Class of 2018 Games: Catchers Analysis

Prep Baseball Report-Kansas/Missouri held the Class of 2018 Games on June 27 at Washburn University in Topeka, Kansas. Over 50 players took part in the event from around region.
Player profiles have been updated with video, running times, throwing velocities and profile picture. In the days to come, we will break down the event position-by-position. Today, we will take a look at the catchers from the event. Players are listed in alphabetical order.
Coaches will have new profiles to add their dashboard on ScoutPlus and players will be able to update information on their profile with ProspectPlus.

Catchers
Brett Baker C / Blue Springs South, MO / 2018Baker is a 5-foot-11 172 pound right handed hitting catcher in Missouri’s 2018 class. He ran an 8.22 laser timed 60 and a 4.85 home-to-first. He showed an exit velocity of 79 mph. At the plate, Richardson showed the ability to hit line drives to the opposite field while starting with an open stance, a minimal load and being short/quick to the baseball. Behind the plate, pop times were recorded between 2.19-2.34 seconds, 68 mph positional velocity, a smooth exchange and mostly accurate throws. While in the outfield, Richardson showed clean footwork, a positional velo of 70 mph, worked well towards his target with mostly accurate throws. |
Peyton Brown C / Frontenac, KS / 2018Brown is a 5-foot-11 170-pound right-handed hitting catcher in Kansas’ 2018 class. Brown ran a 7.37 laser timed 60 and a 4.53 home-to-first. He posted an exit velo of 86 mph. During batting practice, Brown showed the ability to stay inside the ball while hitting hard line drives, quiet hands, extension through contact. During the game, Brown doubled to the right center gap while showing a 4.75 home-to-first (rounded). Defensively, he showed decent actions, quick arm speed, a positional velo of 73 mph, pop times ranging from 2.00-2.14 seconds and mostly accurate throws. |
Ben Buchinger C / Liberty, MO / 2018Buchinger has a big frame at 6-foot 197-pound right handed hitting catcher and RHP in Kansas’ 2018 class. He ran a 8.48 laser timed 60 and a 4.52 home-to-first. Buchinger displayed an exit velo of 84 mph, line drives to the opposite field in batting practice, simple swing, quick hands. He went 1-for-3 in game action with a single up the middle. Behind the plate, Buchinger has a positional velo of 73 mph with pop times between 2.13-2.34 seconds and mostly accurate throws. On the mound, Buchinger is a strike thrower, accelerates down the mound by driving off his backside. He has an over the top arm slot to command his fastball between 76-80 mph, a changeup with cutting action at near fastball arm speed and curveball that shows 11-to-5 gradual action. |
Reese Carmona C / Lawrence , KS / 2018Carmona is an athletic and slender framed left-handed hitting catcher in Kansas’ 2018 class. He ran a 7.11 laser timed 60 and 4.32 home-to-first. He showed an exit velocity of 82 mph. Carmona displayed a simple swing that was quick to the baseball, barrel was flat through the zone, quiet hands while spraying line drives to all fields during batting practice. During the game Carmona showed a disciplined approach with a good eye for the strike zone. Defensively, behind the plate, his pop times were between 2.07-2.24 seconds, a positional velo of 72 mph, good actions, loads up with his arm while working forward towards the target. While in the outfield Carmona showed quality footwork, smooth actions, works behind the ball and showed a positional velo of 79 mph and accurate throws. |
Ryan Dix C / Salina Central, KS / 2018Dix is a 5-foot-11 185-pound right handed hitting catcher in Kansas’ 2018 class. He ran a 7.58 laser timed 60 and a 4.50 home-to-first. Dix’s exit velocity was 79 mph while spraying line drives and fly balls during batting practice. At the plate, Dix showed a slight upper cut swing, balanced stance with a leg lift in load while making solid contact. Defensively, Dix’s pop times ranged between 2.13-2.22 seconds, mostly accurate throws, a positional velocity of 73 mph, directional footwork and a quick transfer. |
Connor Jeffers C / Burlington , KS / 2018Jeffers is a strong and athletic 5-foot-11 185-pound right-handed hitting catcher in Kansas’ 2018 class. He ran a 7.02 laser timed 60 and a 4.21 home-to-first. He showed an exit velo of 92 mph, which put him in the top 5 at the event. At the plate, Jeffers starts with a slightly open stance, balance throughout his swing, quiet hands and power to the opposite field. Jeffers was 3-for-4 with 3 singles in game action. In the outfield, he was aggressive to the baseball, good footwork, positional velo of 82 mph with fairly accurate throws. Behind the plate, Jeffers pop times ranged from 2.01-2.14 seconds, fairly accurate throws, fluid footwork, quick hands and release. |
Colten Richardson C / Valley Center , KS / 2018Richardson is a 5-foot-9 145-pound right-handed hitting catcher and middle infielder in Kansas’ 2018 class. He ran a 7.46 laser timed 60 and a 4.71 home-to-first. Richardson’s exit velo was 81 mph, which is an improvement from last year’s event. During batting practice, Richardson displayed pop to all fields with a smooth stroke, a minimal load, loose/quiet hands that are quick to the baseball. Defensively behind the plate Richardson’s pop times were recorded between 1.99 and 2.04 seconds, 73 mph positional velocity, quick transfers, fluid footwork and very accurate throws. On the infield, he displayed solid footwork, smooth actions, a positional velocity of 78 mph with very accurate throws. |
Treven Veltman C / Wichita West, KS / 2018Veltman is a 6-foot 170-pound right handed hitting catcher in Kansas’ 2018 class. He ran a 7.61 laser timed 60 and a 4.50 home-to-first. During batting practice he sprayed line drives, shows a tall stance, simple load, flat barrel path and an exit velo of 85 mph. Defensively, Veltman has a quick arm and release, controls body well, positional velo of 77 mph and pop times ranged between 2.00-2.12 seconds. On the mound, Veltman has a repeatable delivery, commands both sides the plate with his fastball which showed occasional cut and was 80-82 mph. He threw his changeup at 70 mph with near fastball arm speed and showed a sharp breaking ball with 11-5 type action. Veltman showed clean arm action and works downhill. |
Josh Zellak C / Liberty, MO / 2018Zellak is a 5-foot-11 180-pound right-handed hitting catcher in Missouri’s 2018 class. He ran a 7.68 laser timed 60, a 4.72 home-to-first and showed an exit velo of 86 mph. At the plate, Zellak has an abbreviated leg lift in his load, in line stride, level bat path, and showed extension through contact. Defensively, Zellak was balanced, solid footwork, a quick transfer, positional velo of 71 mph and pop times ranging from 2.13-2.23 with mostly accurate throws. |
