4.27.15 - 5-foot-9, 160-pound, right-handed hitting shortstop with a muscular, athletic build. Indiana commit, currently ranked No. 9 in the Illinois Class of 2016. At the plate hits from a narrow slightly open stance with a smooth load and an inside out approach. Solid contact in game, tends to stay open on contact, drove a double down the RF line driving in 2 runs, 4.76 on the turn. Showed fluid actions and lateral agility in pregame, did not get any action in game at shortstop.
8/1/14 - A late addition to Team Illinois saw his stock rise on a national level, and quite possibly was the top overall true shortstop at the 2014 Future Games. From day one, Houston showed smooth, athletic shortstop actions, and did not make an error over three games. He makes tough plays look easy, with plus range in the hole and up the middle. In game three against Team Indiana, Houston made one of the top defensive plays of the Future Games on a run through ball in the sixth inning. He also has lightning hands turning the double play, and the Houston/Matt Burch double play combination was one several college programs would like to have in a couple years. At the plate, Houston showed off his speed with a 4.0 time to first on a drag bunt in game three, that could have been faster had he not hit the back of the bag. He did not record a hit in three games, but showed a solid, contact orientated approach, walked three times, was hit by a pitch, scored two runs, and stole two bases. During the combine portion of the event on day one, Houston ran a 6.69 60, and threw 82 mph across the diamond, though his arm plays up due to his quick transfer from glove to hand and feel for the runner’s speed to first.
4/26/14 Ranked No. 21 in Illinois’ class of 2016, No. 84 overall. 5-foot-9, 150-pound listed height and weight with room for projection. Looked to have grown a little bit. Fluid actions and short quick arm, very similar to Ako Thomas. Solid double play combination for Coach Hurry and the Caravan in the upcoming years. Grounded out in two at bats to third, reaching base both times on errors. Stole second base, ran 4.36 to first on second ground ball. Looked mostly to pull against below average velocity.
Top-level athlete is younger brother of Jerry, a 2013 grad who is signed at Oregon.
