EMERSON, Ga. - A Prep Baseball Report event that first began in 2011 is now more than a decade old. But the fun and interest received is anything but old when it comes to the Future Games.
This year’s showcase drew raves from so many in attendance watching 32 teams with players from 41 states and five Canadian provinces participating in front of approximately 350 college coaches.
“I'm not positive of the exact number of college coaches, but what stood out to me was how many schools traveled with the maximum number (3) of coaches in attendance,” related Shooter Hunt, vice president of scouting for PBR. “It is usually rare to see major head coaches out on the road, but the Future Games saw a plethora of BIG named head coaches walking around.”
What all coaches at LakePoint witnessed was spectacular - to say the least - during the four-day event.
“I think the overall median level of talent was ultra impressive,” Hunt said. “There was so much to watch on each team throughout the entire roster that I felt like I was missing more than I was seeing. It's what makes the Future Games so special: there is something for every coach to watch for on each team. The staffs that brought multiple coaches were rewarded best because they were likely able to see the most.”
Jordan Chiero, PBR Ohio Director of Scouting, had a lot of great things to say about this year’s event.
“The atmosphere was unbelievable,” Chiero said. “You have 70 to 100 scouts at each game, playing the top talent in the country, and getting a chance to represent our state never gets old.
“Also, the coverage from each state was unbelievable, but more specifically our state blew me away. Between Stef, Eric, Bruce and Dylan our crew goes over and beyond on the coverage side - nothing that Team Ohio does goes undocumented.”
One major change made this year was with the schedules, each team playing different opponents from previous years at the Future Games.
“I LOVED the new schedule, and I think that it helped rejuvenate the kids and staff after a long summer of playing against the same regional talent,” pointed out Hunt. “It was especially evident when the Ohio boys took on Florida. Ohio played like it had something to prove, and with a plethora of SEC and ACC coaches watching, I thought that they made the most of that big stage.”
Ohio pounded out 13 hits in an 11-3 win over Florida in the opener, lost 7-6 to Massachusetts in game two, then defeated Mid-Atlantic in the finale on Saturday.
“I think there are pros and cons to it but overall our guys really enjoyed getting to play against states from all over the country,” Chiero said. “The undeniable benefit is our guys got a chance to play in front of scouts in those areas they wouldn't have if we had the traditional setup.”
Chiero was excited about the performance Team Ohio put on.
“I couldn’t be more proud of the way our guys played,” Chiero related. “Obviously this isn’t about winning, but going 2-1 and being a half inning from 3-0 was a statement from our guys that the talent in Ohio can match up with any state in the country and college coaches have noticed. My phone hasn't stopped ringing since we left.”
There was more that stood out to Chiero about 2022 Team Ohio.
“Not only was this one of the more successful teams we’ve had on the field, but I think this was the best dugout we’ve ever had,” Chiero explained. “Each one of these kids isn’t only a great player but a great human being. The team chemistry was elite from the very first pitch. It felt like this was a team that had been together for years. I’d sign up to coach them any day.”
Hunt saw a lot to like in the team from the Buckeye state.
“During each of Ohio's games, I walked into the dugout to tell Jordan that he had sandbagged me about their roster,” Hunt said. “He was very modest leading up to the event, but every time the team played there were LOUD noises coming off the bat.”
Ohio also showed well in the Junior Future Games.
“In my opinion, this Junior Future Games team rivals the 2022 grad class team we brought up a few years back as the most talented Junior Future Games team we’ve ever had,” Chiero said. “That 2022 grad team had double-digit D-1 guys before it’s all said and done and I think this year's 2026 team has the opportunity to match that. Several 2026s have already received offers and I’d say 50 percent of that roster has phone calls lined up with D-1 schools.”
Hunt feels strongly that those participating, no matter the level, are more than worthy of being part of such a prestigious event.
“Every player at the Future Games has been evaluated by the PBR staff, so their presence alone means that they have next-level talent,” explained Hunt. “Many players had strong, breakout weeks, but even the guys who didn't see in-game success are still likely very much on college coaches' radars. I think it is important for those kids who didn't think that they performed well to understand that it was only four days, and college coaches are evaluating much more than whether or not they produced in that short window.”
A PBR thank you to all that participated and a special thanks to the players on Team Ohio that gave their thoughts about the event (including what schools have been in contact with them since the event):
