6/18/13
Kauffmann lived up to his Class of 2016 No. 1 billing. Threw well sitting 84-87mph with his fastball. Has plenty of upside. Calm cool demeanor with smooth delivery and easy arm. Polished. Breaking ball has tighter spin and feel for it (73-75mph). Will be attending the Midwest Futures Games.
2/9/13
Kauffmann may only be entering his freshman year but he showed why he will be one of the most highly sought after recruits in the 2016 class. The 6-foot-1, 180-pound Kauffmann is typically most lauded as a pitcher but he worked out in both the infield and on the mound. In the infield he demonstrated smooth clean actions and a strong arm across the diamond with good carry. At the plate he had a explosive bat speed and good balance. Finally on the mound, he was only 82-84 mph with his fastball but his delivery was smooth and rhythmic. Kauffmann's breaking ball was erratic at times but spun well and had good bite to it. It has an 11/5 downer action to it. Lastly, he carried himself extremely well and had an quiet confidence about himself. Kauffmann is certainly in the upper echelon of 2016 talent.
5/10/19: Athletic 6-foot-2, 200 pound righthander who throws from a high three-quarter slot with some effort to his delivery and a head snap at ball release. He featured a low-90s fastball, an 83-86 mph slider and an 85-87 straight changeup. His slider flashed above average at times, but was largely inconsistent throughout his five inning start. Kauffmann is a likely top 10 round pick this June. (Seifert)
8/20/18: Athletic, six-foot-two, 200 pound righty with a long arm action. Landed on-line and repeated his higher effort delivery. Stiff arm swing to a three-quarter slot. A former top prospect out of a Michigan high school, Kauffmann pitched with less velocity on this look than he showed me as a senior (consistent low-90s). In his July 21 start against Chatham, his fastball velocity ranged from 87-91 mph with plus sink at times. Below average control, struggled to hit spots and miss barrels. Best secondary offering was a firm 83-84 mph changeup, also showing good sink. Late action breaking ball was a near average pitch at 79-80 mph, but was not an out pitch type of weapon. Kauffmann finished the Cape season with a 5.40 ERA in 26.2 IP, walking 18 to go along with 20 strikeouts. As another returning weekend starting pitcher for Michigan this spring, along with Tommy Henry and Ben Dragani, look for Kauffmann to regain his velocity and control and pitch himself into the middle of Day Two draft consideration.
