Western PA Top Prospect Games Analysis: White Team

The schedule of PBR events in Pennsylvania began this week with the 2019 Western PA Top Prospect Games on June 11th and 12th. Prospects gathered for two days of games and showcase activities at the Seton Hill baseball complex on the campus of Seton Hill University. Today we conclude our analysis of the prospects in attendance by taking a look at those that participated as a member of the Black Team.

Top Prospects

David Duffalo, 2020, C/OF, Slippery Rock HS (PA)
5-foot-8, 185-pound right-handed hitter starts from a square stance and initiates his swing with a simple heel-raise stride. Displayed a strong lower half and a feel for the barrel while drive baseballs to all fields in batting practice. Showcased his gap power in game action going a combined 5-for-9 with three doubles and a triple over two days. Duffalo was a home run shy of hitting for the cycle on day two of the event. Registered an 84 mph bat exit velocity and ran a 7.47 60-yard dash. Solid defender flashed pop times of 2.18-2.25 on throws of 74 mph from the crouch.

Aidan Shephard, 2020, OF, Norwin HS (PA)
6-foot-4, 195-pound physical prospect showcased a well-rounded skill set in all phases of the game. The right-handed hitter starts from a square stance and initiates his swing with a heel raise stride. Showed balance and athleticism throughout swing with the ability to drive the ball to all fields. Registered an 89 mph bat exit velocity and ran a 7.03 60-yard dash. Went 3-for-8 in game action over two days including an opposite field triple to the right field wall. The left-handed thrower also showcased athletic defensive actions with advanced 90 mph arm strength from the outfield.

Anthony Sherwin, 2020, SS/3B, Penn-Trafford HS (PA)
5-foot-11, 170-pounder only participated on the first day of the event, but showed well in all phases of the game. A 7.13 runner, Sherwin displayed soft hands and active feet with an ability to play multiple infield positions with solid carry on throws of 80 mph across the diamond. The left-handed hitter starts from a square stance and initiates his hands from a high load with a simple, heel raise stride. Made consistent hard contact in batting practice while showing an ability to use all fields. Registered a bat exit velocity of 91 mph. Went 1-for-4 with a stolen base and run scored in game action.

Ryan Verbonitz, 2021, C/1B, Hazleton Area HS (PA)
5-foot-9, 185-pound switch-hitter showcased similar swings from both sides of the plate in batting practice. A wide, square stance with a heel raise stride and a middle of the field approach led to consistent solid contact from both sides in batting practice. Registered an 86 mph bat exit velocity and went 4-for-4 with a double, with two hits from each side of the plate, on day one. Above average defender behind the dish was impressive in game action funneling the baseball to the plate and creating a soft wall when blocking. Threw out only runner attempting to steal and flashed pop times of 2.07-2.14 on throws of 74 mph from the crouch during evaluations.

Gabe Watts, 2021, LHP, Johnsonburg Area HS (PA)
6-foot-3, 180-pound lefty was the most interesting pitching prospect of the event. Watts sat 81-83 with some cut to his fastball out of a 3/4 arm slot for three solid innings. Repeats up tempo delivery well out of a side rocker step with balance throughout. Also showcased a curveball with short, tight 1/7 break at 69-71. Commanded both sides of the plate and worked ahead consistently. Did not allow a hit or run over three innings while striking out five. Long, projectable frame should see velocity spikes over the next several years.

Adam Crawford, 2021, OF/LHP, West Allegheny HS (PA)
6-foot-1, 175-pound left-handed hitter starts from a square stance and utilizes a lift-and-replace stride to initiate his swing. Gets on plane early and stays in the hitting zone for an extended period of time. Showcased an above average feel for the barrel with a bat exit velocity of 82 mph. Went 5-for-9 in game action over two days and ran a 6.96 60-yard dash. Moves well defensively while playing through the baseball routinely. Displayed solid carry on throws of 80 mph from the outfield. Two-way prospect sat 75-79 with some cut action to his fastball out of a 3/4 arm slot with a balanced, repeatable delivery. Also showed feel for a 1/7 breaking curveball at 63-66 and a changeup that sat 70-73 at near fastball arm speed.

