USA CNT: Gourson has had two strong seasons in Westwood. Due to the presence of lots of other infield options on the CNT, after a strong offensive showing during training camp, Gourson was limited to just 13 at-bats during the 10 games against Chinese Taipei and Japan, going 2-for-13. He has a patient, polished approach at the plate with a simple, compact swing that produces solid pop to all fields and has shown a knack for hitting high velocity. A good but not excellent athlete, though he has experience at second base, shortstop and third base, he profiles most naturally at second base at the next level, but in order to maximize his ability there, he’ll have to work on his pivot at the second base bag.
2021 Point Loma shortstop Ethan “Deuce” Gourson is listed at 6-foot 175-pounds and is committed to the University of Arizona. Athletic build with room for growth. Passed the eye test during infield outfield with a strong skill set and slick throwing motion. Displayed above-average lateral quickness and good footwork. Showed some inconsistency with his defense when made two errors in the game on routine plays, the first being a lazy throw and the second being a mishandled potential double-play. He then made two plus defensive plays that showed range, footwork and arm strength needed at the college and professional levels. Average runner with potential for more speed with proper technique training and maturity. Bats left-handed and second in the order, sets up with his feet inline and slightly larger than shoulder width apart, loads with a moderate leg kick, brings his hands low before whipping the barrel through the zone showing good back leg drive. Hammered a fastball to deep center field for a double after battling off-speed pitches. Aggressive at the plate and at times seemed to be caught guessing as he swung and missed a handful of times. Toolsy young player that has the skill set to stay at shortstop but could slot in at second base or in the outfield. Consistent defense needs to be achieved but with two years left in high school has time to elevate his game and potentially be on the 2021 MLB draft radar.
