POW - Week 6

Buddy Gouldsmith
Nevada Scouting Director

Spring has officially arrived and play across the state has heated up.  Officially in the home stretch of the season with just under three weeks of regular season play remaining, players are handing in some outstanding performances. Nearly 50 homeruns hit, this week and some stellar outings on the mound, made decision difficult.

Northern Nevada

The Northern Nevada pitcher of the week honors belong to '19 August Souza.  Souza, a Santa Clara commit, earns the award after a 2-hit complete game shutout. He struck out nine this past Saturday and walked just one. The win placed Souza’s Reno Huskies securely in first place and means that Spanish Springs will have to rely on others to knock off the Huskies for any hope of securing the regular season Division Championship.

The Reno Huskies corral all the hardware this week with first baseman, '19 Ryan Hess (1B) earning the Player of the Week honor.  A University of the Sciences commit, Hess was 7 for 10, playing a major role in Reno’s three wins with a number of key hits and RBI. As a side note, Hess also picked up the save in two of three wins.

Southern Nevada

Mojave’s ’20 Michael Cianci (RHP) earns the Southern Nevada Pitcher of the Week after hurling a perfect game versus the Del Sol Dragons this past Thursday. Cianci struck out 14 of the 21 batters he faced, including striking out the side on three separate occasions.

Player of the week honors belong to '19 Jacob Ortega (Faith Lutheran).  The UNLV commit went 6 for 9, including 3BBs, a HR and 8 RBI. In addition to his offensive play, Ortega made a number of excellent defensive saves as well. He is a big reason the Crusaders cracked PBR Nevada’s Power 25 ranking this week.

For their exception performances, PBR Nevada congratulates August Souza (Reno), Ryan Hess (Reno), Michael Cianci (Mojave), and Jacob Ortega (Faith Lutheran) for their Prep Baseball Report Nevada Player of the Week, April 8-14.
