NYS Games: Team 1 Preview

 

First Base

Derek Avery 1B / C / Vestal, NY / 2020 Rankings  StateRank: 108 / POS: 5 Had a strong offensive year for Vestal HS this spring. The rangy 1B checks in at 6-foot-3 170 pounds and uses a rhythmic approach form the left side of the plate. He's added more size and strength since our last time seeing him which should show on the field.

Ryan Stowell 1B / LHP / Elmira , NY / 2019 Rankings  StateRank: 259 / POS: 15 Aggressive swings from the left side; explodes through the ball with some juice to his pull side and above average bat-speed. 6-foot-1 210 pound is an active defender around the bag as well. Will seem some time on the mound as a crafty LHP that works in the mid to upper 70's.

 

Garrett Stuckey SS / 2B / Arkport , NY / 2019 NYS Games marks our first time with Stuckey who hails from a tiny HS in the western southern tier of NY. Athletic and scrappy, the bat is compact and makes consistent contact, raw defensively with a strong arm.

Aidan Gallagher SS / RHP / Nanuet , NY / 2019 Rankings  StateRank: 150 / POS: 29 Lean lanky frame that will add more weight, fundamentally sound mechanics defensively, quick and clean transfer with a strong arm across the diamond. Short and quick to the ball with a line-drive approach.

Gabriel Perez SS / 2B / Arlington , NY / 2020 5-foot-10, 170-pounds with athleticism to his game and an endless motor. Above average arm from the middle, line-drive approach in the box with some juice, slightly raw still but tools are there.

Derek Livingston RHP / SS / Paul D. Schreiber, NY / 2020 Rankings  StateRank: 36 / POS: 11 Long Island prospect that is Lean and well built, compact bat-path in the box, active lower half defensively with a strong arm. Really projects on the mound from his over-the-top slot, sits 82-84 with an above average three pitch mix.

Third Base

Jonathan Haines 3B / RHP / Arkport , NY / 2020 Rankings  StateRank: 138 / POS: 11 Another small school prospect who hails from the western southern-tier of the state. Continues to show progress every time we see him. Has above average bat-strength from the right-side (92 mph) and an arm that's continuing to gain strength.

Christopher Mattoon RHP / 3B / Elmira , NY / 2020 NYS Games marks our first time with Mattoon who hails from Elmira, NY. Strongly built corner defender. Compact bat-path from the right-side who also pitches (78-80).

Quinn Hanafin
3B / Sayre Area (PA) / 2020

Highly aggressive at the plate with a fluid swing that produces next-level juice (94 mph). Sound defensively with a quality arm from the corner. Fun player to watch and the bat is next-level.

Outfielders

Shawn Chermak OF / RHP / Vestal , NY / 2019 Rankings  StateRank: 268 / POS: 41 Wiry build and fairly athletic. Strong arm with carry, juice to his pull-side in the box, and shows the ability to get outs on the mound (FB low 80s).

Chris McConnell OF / OF / Arlington, NY / 2019 Rankings  StateRank: 139 / POS: 19 Above average athleticism, quick bat-path with the ability to hit to all fields, some juice. Arm and defensive skills are polished, should garner plenty attention over the three days.

Joseph Ott OF / RHP / Corning , NY / 2020 Rankings  StateRank: 66 / POS: 12 Extremely raw athlete that is physically built. Arm works cleanly (82 off the mound this Feb) with signs of more velocity to come. Exciting young prospect from the Corning area.

Ryan Kerley OF / Vestal, NY / 2019 Rankings  StateRank: 278 / POS: 42 5-foot-8, 170-pounds and well build. Hits with power from the left-side, fluid bat-path with some aggresiveness. Average arm from the OF with accuracy to bags.

Matthew McHale OF / RHP / Arkport , NY / 2020 Rankings  StateRank: 25 / POS: 7 The third Arkport HS player on Team one. Lean, wiry and athletic. Above average arm (87 mph) with aggressive approach in the box with juice. Also a threat on the mound with signs of a breaking ball and a low 80's fastball.

Owen DeMember OF / RHP / Elmira, NY / 2020 Rankings  StateRank: 92 / POS: 18 Very athletic and aggressive with his approach in the box. Slightly above average tools across the board and only getting better.

 

Pitcher Only

Kyle Taborne RHP / OF / Vestal, NY / 2019 Rankings  StateRank: 58 / POS: 13 Lean and wiry build, up to 87 mph with the fastball this spring, also has one of the better spinning curveballs in the 2019 class.

Bryce Jackson RHP / 1B / Jamestown , NY / 2019 Rankings  StateRank: 130 / POS: 39 Larger frame with sound mechanics, contiunes to improve every time we see him. Low/mid 80's fastball with command of a curveball. Hails to the far west of the state and don't be surprised to see him at another level during the NYS Games.

Ian Wilbur RHP / Northeast Bradford, NY / 2020 The NYS Games will be the first time we lay eyes on Wilbur but the reports we are getting are positive. 6-foot-2, 170 with a fastball that's already in the upper 70's low 80's. Not too bad for a sophomore hidden in the southern-tier.

Joshua Harrison RHP / Vestal, NY / 2019 Another first timer to PBR, but we were fortunate to see him this spring. 5-foot-11, 165-pounds with a frame to build on. Fastball sat 83-85 mph with plenty to dream on from the Vestal HS junior.

Adam Rutkowski RHP / Maine Endwell , NY / 2019 Saw Adam once this spring on a cold dreary day. Fastball sat in the upper 70's and shows the ability to mix his pitches well, extremely confident in his curveball.
