2023 Ontario New Year Open: Quick Hits III
February 22, 2023
We would like to thank all who participated in PBR Ontario's New Year Open. This was a great opportunity for players to get in front of our staff before teams begin heading to Florida in March for live action outdoors. The event, and all open events, serve as identifiers for PBR Canada Selects rosters that attend national and regional PBR events such as the Future and Jr. Future Games, West Coast Games, NorthEast Senior Games and New York State Games.
Many players impressed during their individual workouts at the showcase. Below we continue our post-event coverage with another set of Quick Hits, highlighting five more standouts from the event.

Lucas Trivedi 1B / 3B / Bill Crothers Secondary School, ON / 2024Trivedi stood out as one of the more physical hitters in the box at the Ontario New Year Open with a 6-foot-3, 225-pound frame. Uses a leg kick for timing, he gets his hands in a powerful launch position. He caught some loud barrels to his pull-side with a max EV of 96.1 mph and a 336ft max distance. The bat will be the carrying tool at the next level.

Preston Vieira C / OF / Maxwell Heights, ON / 2024Rankings StateRank: 71 / POS: 8
Vieira continues to bring a mature approach to his game every time out. A strong 5-foot-10, 170-pound frame always seems to have a knack for the barrel with some loud contact to his pull-side. When he gets the ball in the air, it has carry (333 ft) and shows some juice (93.4 max EV). Behind the dish, he has gotten a lot quicker with his transfer and had a 2.00-2.12 pop time with a 74 mph C velo. Vieira would be an easy pickup behind the dish for colleges down south.

Sam Kim C / Centennial CVI, ON / 2026Rankings StateRank: 21 / POS: 4
Kim is one of the better catcher’s in the 2026 class and he continued to show why today. He started his day off behind the dish with quick feet/transfer that resulted in a 1.97-2.13 pop time and a 73 mph C velo. In the box, he worked up the middle & to his backside gap with a max EV of 87.7 mph. He also ran one of the top 60’s on the day (6.9 sec), Kim had his tools on display yesterday and will be a strong follow this summer.

Jackson Long OF / RHP / Bishop Macdonell , ON / 2025Rankings StateRank: 69 / POS: 14
Long was one of the more intriguing arms that threw this past weekend. The projectable 6-foot-4, 178-pound frame immediately stands out on the mound sitting 82-83 mph while flashing a good looking CH that showed some fade (12.9 HB). In the box, he finished with a top EV of 91,5 mph and 295 ft max distance. As he continues to fill out his long/lengthy frame, his number will only trend upwards.
|
Avery Belgrave OF / OF / St. Thomas More, ON / 2025Rankings StateRank: 52 / POS: 9
Belgrave was one of the more athletic players that showed out at the Ontario New Year Open. In the box, the swing is still raw, but he generates easy juice with an approach that works to the big part of the field. He finished his round with a 91.1 mph EV and 318 max distance, as well as running one of the best 60-times (6.69).

Allon Seepersaud RHP / C / R S McLaughlin Collegiate and Vocational, ON / 2024Seepersaud, 6-foot-1, 180-pounds, was one of the better arms we had today at the Ontario New Year Open. The FB sat low 8’s topping out at 85.7 with a long, whippy arm action. Gets down the mound quickly and is around the zone. His CH worked with heavy fade (17.2 HB avg) and will be a go-to pitch for him this upcoming season. This has been the best we’ve seen from Seepersaud as his trend on the mound continues to go up.
