Super 60: FlightScope Offensive Leaderboard

The Super 60 Pro Showcase took place on Sunday, February 4 at the MAX-McCook Athletic & Exposition Center in McCook, IL. This event featured 70 of the top 2018 high school draft prospects in PBR's nearly 40 state coverage area. As part of PBR's comprehensive coverage of amateur baseball, all the action was captured using a FlightScope Strike unit. Today, we present to you a snippet of the offensive data collected, including leaderboards on: Exit Velocity and Carry.
TOP exit velocity
Exit velocity tells us how hard a ball comes off a prospect's bat, or in other words, it can tell us the amount of strength and power a prospect possesses. It should come as no surprise that many of the spots on this leaderboard are held by your larger, more physical prospects, although not all. Prospects like Zaid Walker, Cam McMillan, Dakota Kotowski, and Jeff Holtz, to name a few, are expected to be able to put a charge in the ball. Simply by looking at the physical measurements of these prospects you get the idea that they are power hitters. Their exit velocities back this up as well. Walker flashed power, as his 109.22 mph exit velocity was an event-best during the batting practice session. Then there are the guys who will not blow you away on paper with their physical measurements, but are able to generate equal amounts of power. Prospects like Jarred Kelenic, Gavin Dugas, Charles Mack, and Matthew Hogan would fall into this category. They do not possess the build of a Kotowski (6-foot-5, 230 pounds) or Holtz (6-foot-4, 226-pound). Instead they stand between 5-foot-11 and 6-foot, weighing approximately 200-pounds, and still pack a punch. Being able to repeat is a huge factor. McMillan put up the most consistent high exit velocity numbers out of any prospect, followed by Charles Mack and Alex Binelas. To a lesser degree Dugas, Holtz, and Kelenic were able to repeat for high numbers. Kotowski and Hogan both possess a lot of strength as you can tell from the leaderboard, their challenge moving forward will be using that strength consistently.

TOP carry
One might suspect that the balls that carried the furthest were also the ones that came off the bat with the highest exit velocity. In some cases this may be true, but in others, a combination of exit velocity and vertical launch angle will dictate carry. The "sweet spot" vertical launch angle for a long ball is anywhere from 25-to-35 degrees. Anything above that is a pop-up, the 10-to-25 degree range produces line drives and anything below 10 and into the negatives will produce a ground ball. The carry numbers presented here were produced with launch angles between 16 and 42 degrees. 11 of the launch angles fall into the "sweet spot" category, while 11 would be classified as line drives and two as pop-ups. Dakota Kotowski holds the top two spots with two 393 foot bombs, and he did it with two very different launch angles. The 393.04 foot shot was produced with a 32 degree launch angle (sweet spot) and 102.74 exit velocity. His 392.9 foot effort left the bat at an angle of 23 degrees (line drive), but with an exit velocity of 106.07 mph. So he had to apply a greater exit velcoity at a lower angle in order to have the ball travel just as far. Charles Mack's 388.2 foot hit left his bat at an angle of 19.14 degrees with a 105.02 mph exit velocity. Mack, along with Jared Kelenic, consisntely hammered baseballs in that line drive zone. Gavin Dugas on the otherhand was launching baseballs with a launch angle in that "sweet spot". Circling back to Kotowski, he was able to carry baseballs from every launch angle. His name appears five times on this list, of the five, two were line drives, one in the "sweet spot", and the final two were above the "sweet spot" (42.5 and 37.12 degrees). The ball he hit 367.31 feet was hit with lowest launch angle on the cary leaderboard at 16.61 degree, while his 42.53 degree launch angle was the most extreme.
