WV Top Prospect Games Analysis: Red Team

The summer rush of PBR events in Pennsylvania and West Virginia came to a close with the 2nd Annual WV Top Prospect Games on August 8 and 9. Prospects from four states assembled at the YMCA Kennedy Center Field in Huntington, WV for two days of nine inning games and showcase activities. Today we continue our analysis of the prospects in attendance by taking a look at the prospects that participated as a member of the Red Team.

Hunter TreeceHunter Treece, RHP/OF, (Pine-Richland HS, PA), Class of 2017

Treece is a 5-foot-10, 165-pound two-way prospect that showcased a well-rounded skill set over two days. The right-hander sat 81-82, topping at 83 mph out of a high 3/4 arm slot while recording four strikeouts in three scoreless innings of work. Treece also displayed solid command of a 69 mph curveball with 11/5 rotation and a 73 mph changeup thrown at fastball arm speed. 

The right-handed hitter displayed an 88 mph bat exit velocity from a square stance with a leg lift stride. Treece went 3-for-5 with a double in game action and ran a 7.08 60-yard dash. The junior also flashed the top outfield arm among all prospects at the event at 85 mph.

Dylan Appolloni, RHP, (Bishop Watterson HS, OH), Class of 2017

Appolloni sat 81-83 from a high 3/4 arm slot recording six strikeouts in three inning of work. the 6-foot, 160-pound right-hander also displayed a 75 mph curveball with 11/5 rotation and a 71 mph changeup thrown at near fastball arm speed. Appolloni has a tendency to fall off his mid-line at times affecting his command against right-handed hitters. Continued physical maturation and a tweak in mechanics should lead to additional velocity spikes in coming years.

Tyler Ault, OF, (Hampshire HS, WV), Class of 2017

Ault is a 5-foot-9, 135-pound right-handed hitter that starts from a square stance. The junior showcased a line drive approach with a lift-and-replace stride that leads to a 74 mph bat exit velocity. Ault went 2-for-5 at the plate in game action and ran a 7.33 60-yard dash. He showed capable actions defensively with an accurate 79 mph arm. Continued physical development and strength gains should continue to help his game progress.

Trevor Barnes, 1B/LHP, (IMG Academy, FL), Class of 2017

Barnes flashed a 76 mph bat exit velocity and a flat barrel path from a square stance with a feel for the barrel. The 6-foot-2, 215-pound two-way prospect sat 71-72 off the mound and displayed a curveball at 62 mph with 1/7 rotation. Barnes showed a soft glove hand around the bag at first base and an accurate 65 mph arm across the diamond.

Benjamin Bartilson, C/OF (Winfield HS, WV), Class of 2018

Bartilson displayed solid receiving skills and pop times of 2.28-2.42 on throws of 65 mph from the crouch. The 5-foot-9, 145-pound backstop ran a 7.87 60-yard dash and registered a 74 mph bat exit velocity. The right-handed hitter starts from a square stance and utilizes a heel raise stride to initiate his swing. Continued physical maturity and strength gains, along with an adjustment to a slight arm bar in his swing, will benefit Bartilson offensively moving forward.

Jared Bumpus, LHP/1B, (Ripley HS, WV), Class of 2016

Bumpus sat 70-72 out of a 3/4 arm slot during two innings of work. The 6-foot, 180-pound lefty also displayed a 58 mph curveball with 1/7 rotation, a drop down slider at 63 mph and a changeup at 65 mph. Bumpus ran a 7.62 60-yard dash and flashed an 84 mph bat exit velocity. He showed a capable glove hand around the bag at first base and an accurate 68 mph arm across the diamond. Bumpus went 1-for-5 at the plate in game action, with a triple and two RBI.

Anthony Carfagna, MIF, (Riverside HS, WV), Class of 2017

Carfagna went 2-for-5 with a double and three RBI during game action. The 5-foot-11, 145-pound right-handed hitter starts from a square stance and utilizes a heel raise stride. Carfagna displayed good rhythm to his swing and a bat exit velocity of 79 mph. The junior showed solid foot speed (7.09 60-yard dash) but will need to continue to develop his 72 mph arm to remain on the left side of the infield at the next level.

Connor Frye, MIF, (Ritchey County HS, WV), Class of 2018

Frye starts from a square stance and utilizes a short stride to generate a bat exit velocity of 69 mph. The 5-foot-5, 125-pound left-handed hitter went 1-for-5 in game action and ran a 7.65 60-yard dash. Frye displayed defensive skills best suited for a second baseman with a 70 mph arm across the diamond. Continued physical maturation and strength gains will benefit Frye in his development moving forward.

