By Ryan Quigley
Illinois Scouting Director

The Prep Baseball Report Underclass Showcase featured 89 prospects in the 2017 and 2018 classes on October 26th indoors at the MAX in McCook, IL. Over the next several days the PBR Scouting staff will roll out position-by-position rankings of the event, culminating with the Top Ten Overall Prospects from the showcase.

After highlighting each individual position, today we’ll take a look at the pitchers. The Underclass showcase featured 2017 and 2018 prospects, therefore many players haven’t specialized position wise yet, so we had a large amount of pitchers to evaluate. Regardless, it allows to see the athleticism of many top prospects when they step on the mound as well, even if their future may be somewhere else on the diamond.

Mount Carmel’s Cameron Hupe gives the Caravan a second top ranked 2017 prospect, joining teammate Zion Pettigrew (the No. 1 ranked middle infielder of the event). Hupe sat in the 84-86 mph range and we’ve seen him up to 87 mph this fall. He projects to add more velocity as he continue to fills out his already sturdy and athletic 6-foot-1 frame.

Plainfield South’s Austin Marozas left an impression on the PBR scouting staff equally as large as his 6-foot-5 frame, sitting 84-86 mph. Marozas showed the ability to throw all four of his pitches for strikes, and has the makings of a power breaking ball.

St. Laurence’s Thomas Farrell impressed with his running fastball and sinking changeup from the left side. Farrell has legitimate two-way ability, and should be a mainstay on the mound and at first base for the Vikings over the next several years.

Lake View’s Justin Diaz took his smooth arm action from the middle infield and transferred it to the mound. Diaz sat 81-84 mph with a feel for two different breaking balls.

Dylan Jones (Oswego East) is a physical specimen who impressed in the outfield with his speed (7.14 60) and arm strength. He’s raw on the mound, but showcased the top velocity at the event, topping out at 87 mph. Jones is one of the top all-around athletes in the 2017 class.

On Monday, we’ll take a look at the Top Overall Prospect’s from the event.

Let’s take a look at the top pitching prospects from this October’s Underclass Showcase.

Top Pitching Prospects
