Future Games Recap: Pitchers
August 8, 2019
Team New York's third year at the Prep Baseball Report Future Games as a full squad yielded some of the best talent so far, including a collection of arms that kept coaches close by.
Right Handed Pitchers
Chris Sleeper RHP / Rush Henrietta, NY / 2021The broad shouldered righty showed the ability to sink and moved the ball while sitting 88-89 on day one, touching 90 MPH. Works from a 3/4 slot, repeats delivery and held velocity in his 2nd inning on Day 1. Slider showed some tilt at 78-79 including some sharp back footers to a few LHH. Showed a plus change up featuring late sink fade on both days at 77-79 MPH. Swing and miss pitch.
Carson Cotugno RHP / Amsterdam, NY / 2021Long and lean build with a loose, easy effort arm action from a 3/4 slot. Plenty of room for physical additions. First inning of work had him at 88-89 MPH with a sharp, 2-tier slider at 77-80 MPH. Slight velo dip from the stretch with slide step and into his second inning. High ceiling arm that will continue to progress. Addition of change up should fit arm action and arm slot well.
Owen Wendell-Braly RHP / Millbrook Prep, NY / 2021Long limbed build with room to fill out. Deliberate pace; creates down angle to FB at 87-88 MPH; threw a spotless first inning on Day 1 pounding the fastball down while showing more of a slider action breaker at 77-79 MPH. On Day three breaking ball showed more in the 11-5 range at 76-77 with depth.
Matthew Mariano RHP / Shenendehowa, NY / 2021Proportional build with a short, quick arm swing. Stride opens up some to allow for a higher arm slot to get out in front. Worked 86-87 MPH with some arm side sink; slight velocity drop from the stretch. Breaking ball was a hybrid of CB/SL with some at 72-73 and others at 76 MPH. No true distinction between the different velocities but there was sharp action at times. Mixed a power change up on day three at 77-80 MPH.
Troy Butler RHP / Fort Plain , NY / 2021Athletic build with square shoulders; works primarily from the stretch with a simple, controlled delivery. On day one Butler sat 85-87 down in the zone with a change up that showed fade with appropriate arm speed. CB showed down action at 73-75 MPH. Slight velocity dip on day 3 but CB was sharper. No panic approach on the mound.
Ryan Birchard 1B / Auburn , NY / 2021Physical, solid build from chest through legs. Old fashioned hands over head delivery. Stayed around the plate over his two innings while working mostly 86-88 MPH in his first inning with a short action CB at 71-73 that did show consistent down action. Settled in at 84-86 in his second inning work and continued to command CB.
Michael Lombardi SS / Fox Lane, NY / 2022The athletic MIF was able to take on an inning for Team NY with the recent commitment of LHP Michael Kennedy (Troy HS /LSU commit). Controlled tempo with a high 3/4 arm slot. Commanded fastball to both sides of the plate at 82-83 MPH mixing a 72-73 MPH CB with 10-to-4 shape and a same plane change up at 73-74 MPH.
Jack Sullivan RHP / Carmel, NY / 2021Wiry, athletic build with late arm acceleration. Was 86-88 MPH on day one with some cut action to his FB. Breaking ball was a bit loose early on at 73-75 MPH but adjusted and threw some late tilters to his last batter. Change up showed arm side fade at 75-77 MPH. Maintained velocity on Day 3 showing more slider action to breaking ball at 74-76; kept arm speed on change up.
Left Handed Pitchers
Brian Reinke LHP / Honeoye Falls Lima, NY / 2021Physical build with strong, squared shoulders. High 3/4 arm slot with a boring, down angle fastball that features some heaviness. Curveball command suffered on day 1 but featured plus down action and bite at 72-74 MPH. Fastball worked 86-88 MPH on Day one and 86-87 on Day 3. More feel to CB with 2-to-8 shape and serious depth. Power change was shown at 81 MPH.
Xander Burch LHP / Thomas A. Edison, NY / 2021Athletic 1B/LHP with a long arm swing with some stabbing action. Was 81-83 MPH with a low 60's sweeping CB. Had an extended inning that would have been cut short without defensive miscues and a couple close pitches at the plate that didn't go his way. Breaking ball early in inning had above average spin and has the makings of an out pitch.
Itai Spinoza LHP / Fayetteville Manlius , NY / 2021Compact build for the corner left-handed hitting corner outfielder; high leg kick with a moderate arm swing from a low 3/4 slot. FB command wavered but showed life at 81-84 MPH with a 71-73 with early lateral action. Profiles as short reliever, two quality pitch arm at the next level.
