3/20/22

With a near 70-grade arm on the pro scale and crazy strength to his game, Andy Nelson is an athletic specimen who oozes tools. His fast-twitch is noticeable from first look. He's a plus-plus runner underway and has the toolset to impact all areas of the game. However, it hasn't been easy developing these tools into performance. As a freshman last season he went 1-for-11 at the plate in limited action. So far this season, the third baseman is off to a strong start, batting .333 with a .542 SLG over his first eight games. His home run on Sunday boosted a 3-1 Hawkeye lead into 5-1 and came off a 95 mph fastball from Red Raider reliever Brandon Girton.

+ INF/OF Andy Nelson (Wheaton North HS, IL) showed well all weekend for the Chicago Scouts Association and finished with a flurry on Sunday. Nelson hit a solo shot in the semi-final game and also ran a 3.76 down-the-line on a bunt in the Championship game. The Iowa commit, plays the game hard and fast, floating around the bases and consistently looking to take the extra base.

2/10/19

Iowa commit. 6-foot, 180-pound, right-handed hitting/throwing multi-positional player, athletic, durable build. Easy speed for size, 6.61 runner in the 60. Defensively in the outfield, quick feet, steady hands, clean to release, plays through. Loose arm action, quick arm speed, high ¾ slot, throws topped 93 mph. Similar traits on the infield, quick actions, flashed multi-slot ability, accurate throws carried 91 mph across the diamond. At the plate, relaxed, open stance, short load and stride, maintains balance. Fluid path works uphill, barreled up baseballs, strongs hands create easy bat speed, exit velocity topped 97 mph from a tee.

9/23/18

Verbally committed to Iowa.

5/05/18

Six-foot, 165-pound, shortstop with a highly-athletic build and room to add quality strength. Defensively, is a high-follow 2020 shortstop. Smooth, easy actions, plays with confidence and is never in a hurry. Ranges well, with body control, soft hands and clean release. Made multiple plays on the move and can throw from multiple arm angles. Arm works loose and easy, gets carry across the diamond and is accurate. Offensively, right-handed hitter, athletic setup, simple swing. Finished 0-for-3 on the day. Glove is currently ahead of bat. Has all the tools to stick at shortstop in the future.
