5/6/14 - Ranked No. 78 in Illinois’ 2014 class.  Committed to Morehead State. Calderon’s first inning of relief was absolutely electric.  The 6-foot, 160 pound righty sat 89-91 comfortably, with significant arm side run from a whippy ¾ arm action, with some stab in back.  See scouting report on 4/18 Lemont game for mechanical analysis.  Since the Lemont game, Calderon ironed out his direction towards home plate with his lower half.  While he still has significant front side tilt, his lower half was in line with home plate early in this outing.  In previous outings I’ve seen Calderon throw significantly across his body.  Struck out the side in the first inning, even dropping down with two strikes producing even more run, still at a high velocity (87-88 the two times he did it).  Curveball has slurvy shape, but is thrown hard at 74-77.  Often times when body rushes, curveball lacks extension and is left up.  Arm slot looks conducive to a power slider one day.  After the first inning, Calderon’s fastball velocity sat between 86-89, dipping to as low as 84 when out of the stretch.  As in the Lemont game, he varies his leg lift and rushes out of the stretch (sometimes glide stepping), producing inconsistent fastball velocity.  Reaches back for extra velocity in two strike counts.  Flashed 75-76 mph change with slowed arm action, but good run, producing a flyout.  Due to size and ability to hold velocity, may be a lights out in shorter stints in relief or closing at the next levels.

4/18/14 - Morehead State commit, ranked No. 78 in the state of Illinois.  Small, wiry, 5-11, 160 pound frame, with long arms.  Electric low 3/4, whippy arm action. Front side shoulder tilt, reaches up with front glove side. Throws significantly across his body, making it tough for hitter’s to pick up ball. Fastball sat 88-90 mph in warm-ups. In game action, fastball fluctuated between 83-89.  Significant velocity drop to 83-84 out of the stretch when going to a glide step, as arm fails to catch up with body. Out of the windup and a higher leg kick, drops and drives producing higher end velocity 86-88, and consistency with location. Lower half and hands break away from home plate towards right handed batter’s box, then essentially pitches around a corner, getting extension. High energy, max effort delivery, but effectively wild and a tough at bat.

5/17/13 - Small, wiry 5-foot-11, 160-pound frame. Currently ranked No. 78 in Illinois’ 2014 class. Fastball ranged between 82-87 mph in early innings, 80-86 in later innings. Against Peoria Notre Dame, did not throw high-volume of strikes. Threw 37 pitches in first inning; 26 in the second. Curveball ranged between 71-74 mph, erratic with location. Arm works fluidly, ¾ slot, works across his body.

2/17/13 - 5-foot-11, 160-pound two way player. Possesses a lively arm. Delivery shows some rhythm, drop and drive style delivery, back side tends to collapse. Arm works well, ¾ to high ¾ arm slot, quick arm, gets underneath the baseball at times. Fastball has run, erratic life, 85-87 mph. Curveball has 11/5 shape, gradual action, thrown with similar arm speed to fastball, has the ability to throw for strikes, 67-69 mph. Change up has control, thrown with fastball arm speed, 71-74 mph. Defensively uses a long arm action from the outfield, long transfer and release, arm works at 81 mph. Offensively hits from open stance, good setup. Bat path is short, line drive swing, lacks strength.

1/22/12 Calderon was perhaps the biggest surprise of PBR Underclass Invitational. The 6-foot, 145-pound right-hander is slight of build, but he possesses tremendous quickness and acceleration.  Calderon, who operates from a 3/4 arm angle, has an extremely whippy arm action and hides the ball well. His fastball topped at 86 mph, sitting in the 84-85 range. He also flashed sharp, late bite on his 69-71 mph curveball. He also threw a 70-71 mph changeup. As a position player, Calderon had an accurate arm (78 mph) and showed feel up the middle. He also ran a 7.29 60.
