PBR Spring Training: Day Two Quick Hits II
March 12, 2023
PBR Canada Spring Training got underway on Saturday with teams getting their first outdoor practices under their belts at Launch Pad Sports Complex in Cocoa, Florida.
Day Two shifted to some live-game action, along with more practices as we look ahead to Scout Day on Day Three.
We had full staff on hand from Canada and Florida with five active fields filled with 230+ Canadian prospects. We had 8 total games played on Sunday among eight different Canadian squads from the Ontario Giants, NRS Academy, Canes Canada, Whitby Canadians, Etobicoke Rangers, Ontario Prospects and PBR Canada Selects.
Below, we break down seven more of the top prospects and standout performers we saw on the first day of live-game action in Cocoa, Florida with our second set of Day Two Quick Hits.
Marko Lashkiv SS / RHP / Richview Collegiate Institute , ON / 2023
Rankings StateRank: 23 / POS: 5
Lashkiv was one of the standouts on the 17U Etobicoke Rangers squad. At the plate, he barreled multiple balls to his pull-side, one being a double in the gap in his first AB. Up the middle, he turned multiple double plays at 2B with proper footwork and hands that work. Although the upside is on the mound, he showed well as a positional player today.

Ryan McGivney RHP / C / Sinclair, ON / 2025
Rankings StateRank: 41 / POS: 14
McGivney, standing at 5-foot-11, 180-pounds, was one of the better arms we saw on Day Two of Spring Training. He sat comfortably 81-83 mph (T85). Has a quick arm, out of a low ¾ slot with an easy, repeatable delivery. Flashed a breaking ball, a slider with some sweep to it, and it plays well off his fastball coming out of a similar arm slot. When filling up the zone, it’s tough for hitters to barrel him up.
|
Ko Abe RHP / 3B / Leaside, ON / 2026
Rankings StateRank: 14 / POS: 5
The young right-handed hitter is a lean 6-foot, 140-pound body who had himself a solid day down here in Cocoa. Displaying an ability to keep his hands back and finding the barrel during his contact. On the defensive end, Ko had clean footwork with the ability to display strong baseball intelligence during relays and situational plays. A player we are looking forward to see on the mound later this week as well, after a strong appearance last fall at the Ontario Prospects Scout Day.
|
Alex Landry RHP / OF / Bill Crothers, ON / 2026
Rankings StateRank: 13 / POS: 4
Landry was one of the more exciting, high upside arms we saw on Day 2 of Spring Training. The ‘27 eligible RHP touched 81 mph while comfortably sitting 78-80. The CB has depth that generates lots of S/M out of a ¾ arm slot. His quick arm creates life out of his hand that makes it tough on hitters to time him up. After a good first look today, he’ll be an intriguing follow as he continues to mature and add strength.

Phillip Ledgister C / OF / Holy Spirit , NL / 2024Ledgister looked comfortable in the box today with an aggressive approach hunting fastballs early in counts. He crushed a FB over the right-fielder's head for a standup double. Also a steady defensive catcher, Ledgister will be one of the more consistent catchers over the next week.
|
Trentin Kooy OF / RHP / Marion Graham Collegiate, SK / 2026Good first showing on Sunday from 2026 OF/RHP Trentin Kooy. A 5-foot-9, 167-pound outfielder with good reads off contact, who has showcased an ability to route run. However his bat is nothing to overlook, with simple movements in his swing he was able to create contact with the barrel consistently as shown below. Looked comfortable in the batter’s box in each appearance, displaying a disciplined approach amongst peers going 1-2 with a walk and a pair of stolen bases.
|
Tye Carrier C / RHP / Lethbridge Collegiate Institute , AB / 2024Carrier, 6-foot, 155-pounds, was the spark plug at the top of the Canes Canada lineup. Stayed within himself at the plate with a line-drive approach to the big part of the park. A standout at the Alberta New Year Open, he continued his strong showing in the box today.
