry Schuler, RHP, Joliet Catholic, 2020
5-foot-10, 145-pound right-handed pitcher, lean wiry frame. Works online from an over the top slot, longer arm action. Fastball ranged 75-78 mph, mostly straight, occasional sink. Curveball has 12/6 shape, 62-64 mph. Changeup is 66-69 mph, erratic at time with some sink.

Cade Sharp, 3B/RHP, Mercer County, 2020
6-foot-1, 210-pound two-way player. On the mound works from a deliberate rocker step to balance point, stays tall and direct. Arm action is loose and aggressive through release, shows arm speed and loose wrist out front, over the top slot. Fastball is mostly straight, 75-77 mph. Curveball has 12/6 shape, drops in at 59-64 mph. Changeup is thrown with fastball arm speed, 68-71 mph. Right-handed hitter, closed setup, short stride.