Brandon Chandler, RHP/2B, (Woodrow Wilson HS, WV), Class of 2016

Chandler sat sat 81-82 out of a high 3/4 arm slot with striking out four in two innings of work. The 5-foot-11, 165-pound righty also commanded a 75 mph curveball with 11/5 rotation. The two-way prospect showcased a 77 mph arm across the diamond and ran a 7.87 60-yard dash. The right-handed hitter showed quick hands from a square stance with a bat exit velocity of 82 mph. Chandler went 2-for-5 with a double and a run scored at the plate in game action.

Drew Hefner, C/3B, (Bridgeport HS, WV), Class of 2017

Hefner displayed advanced catch and throw skills behind the plate. The 5-foot-8, 175-pound backstop showcased pop times of 2.00-2.08 on throws of 75 mph from the crouch. The left-handed hitter starts from a slightly open stance and utilizes a leg lift stride to initiate his swing. Hefner registered an 80 mph bat exit velocity and showed a direct swing path with a feel for the barrel in batting practice. 

Zachary Lively, MIF/OF, (South Charleston HS, WV), Class of 2016

Lively is a 6-foot-1, 160-pound right-handed hitter that initiates his swing with a heel raise stride. He displayed a bat exit velocity of 75 mph and went 2-for-5 during game action. Lively ran a 7.44 60-yard dash and showed a 65 mph arm across the diamond. Improved footwork and arm strength will be necessary to be considered a prospect as a middle infielder.

Zack O'Brien, OF, (Oak Glen HS, WV), Class of 2016

O'Brien is a 5-foot-9, 165-pound right-handed hitter that starts from a wide, crouched stance and initiates his swing with no stride. The uncommitted senior would generate better barrel whip if he worked to fully engage his lower half. O'Brien registered an 83 mph bat exit velocity and showcased a 7.27 60-yard dash. Further development of his accurate 73 mph arm from the outfield will be necessary moving forward.

Josh Petit, MIF, (George Washington HS, WV), Class of 2017

Petit has a projectable 6-foot-2, 185-pound frame and ran a 7.25 60-yard dash. The left-handed hitter starts from a wide, square stance and displayed good rhythm and the ability to stay inside the baseball during a solid round of batting practice. Petit went 1-for-5 in game action while barreling the baseball in each trip with a bat exit velocity of 77 mph. The junior showcased a soft glove hand and good footwork defensively with a 77 mph arm across the diamond. His size and foot speed will likely dictate a move to a corner infield position at the next level.

Jared Shawver, LHP/OF, (Logan HS, WV), Class of 2016

Shawver sat 77-79 from a 3/4 arm slot during two innings of work on the mound. The 6-foot, 155-pound two-way prospect also showcased a 65 mph curveball with 1/7 rotation. Shawver ran a 7.59 60-yard dash and displayed an accurate 82 mph arm from the outfield. The left-handed hitter displayed a feel for the barrel out of a square stance with a bat exit velocity of 78 mph. Shawver showed a short swing path with a short stride to consistently barrel the baseball during his round of batting practice.

Josh Stegmaier, RHP/3B, (Morgantown HS, WV), Class of 2016

Stegmaier is a solidly built, 5-foot-11, 185-pound two-way prospect. The primary pitcher sat 79-81 out of a high 3/4 arm slot during his time on the mound. Stegmaier also showed a 71 mph curveball with 11/5 rotation and a 65 mph changeup thrown at near fastball arm speed. The right-handed hitter starts from a square stance with a high hands load and incorporates a heel raise stride to initiate his swing. Stegmaier went 1-for-5 with a double in game action and registered an 83 mph bat exit velocity. The uncommitted senior showed good feet and a soft glove hand at third base with an accurate 80 mph arm across the diamond.

Sam Wilson, RHP, (Dublin Jerome HS, OH), Class of 2017

Wilson worked three solid innings facing one batter over the minimum while striking out five. The 6-foot-1, 170-pound right-hander sat 81-83 out of a high 3/4 arm slot with a loose arm action and some hip coil to his delivery. Wilson also flashed a 71 mph curveball with sharp 11/5 break and a slider at 74 mph in his arsenal. His athletic frame and long levers indicate additional velocity spikes are likely moving forward.
