Inside the 2020 Rankings: Uncommitted Catchers

After a long summer and fall of tournaments and showcases, here is an inside look at Kansas' 2020 Rankings.  Today, we take a look at available catchers in the 2020 class from around the Sunflower State. Players are listed in alphabetical order.

2020 CATCHERS

 

 

Evan Borberg C / RHP / Shawnee Mission Northwest, KS / 2020

Borberg is a 5-foot-9 170-pound right-handed hitting catcher and right-handed pitcher in Kansas' 2020 class.  He ran a 5.14 home to first, 7.98 60 and had a 79 mph exit velocity. At the plate, open set up, thin base, simple load, no wasted movement, free and independent hands, level path, middle of the field approach.  Behind the plate, wide set up in base, hands and feet work together, clean exchange, feet create momentum to throw, mostly accurate throws, pop times between 2.07 and 2.14-seconds, 74 mph positional velocity. On the mound, Borberg has a controlled leg lift, accelerates tempo down the mound, throws with some effort, high three quarters arms lot, finishes in athletic position, fastball at 78-80 mph, sone with two-seam action, curveball has 12-to-6 shape, sharp and late break, bottom of the zone, 65-67 mph, change up with late sink at 66-69 mph, fastball arm speed, throws for strike.


Andrew Brubeck C / 3B / Mill Valley, KS / 2020

Brubeck is a 5-foot-11 185-pound right-handed hitting catcher in Missouri’s 2020 class.  He ran a 7.57 60 and a 4.36 home to first.  He had an 86 mph exit velocity. At the plate, balanced in stance, rhythm in hands, loads against back side, level path with controlled bat speed, gap to gap line drives, has feel for the barrel.  Behind the plate, pop times between 2.05 and 2.09 seconds, 72 mph positional velocity, wide base in set up, fluid footwork with momentum to throw working in line towards second base, over the top release, mostly accurate throws some with carry to the bag. On the infield, 74 mph positional velocity, controlled actions, clean transfer with soft hands, made all plays cleanly, fluid footwork to the ball, mostly accurate throws.


Brett Bulkeley C / Blue Valley , KS / 2020

Bulkeley is a 5-foot-10 180-pound right-handed hitting catcher in Kansas' 2020 class.  He ran a 4.84 home to first, a 7.20 60, and has a 79 mph exit velocity. At the plate, balanced set up, minimal load, short in line stride, quick bat speed, level bat path, gap to gap line drives.  Behind the plate, slightly staggered set up in base, over the top release, short take away from glove, feet work through the catch on time with clean exchange, throws have carry to the bag, pop times between 2.15 and 2.33-seconds, 78 mph positional velocity.


Colby Coda C / RHP / Blue Valley, KS / 2020

Coda is a strong 6-foot 194-pound right-handed hitting catcher in Kansas' 2020 class.  He ran a 7.28 60, a 5.01 home to first and has an 87 mph exit velocity. At the plate, balanced set up, smooth and efficient load to back side, hands start away from body, minimal hand movement in load, flashes pull side power.  Behind the plate, over the top release, balanced base, fluid footwork with clean exchange, mostly accurate throws, pop times between 1.95 and 2.20-seconds, 74 mph positional velocity.


Jake Dolesh C / OF / Blue Valley Northwest, KS / 2020

Dolesh is an athletically built 5-foot-11 155-pound right-handed hitting catcher in Kansas' 2020 class.  He ran a 7.50 60, a 4.89 home to first and had an 88 mph exit velocity. At the plate, balanced set up, smooth pre-pitch rhythm into a controlled load into back side, quiet hands, in line stride, quick and loose bat speed, gap to gap line drives, showed feel for the barrel.  Behind the plate, slightly staggered set up in base, short over the top arm slot, quick feet with quick exchange, throws are mostly accurate with carry, 2.02 to 2.21 pop times, 76 mph positional velocity.


