Wichita Winter Open Showcase: Catchers Analysis

Prep Baseball Report Kansas held the Wichita Winter Open Showcase at Hoover Field in Wichata, Kansas.  Nearly fourty players participated in the 2022 to 2019 classes from around the area.

Player profiles have been updated with running times and velocities along with a video of their performance.

Players can now updated their profiles with a 
ProspectPlus subscription, while scouts and recruiters can add players on ScoutPlus.

Here is a closer look at the catchers from the event, listed in alphabetical order.



Catchers

Daniel Bebee C / SS / Shawnee Mission South, KS / 2020

Bebee has a strong build and athletic frame at 6-foot-2, 190-pounds. At the event he ran a 7.26 60 and posted an exit velocity of 89 mph, one of the tops recorded. During hitting evaluations, Bebee starts with an open stance, knee pinch into his load, in line stride, showed feel for the barrel, extension through the baseball, high finish with hands, pop to left field during batting practice. Defensively behind the plate, Bebee showed good actions, quick three-quarter arm action, pop times between 1.89 and 1.97 seconds (top times recorded at event), mostly accurate throws, strong arm with carry and positional velo of 79 mph.

Shon-Claude Boothe C / OF / Mangum, OK / 2019

Boothe is a big bodied 6-foot-1, 224-pound right-handed hitting catching prospect in Oklahoma’s 2019 recruiting class. At the event, he ran a 7.46 60 and posted an exit velocity of 92 mph, tied for highest recorded at the event. During hitting evaluations, Boothe starts slightly opened, slight knee pinch into load, quiet hands, in line stride, high finish with hands, showed pop to his pull side during batting practice. Behind the plate, he showed clean transfers, quiet hands, over the top arm slot, positional velo of 70 mph, mostly accurate throws, pop times between 2.28 and 2.35 seconds.

Bret Brownlee C / SS / Veritas Christian , KS / 2022

Brownlee is a 5-foot-10, 140-pound right-handed hitting catcher in Kansas’ 2022 recruiting class. He ran a 7.78 60 and posted an exit velocity of 78 mph. During hitting evaluations, Brownlee showed contact to mostly the middle and his pull side, starts in a more upright position with a narrow stance, strides slightly across his body, compact swing, quick bat, high finish with hands. Behind the plate, he showed clean transfers, momentum towards 2B, high three-quarter release, positional velo of 69 mph, mostly accurate throws, pop times between 2.37 and 2.63 seconds.

Mitchael Casement C / 3B / Maize, KS / 2021

Casement is a 5-foot-10, 175-pound catching and right-handed hitting catching prospect in Kansas’ 2021 class. At the event, he ran an 8.26 60 yard dash and posted an exit velocity of 84 mph. During hitting evaluations, Casement showed contact to the middle of the field, starts with an athletic base, minimal load, some rhythm with hands, in line stride, remains balanced throughout. Defensively behind the plate, starts in an athletic position, clean transfers, over the top arm slot, over the top arm slot, positional velo of 72 mph, pop times between 2.08 and 2.28 seconds, mostly accurate throws.

Joseph Lopez C / OF / Bishop Miege, KS / 2021

Lopez is a 5-foot-11, 140-pound left-handed hitting catcher in Kansas’ 2021 class. At the event, he ran a 7.60 60 and posted an exit velocity of 82 mph. During hitting evaluations, Lopez shows an athletic set up, in line stride, some rhythm with hands, quick bat, level bat path, solid approach to the middle of the field. Defensively behind the plate, he has a balanced set up, clean transfers, over the top arm slot, mostly accurate throws, positional velo of 70 mph, pop times between 2.08 and 2.21 seconds.

Devon Nicholson C / 3B / Maize, KS / 2020

Nicholson is a 5-foot-9, 180-pound right-handed hitting catcher in Kansas’ 2020 recruiting class out of Maize HS. He ran a 7.71 60 and posted an exit velocity of 82 mph. During hitting evaluations, Nicholson starts in an athletic stance, lifts front heel to get into his load, minimal head movement, slightly across body with stride, remains balanced throughout. Behind the plate, Nicholson has an athletic set up, clean transfers, over the top arm slot, positional velo of 74 mph, fairly accurate throws, pop times between 2.14 and 2.34 seconds.

Gaige Oakley 1B / C / Wichita Heights, KS / 2022

Oakley is a big bodied 6-foot-3, 257-pound switch hitting catcher  pitcher in Kansas’ 2022 class. He ran a 8.90 60 and posted an exit velocity of 77 mph from the right side and 74 mph from the left side. During batting practice, Oakley has an upright stance, in line stride, short swing, hands to the baseball, contact to pull side. From the right side, open stance, weight shift into load, smooth stroke, pull side contact. Behind the plate, Oakley showed clean transfers, low three-quarter arm slot, positional velo of 65 mph, mostly accurate throws, pop times between 2.43 and 2.59 seconds

Joe Patton C / OF / St. Thomas Aquinas, KS / 2021

Patton is a lanky 6-foot, 150-pound left-handed hitting catcher in Kansas’ 2021 class. He ran a 7.78 60 and posted an exit velocity of 82 mph. At the plate, Patton starts with a wider stance, loose hands, quick bat, leverages up front side, controls the barrel, showed hard contact throughout his round of batting practice. Behind the plate, Patton has quick feet, showed clean transfers, high three-quarter arm slot, longer arm action, positional velo of 74 mph, pop times between 2.06 and 2.26 seconds, accurate throws.

Spencer Whitfield C / 1B / McPherson, KS / 2020

Whitfield is a 6-foot, 200-pound switch hitting catcher in Kansas’ 2020 class. At the event he ran a 7.90 60 and posted an exit velocity of 82 mph. During hitting evaluations Whitfield showed the ability to hit from both sides of the plate. From the left side Whitefield is slightly across his body with his stride, balanced body, lift, high finish with hands, while from the right side he has an in line stride, quicker bat, some rhythm with hands and drove the ball to left field during batting practice. Behind the plate, fluid foot work, clean transfers, over the top arm slot, positional velo of 70 mph, mostly accurate throws, pop times between 2.00 and 2.34 seconds.

Andrew Wisner RHP / C / Eisenhower , KS / 2019

Wisner is a strong bodied 6-foot, 180-pound catcher in Kansas’ 2019 class.  He ran a 7.76 60 and posted an exit velocity of 78 mph at the event. During hitting evaluations, starts in an athletic stance, quiet load, some rhythm with hands, slightly across body with stride, level bat path, showed some pull pop with a good round of batting practice. Behind the plate, crouched set up, fluid footwork, clean transfers, over the top arm slot, positional velo of 71 mph with some carry, mostly accurate throws, pop times between 2.06 and 2.18 seconds.
