Kansas City Winter Open: Middle Infilder Analysis

On February 16, Prep Baseball Report - Missouri/Kansas held the Kansas City Open at Mac N Seitz Baseball in Kansas City, Missouri.  Over 70 players attended in the 2021 to 2018 classes. 

Players can now updated their profiles with a ProspectPlus subscription, while scouts and recruiters can add players on the ScoutPlus dashboard.

Player profiles have been updated with profile picture, running times, velocities, and videos.  Today will take a closer look at the middle infielders from the event. Players are listed in alphabetical order below.

The middle infield group included seven players in the 2019 class, seven players in the 2020 class, and two player in the 2021 class. Seven players had an 85 mph or better exit velo, and seven players had infield velos at 80 mph or better.  Here is a look at the middle infielders from the Kansas City Open

Middle Infielders

Ryan Callahan SS / RHP / Blue Valley Northwest, KS / 2020

Callahan is a 6-foot-3 170-pound left-handed hitting shortstop in Kansas’ 2020 clas.  He ran a 4.06 home to first and has an 85 mph exit velocity. At the plate, start in an open stance, some hand load, smooth rhythm with toe tap and in line stride, loose hand with level path through extension, gap to gap line drives, consistent hard contact.  On the infield, 83 mph positional velocity, soft hands and athletic actions, hands and feet work in sync, feet creates momentum to throw, clean exchanges with high three quarters release, accurate throws. 

Owen Chaffin RHP / SS / Blue Valley Southwest , KS / 2019

Chaffin is a strong, with some length, 6-foo-1 170-pound right-handed hitting shortstop in Kansas’ 2019 class. He ran a 4.45 home to first and has an 86 mph exit velocity. At the plate, balanced stance, quiet hands with weight shift to back leg to load, leg kick with in line stride, loose hands with level path through extension, flashed power to pull side, mostly middle line drives. On the infield, 82 mph positional velocity, high three quarters release, works behind the ball and through the catch, active feet on time with clean exchanges, has momentum to throw, soft hands, accurate thrower.

Kolin Demel SS / RHP / Blue Valley Southwest, KS / 2020

Demel is a 5-foot-11 163-pound right-handed hitting shortstop in Kansas’ 2020 class. He ran a 4.43 home to first and has an 87 mph exit velocity. At the plate, balanced stance with a calm load, some pre-pitch rhythm in hands, body stays under control, hand create level path to extension, quick bat speed, gap to gap approach. On the infield, 76 mph positional velocity,  high three quarters release, quick transfer with fluid footwork, mostly accurate throws.

William Hann RHP / SS / Olathe West, KS / 2019

Hann is a strong and well-built 6-foot-1 184-pound right-handed hitting shortstop in Kansas’ 2019 class.  He ran a 4.86 home to first and has an 85 mph exit velocity. At the plate, balanced stance, reverse toe tap, pre-pitch rhythm in hands, in line stride, aggressive swing with mostly middle to pull side contact, flashes pull side power.  On the infield, 84 mph positional velo, long arm circle and aggressive with momentum after the catch, quick feet to the ball with clean exchanges, loose arm action, mostly accurate throws with carry.

Griffin Henry SS / RHP / Lee's Summit West, MO / 2020

Henry is an athletic 6-foot-1 170-pound right-handed hitting shortstop in Missouri’s 2020 class.  He ran a 4.49 home to first and has an 84 mph exit velocity. At the plate, starts slightly open, slight separation in hands as he strides, calm stride with accelerated hands to contact, loose hands with level path, feel for the barrel, gap to gap line drives.  On the infield, 82 mph positional velocity, athletic and active feet to the ball creating momentum to throw, quick transfer and throw, over the top release, arm works from different angles, accurate thrower.

Dylan Hufft SS / 2B / Park Hill South, MO / 2021

Hufft is a 5-foot-11 160-pound right-handed hitting shortstop in Missouri’s 2021 class.  He ran a 4.47 home to first and has an 83 mph exit velocity. Hufft, smooth pre-pitch rhythm, balanced and athletic stance, controlled leg lift, loose hands, level path though extension, solid gap to gap line drives.  On the infield, quick catch and throw, 82 mph positional velocity, clean and quick actions, mostly accurate throws, plenty of room to add strength to athletic build.

Jason Jakubec SS / 2B / Kearney, MO / 2019

Jakubec is a 5-foot-11 160-pound right-handed hitting shortstop in Missouri’s 2019 class.  He ran a 4.46 home to first and has an 85 mph exit velocity. At the plate, tall and balanced stance, calm leg lift, short in line stride, body stays under control, level path with middle to pull line drives, repeats swing, aggressive hand speed. On the infield, 76 mph positional velocity, three quarters arm slot, clean exchanges and fluid footwork in sync, accurate throws with feet creating momentum to throw. 

