4/19/24

Position player-wise for the Cardinals, senior first baseman Ryan McCoy had a big weekend. After holes in his swing and approach were exposed last season as a first-year juco transfer, McCoy has shown recent improvements with his swing path and the ability to stay on and drive the ball the other way. He had three hits on Saturday, including two home runs and another three hits on Sunday with one more round-tripper. For the series the lefthanded slugger batted .500 (6-for-12) with three home runs and eight RBI, seven of which were from Saturday’s game alone.

7/15/22

2022 MLB Draft League: Louisville signee; McCoy's '22 Draft League campaign was short-lived; but even so, he showcased the same professional approach, contact quality and power potential that he did a year ago.

12/31/21

McCoy, a premium left-handed bat committed to Louisville, stood out like a sore thumb at the Wabash Valley Scout Day during his freshman season in the fall of 2020. He followed that up with a .379/.490/.734, 13-homer performance as a freshman and continued to rake (.267/.439/.450 with 41 BB) in the MLB Draft League this past summer. The 6-foot-3, 215-pounder employs a pro approach, showing advanced plate discipline and feel for the strike zone as well as excellent pitch-recognition skills. What's more, McCoy consistently impacts the ball with a clean, leveraged swing, showing effortless power to the big parts of the field. Altogether, he's a no-doubt Power 5 talent with Top 10 round draft potential.

9/21/20

When you hit left-handed, run a 6.88 sixty, have a strong, accurate arm, wear the tools of ignorance and slightly resemble Joe Maurer at 6-foot-3, 210 pounds scouts tend to take notice. And that’s just what they did as McCoy put on a show with his throws to 2nd base with POP times in the 1.9s and strong accuracy. At the plate, the lefty hitter has some leverage to his swing for developing power, but it’s ultimately his size, athleticism and defensive tools that provide the foundation for his value as a pro prospect.

Verbally committed to Wabash Valley JC.

4/22/19

Uncommitted junior, currently ranked No. 166 in the Illinois’ 2020 class. 6-foot-3, 190-pound, stong, physically-advanced left-handed hitter. Playing second base out of necessity, natural position is behind the plate. Regardless, left-handed bat, looks to be the calling card. Hits in the three-hole. Loose, fluid swing, easy bat speed, path has natural lift and ball jumps off the barrel at times. Finished 1-for-3 with two RBI and a walk. Follow 2020 left-handed bat.

2.18.19 - 6-foot-3, 190-pound left-handed hitting catcher, lanky frame with athletic actions. Present foot speed, moves well, 7.01 runner in the 60. At the plate, open setup, back load, knee lifted stride to even, rhythmic. Loose hands, path is short on an uphill plane, repeated hard contact. Above average bat speed, exit velocity topped 86 mph from a tee. Defensively athletic out the chute, pop times ranged 1.97-2.05. Sturdy hands, fluid feet, quick and clean to release. Arm plays short and clean, high 3/4 slot, ball carried to second with arm speed, topped 79 mph from the crouch, an event best.

2.19.18 - 6-foot-3, 170-pound, lanky, long limbed, left-handed hitting catcher. At the plate, tall, balanced setup, minimal hand load with a short leg lift stride. Fluid rhythm, loose hands, natural lift in swing, extension through the zone at times, flashed occasional pull power. 80 mph exit velocity from a tee. Defensively, pop times ranged from 2.11-2.18. Fluid footwork, gained ground, long exchange and arm action from a ¾ slot. Throws topped 75 mph to second base. Ran a 7.68 laser time 60.
