8.21.16 - University of Illinois-Chicago commit. 6-foot-3, 190-pound left-handed hitting outfielder. Offensively hits from a squared setup, slightly wider, no stride approach, heel lift load. Loose hands, level path with extension, line drive type hitter. Showed bat speed, 87 mph exit velocity from the tee. Defensively arm action is long and over the top, played at 83 mph from the outfield. Plays through the baseball, smooth actions, 7.02 runner.
4.27.15 - 6-foot-2, 170-pound lanky and athletic left-handed hitting 1B, impressed at the plate and defensively for the Vikings, ranked No. 40 in IL’s 2017 class. Farrell is hitting over .450 this spring from the leadoff spot, and impressed with three line drive singles in four plate appearances. He also barreled a baseball hard in his first at bat on a groudout up the middle, getting down the line in 4.29 seconds. Hits from a square, spread out stance, little to no stride, high back elbow, hands held around his head in setup, little hand movement to load, short path, up the middle/opposite field approach in this game. Two hits were line drives in left center gap, first hit was a line drive right back up the middle. Defensively, made a nice diving play down the line to his backhand, also chested up a tough hop. Premium athlete at first base, with the chance to be a well above average defender there. Speed, arm strength (up to 82 mph on the mound), and leadoff hitter profile could make him an outfielder at the next level as well. High follow prospect in the 2017 class.
1.18.15 - 6-foot-2, 175-pound lanky and athletic left-handed hitting OF/1B hits from a crouched, open setup, hands load back smoothly, good rhythm in loading body backwards, minimal stride, left-centerfield approach during batting practice, 84 mph exit velocity off the tee. Defensively, threw 80 mph from the outfield from long, high ¾ arm slot with accuracy, soft hands fielding the baseball, quick, fluid footwork. At first base, shows soft hands fielding ground balls, long arm action turning the double play, feet work well around the bag. Farrell’s athleticism fits more in the outfield, but lefty/lefty first baseman are not easy to find either. Ran a 7.19 60, high follow prospect in the 2017 class.