Marcus Danchision, 2021, RHP/SS, MMI Prep (PA)
6-foot-2, 165-pound two-way prospect sat 79-81 out of a high 3/4 arm slot with consistent arm-side run to his fastball. Long limbed, loose delivery projects for velocity spikes moving forward. Also showcased a short breaking curveball with slider break at 70-72 and command of his changeup at 70-72. Allowed one run over three innings of work while striking out two batters. The right-handed hitter starts from a square stance and initiates his swing with a lift-and-replace stride. Displayed a feel for the barrel and a middle of the field approach with a bat exit velocity of 84 mph. Went 4-for-9 in game action and ran a 7.31 60-yard dash. Showcased a soft glove hand defensively with accurate 72 mph arm strength across the diamond.

Cameron DePalma, 2020, LHP, Penn-Trafford HS (PA)
6-foot, 155-pound primary pitcher sat 76-78 from a high 3/4 arm slot with some cut to his fastball. Repeats delivery well with balance and a quick arm action. Curveball showed tight 1/7 rotation at 67-70. Also displayed a changeup at near fastball arm speed at 65-66. Worked three innings allowing three runs while striking out four.

Joe Dolansky, 2020, RHP, Cathedral Prep (PA)
6-foot-2, 215-pound primary pitcher with a projectable frame. Sat 77-79 out of a high 3/4 arm slot with some cut action to his fastball. Repeats delivery consistently with balance throughout. Curveball with 11/5 rotation at 67-70 tends to roll out of the hand. Showed above average arm speed on a changeup at 70-72 that he commanded for strikes. Worked three innings with one strikeout in game action.

Jace Miner, 2021, LHP/OF, Brookville HS (PA)
6-foot-2, 160-pound two-way prospect sat 76-80 out of a 3/4 arm slot during three scoreless innings of work in game action. Allowed three hits while striking out two. Also commanded a curveball with 1/7 rotation at 61-63 and a changeup with good sell at 69-70. The left-handed hitter starts from a square, crouched stance and initiates his swing with a lift-and-replace stride. Displayed a flat barrel path with a line drive approach and registered an 85 mph bat exit velocity. Went 3-for-9 in game action over two days and ran a 7.27 60-yard dash. Showcased accurate 85 mph arm strength from the outfield during defensive evaluations. 

Jackson Miller, 2020, RHP/3B, Albert Gallatin HS (PA)
6-foot-2, 155-pound two-way prospect impressed on the mound with a easy, repeatable delivery that projects for velocity gains in the near future. Sat 80-82 out of a high 3/4 arm slot with a short takeaway. Curveball has tight, late 11/5 action at 70-71. A knuckle ball at 71-73 is currently used as his changeup. Worked three innings in game action allowing one run while striking out two. The right-handed hitter starts from a square stance and initiates his swing with a lift-and-replace stride. Showed a middle of the field approach with solid barrel awareness. Went 2-for-9 with a double in game action over two days and ran a 7.91 60-yard dash. Displayed active feet and played through the baseball routinely at third base with solid carry on throws of 78 mph across the diamond.

Domenic Pearson, 2020, 3B, Thomas Jefferson HS (PA)
5-foot-10, 175-pound right-handed hitter starts from a slightly open stance and utilizes a leg-hang stride to begin. Showed a handsy approach with solid bat to ball skills. Registered a 79 mph bat exit velocity and ran a 7.51 60-yard dash. Flashed athletic defensive actions at third base with active feet and 79 mph arm strength across the diamond.  

Scott Renk, 2022, 1B/RHP, Spring-Ford HS (PA)
6-foot-5, 230-pound right-handed hitter starts from a square stance and utilizes a lift-and-replace stride to begin. Showcased a strong lower half with some loop to his swing. Creates backspin with a pull oriented swing at this point in his development. Registered a bat exit velocity of 84 mph and went 2-for-8 in game action over two days, including a double off the left field wall. Displayed developing skills around the bag at first base with accurate 73 mph arm strength across the diamond. The righty sat 69-73 on the mound out of a high 3/4 arm slot. Also showed a curveball at 62-64 with cutter like action.

Ethan Wells, 2022, C/SS, Johnsonburg Area HS (PA)
6-foot, 155-pound right-handed hitter starts from a slightly open stance and initiates his swing from a leg-hang stride. Registered a bat exit velocity of 75 mph and ran a 7.70 60-yard dash. Showcased pop times of 2.25-2.35 defensively on throws of 71 mph from the crouch. Solid skill set will continue to develop through strength gains and physical maturity.