Luke Ludwig SS / 2B / Staley, MO / 2020

Ludwig is a long and lean 6-foot 165-pound left-handed hitting shortstop in Missouri’s 2020 class.  He ran a 4.07 home to first and has an 83 mph exit velocity. At the plate, starts in a wide base with high hands, simple load with short in line stride, hands control the bat head, level swing plane with gap to gap contact.  On the infield, 71 mph positional velocity, fields the ball in an athletic position, get rid of ball quickly and accurately, active feet with momentum to throw, works behind ball. 

Blake Mozley SS / 2B / Ozark , MO / 2019

Mozley is a strong and athletic 5-foot-10 165-pound left-handed hitting shortstop in Missouri’s 2019 class.  He ran a 4.13 home to first and has an 88 mph exit velocity. At the plate, smooth rhythm pre-pitch, tall stance with line stride, loose hands with feel for the barrel, accelerates to contact, hands work inside the ball, consistent hard contact gap to gap in hitting evals.  On the infield, 85 mph positional velocity, athletic actions, quick hands with quick catch and throw, aggressive to the ball, arm works with loose action, accurate thrower with carry, shows to be one of the top infielders in his class.

Chase Pearson OF / SS / Blue Valley Northwest, KS / 2019

Pearson is a 5-foot-7 140-pound right-handed hitting shortstop in Kansas’ 2019 class.  He ran a 4.38 home to first an has an 80 mph exit velocity. At the plate, open stance, starts loaded in back leg, mostly quiet hands, level bat path, hands work inside the ball, consistent contact gap to gap. On the infield, 77 mph positional velocity, three quarters release, quick to the ball with clean exchange and soft hands, works through the ball gaining ground with feet to throw, mostly accurate throws.

William Ponce SS / RHP / Olathe West, KS / 2020

Ponce is a 5-foot-7 135-pound left-handed hitting shortstop in Missouri’s 2020 class.  He ran a 4.16 home to first and has a 74 mph exit velocity. At the plate, balanced stance, loads with weight shift to back side, hands control the bat, loose whip and level path, middle to pull side contact.  On the infield, 74 mph positional velocity, three quarters arm slot, quick catch and throw, fields ball in athletic position, clean transfers, mostly accurate throws.

Anthony Ramirez SS / 2B / Lees Summit West, MO / 2020

Ramirez is a 5-foot-10 170-pound right-handed hitting shortstop in Missouri’s 2020 class.  He ran a 4.76 home to first and has an 84 mph exit velocity. At the plate, open stance, weight shift to back side to lead, in line stride, level path through hitting zone, works the middle of the field with gap to gap approach.  On the infield, 76 mph positional velocity, over the top release, gains ground to first base after field ball in athletic position, throws are accurate and flash carry.

Alex Rodriguez SS / 2B / Park Hill South, MO / 2019

Rodriguez is a 5-foot-9 165-pound right-handed hitting shortstop in Missouri’s 2019 class.  He ran a 4.41 home to first and has an 83 mph exit velocity. At the plate, balanced stance, some hand movement and rotation in load, has feel for the barrel, mostly middle to pull contact, showed ability to repeat swing.  On the infield, 83 mph position velocity, quick and loose arm action, quick transfers with quick release, stays under control with quick feet, mostly accurate throws with carry.

James Sweeton SS / RHP / Lee's Summit West, MO / 2021

Sweeton is a 5-foot-5 120-pound right-handed hitting shortstop in Missouri’s 2021 class.  He ran a 4.60 home to first and has a 70 mph exit velocity. At the plate, balanced stance, smooth pre-pitch rhythm, minimal load, attacks ball, quick bat speed with loose hands, middle line drives with gap to gap approach.  On the infield, 69 mph positional velocity, over the top release with long arm circle, quick feet to the ball with clean exchanges, mostly accurate throws.

Christian Whiting SS / 2B / Lees Summit North, MO / 2020

Whiting is a 6-foot 140-pound right-handed hitting shortstop in Missouri’s 2020 class.  He ran a 4.46 home to first and has an 87 mph exit velocity. At the plate, simple and repeatable swing, balanced stance, minimal load with no wasted movement, level path through extension, stays on ball, gap to gap line drives, occasional pull side pop.  On the infield, 73 mph positional velocity, short over the top release, controlled and fluid actions and feet to the ball, gathers feet with clean exchange, creates momentum to throw, mostly accurate throws.

Hayden Zimmerman 2B / SS / Winnetonka, MO / 2019

Zimmerman is a 5-foot-5 140-pound right-handed hitting second baseman in Missouri’s 2019 class.  He ran a 4.69 home to first and has a 69 mph exit velocity. At the plate, open stance, in line stride, minimal load, hands control the bat with body staying under control, gap to gap approach.  On the infield, 59 mph positional velocity, three quarters release, clean and quick exchanges and aggressive to the ball with feet, mostly accurate throws.