Diego Escamillla C / SS / Haisville campus, KS / 2020

Escamilla is a 5-foot-9 165-pound right-handed hitting catcher and shortstop in Kansas’ 2020 class.  He ran a  7.04 60 and a 4.50 home to first.  He has an 84 mph exit velocity. At the plate, open stance, slight hand load with stride, level path through the zone, works both gaps.  Behind the plate, pop times between 2.15 and 2.28-seconds, 74 mph positional velocity, footwork creates momentum to throw, clean exchanges, over the top arm slot. On the infield, 79 mph positional velocity, over the top arm slot, gains momentum with footwork after the catch, fields ball in athletic position, clean glove to hand exchange, mostly accurate throws


Tysaac Noland C / 2B / Maize South, KS / 2020

Noland is a 5-foot-11 150-pound switch-hitting catcher and right-handed pitcher in Kansas 2020 class.  He ran a 7.50 60, a 4.88 home to first and has an 84 mph exit velocity. At the plate, starts slightly open, short in line stride, hands separate from stride, gap to gap approach with level swing plane.  Behind the plate, pop times between 2.07 and 2.15-seconds, high three quarters arms slot, staggered set up in feet, fluid exchange on time with momentum in footwork, mostly accurat throws, some with carry to the bag. On the mound, Noland comes from a short high three quarters arm slot, body stays under control, throws with regular effort and smooth rhythm, fastball at 74-78 mph, slight late sinking action, breaking ball has 11-to-5 action, gradual break, lands for a strike, 67-68 mph, change up at 67-68 mph, some arm side release, throws for a strike.


Aidan Thompson C / 3B / Olathe North, KS / 2020

Thompson is a 5-foot-11 190-pound right-handed hitting catcher in Kansas’ 2020 class.  He ran a 7.54 60 and a 4.56 home to first.  He has an 88 mph exit velocity. At the plate, open stance, minimal load, attacks the ball, level bat path through contact, works the middle of the field, stays balanced throughout swing.  Behind the plate, pop times between 1.92 and 2.13-seconds, 74 mph positional velocity, sits low and square with flexibility in hips, catches ball out front with clean exchanges as he replaces his feet, throws with momentum and accuracy. 


Eli Schnee C / 3B / Clay Center, KS / 2020

Schnee is a strong 5-foot-11 185-pound right-handed hitting catcher in Kansas’ 2020 class.  He ran a 4.64 home to first and had a 91 mph exit velocity. At the plate, open stance, minimal hand movement, short and controlled leg lift, level path through the zone, gap to gap line drives. Behind the plate, quit and controlled actions, short first step with right foot on time with exchange, quick release, high three quarters release, 71 mph positional velocity.


JD Van Horn C / 3B / Ottawa, KS / 2020

Van Horn is a strong 5-foot-11, 180-pound, right-handed hitting catcher with a stocky build. At the event, he ran a 7.81 second 60 and posted an exit velocity of 84 mph. At the plate, Van Horn, starts in an athletic position, rhythm to his load, loose hands, leverages front side, looks to lift the baseball, sprayed hard contact throughout batting practice. Behind the plate, clean transfers, clean arm action working from an over the top release, positional velo of 72 mph, mostly accurate throws, pop times between 2.11-2.33 seconds.


Mikey Welsh C / 1B / Bishop Miege, KS / 2020

Welsh is a 6-foot 180-pound left-handed hitting catcher in Kansas' 2020 class.  He ran a 8.12 60, a 4.89 home to first and has an 89 mph exit velocity. At the plate, balanced set up, smooth load to back leg, accelerates after stride, stays square, level path, works inside the ball, middle of the field approach.  Behind the plate, over the top arm slot, fluid exchange on time with quick footwork, throws have carry and are mostly accurate, pop times between 2.09 and 2.18-seconds, 74 mph positional velocity.


Spencer Whitfield C / 1B / McPherson, KS / 2020

Whitfield is a well built 6-foot 195-pound switch hitting catcher in Kansas’ 2020 class.  He ran a 4.82 home to first and a 7.90 60.  He had an 80 mph exit velocity. At the plate, simple and repeatable from both sides, pre pitch rhythm in hands, minimal load, in line stride, slightly longer swing from left side with pull approach, works gap to gap from right side, slight lift in bat path during finish.  Behind the plate, staggered set up with thing base, over the top arm slot, mostly accurate throws, 70 mph positional velocity, 2.04 to 2.08-second pop times. On the infield, 75 mph positional velocity, over the top arm slot, aggressive and quick the ball with footwork, clean exchanges with mostly accurate throws.
