MOKAN Fall Trials: Corner Infield Analysis

Prep Baseball Report Missouri/Kansas held the MOKAN Fall Trials on October 28 at the Urban Youth Academy in Kansas City, Missouri.  Over 40 players in Missouri and Kansas in the 2022 to 2019 classes attended.

Players can now updated their profiles with a ProspectPlus subscription, while scouts and recruiters can add players on the ScoutPlus dashboard.

Player profiles have been updated with profile picture, running times, velocities, and videos.  Today will take a closer look at the corner infielders from the event. Players are listed in alphabetical order below.

Corner Infielders

Toby Becker C / 3B / Rock Creek, KS / 2019

Becker is a 6-foot-3 195-pound right-handed hitting third baseman in Kansas’ 2019 class.  He ran a 7.46 60 and a 4.90 home to first.  He has an 85 mph exit velocity.  At the plate, balanced and tall set up, rhythm in hands pre-pitch, hands walk away from short in line stride to load, level path, stays in lower half with balance, occasional pull side power. On the infield, 71 mph positional velocity, stays under control to the ball, gains ground with footwork after the catch, fields ball in athletic position, short over the top arm slot, mostly accurate throws.

Derek Blackmore 1B / OF / Rockhurst HS, MO / 2021

Blackmore is a 5-foot-10 195-pound left-handed hitting first baseman in Missouri’s 2021 class.  He ran a 8.40 60 and a 5.14 home to first.  He has an 82 mph exit velocity. At the plate, starts in a wide base, loaded in back leg, controlled leg lift, middle to pull side line drives, simple and repeatable swing mechanics.  Defensively at first base, Blackmore showed his athleticism, fluid footwork, quick arm action, clean transfers, high three-quarter release, positional velocity of 70 mph, mostly accurate throws.

Ja'Ron Byrd 3B / OF / Shawnee Mission North , KS / 2021

Byrd is a physically built 6-foot-4 215-pound right-handed hitting third baseman in Kansas’ 2021 class.  He ran a 7.20 60 and a 4.77 home to first.  He has a 91 mph exit velocity. At the plate, tall set up with rhythm in hands, slight weight shift to back side, short in line stride, toe tap, quick and strong hands, some lift at the end of bat path, showed flashes of power to the pull gap.  On the infield, short high three quarters arms lot, controlled footwork to the ball, clean exchange with quick catch and throw, build and athleticism will create increases as he continues to develop.

Nathan Camby 1B / 2B / Truman , MO / 2019

Camby is an athletically built 6-foot-3 195-pound right-handed hitting first baseman in Missouri’s 2019 class.  He ran a 7.56 60 and a 4.94 home to first.  He has an 85 mph exit velocity.  At the plate, tall set up with no wasted movement in load, quiet hands with short stride, accelerated bat speed, loose hands, level through the zone, occasional power to pull side with gap to gap contact during hitting evals.  On the infield, 71 mph positional velocity, three quarters arm slot, stays under control, feet create momentum to throw after the catch, feet in sync with exchange, mostly accurate throws.

Garrett Combs 3B / C / Blue Springs , MO / 2020

Combs is a 5-foot-7 197-pound right-handed hitting third baseman in Missouri’s 2020 class.  He ran a 8.01 60 and a 5.35 home to first.  He has an 88 mph exit velocity.  At the plate, balanced set up, slight pre-pitch rhythm in low half, short in line stride, consistent line drives gap to gap during hitting evals, quiet hands with feel for the barrel.  On the infield, 64 mph positional velocity, over the top arm slot, made all plays cleanly, aggressive to the ball, clean exchange, mostly accurate throws.

Joshua Kilpatrick 1B / LHP / Grain Valley, MO / 2020

Kilpatrick is a long and lean 6-foot-5 180-pound left-handed hitting first baseman in Missouri’s 2020 class.  He ran a 7.19 60 and a 4.64 home to first.  He has a 78 mph exit velocity. At the plate, starts loaded on back side with square base, hands start separated, short stride, accelerated bat, loose hands generate bat whip, level bat plane, gap to gap approach, occasional pull side power.  On the infield, short over the top arm slot, quick catch and throw, 72 mph positional velocity, fluid actions to the ball, works through the ball with momentum in feet, mostly accurate throws.

Cal Leonard RHP / 3B / Iola, KS / 2020

Leonard is a lean and long 6-foot-2 180-pound right-handed hitting third baseman in Kansas’ 2020 class.  He ran a 7.90 60 and 4.87 home to first.  He has an 82 mph exit velocity. At the plate, balanced stance, pre-pitch rhythm in hands, hands separate from stride during load, controlled leg lift with in-line stride, has barrel control squaring up ball to pull side gap during hitting evals, high finish in hands. On the infield, 79 mph positional velocity, short high three quarters release, clean arm action, fluid footwork to the allows him to field in an athletic position, clean exchange, mostly accurate throws.

Austin Mann 1B / OF / Liberty North, MO / 2021

Austin Mann is a 6-foot-1 195-pound right-handed hitting first baseman in Missouri’s 2021 class.  He ran a 7.80 60 and 4.83 home to first.  He had an 86 mph exit velocity. At the plate, starts in a tall stance with high hands, works hands downward to load minimal weight shift with inline stride, middle to pull side contact, has lift to bat path with high finish.  On the infield, 76 mph positional velocity, high three quarters arm slot, long arm circle, aggressive to the ball, clean exchange with soft hands, mostly accurate throws.

Maxwell Orton 1B / LHP / Shawnee Heights, KS / 2021

Orton is a 5-foot-8 150-pound left-handed hitting first baseman in Kansas’ 2021 class.  He Ran a 7.70 60 and a 4.56 home to first.  He has a 79 mph exit velocity. At the plate,  starts with wide base, pre-pitch rhythm in lower half, hands load with in line stride, quick bat speed, level plane through the zone, mostly pull side side contact during hitting evals, stays balanced.  On the infield, 71 mph positional velocity, athletic actions, quick to the ball with footwork, quick catch and throw, loose over the top arm slot, aggressive, mostly accurate throws.

Troy Wansing LHP / 1B / Staley, MO / 2021

Wansing is a well built 6-foot-3 190-pound left-handed hitting first baseman in Missouri’s 2021 class. He ran a 7.36 60 and a4.69 home to first.  He has an 86 mph exit velocity. At the plate, balanced stance, slight weight shift to back side with quiet hands to load, controlled leg kick, accelerates though contact, level and quick bat path, consistent line drives gap to gap during evals.  On the infield, 74 mph positional velocity, fluid and controlled action, over the top release, clean exchange with footwork creating momentum to the ball and through the catch, mostly accurate throws.
