6/5/14 - Currently ranked No. 63 in Illinois, No. 262 overall. Villanova recruit. 6-foot-5, 235-pound physical right-hander with workhorse pitcher’s build. Delivery shows some stiffness, especially in arm action. Throws from high ¾ arm angle with good downward plane when fastball was in the bottom half of the strikezone. Fastball sat 86-88 in first, dropped to 83-86 by third. Lost command of the zone leaving fastball up. Curveball sat 69-73 and couldn’t find it for a strike. Dropped elbow at times, and didn’t stay on top, getting around it, producing inconsistent at times sweepy shape. McCarthy has pure arm strength and throws a heavy fastball when its down, with a great frame. Needs to develop feel for a second pitch down the road.
2/17/13 - Large frame and build, 6-foot-6, 225-pound right handed pitcher. Delivery shows some rhythm, regular effort. Arm works from a high ¾ arm action, some stiffness. Fastball has slight run, sits 84-85 mph, touching 87 mph, showed control. Curveball has 12/6 tendencies, gradual action, arm speed decelerates, 65-66 mph. Change up has arm side run and sink, 68-71 mph, some deceleration in arm speed. Big frame projects well on the mound, a more aggressive arm action with secondary pitches will improve his repertoire.
6/12/12 McCarthy is a projectable 6-foot-6, 225-pound multi-positional talent who displayed upside on the mound, commanding three pitches. He displayed a fastball that topped at 83 mph and a curveball with a sharp 11/5 movement that sat in the 67-68 mph range. McCarthy also threw a 70-75 mph changeup with some sink. Defensively, McCarthy showcased an accurate arm from first base, topping at 80 mph.
