The Sooners think he’s ready to make the leap to stardom in year four, and he certainly looked the part of a Big 12 ace in my fall look. A physical 6-foot-3, 217-pound righty with a clean, compact arm circle to a high release point, Davis attacked at 93-95 in his inning of work, mixing in a quality slider at 82-85 and a good changeup at 88. He checks all the boxes on paper; now he just needs to show that he’s as good as we all think he is.
Currently ranked outside of our Top 250, Davis will certainly climb somewhere into the middle of it for our next update. Possessing a 92-94 mph sinking fastball, he drove it downhill into the strike zone for consistent quality strikes. Strong and mature bodied at 6-foot-4, 225 pounds, the right-hander pitched from a high three-quarter slot showing arm strength and leverage in his delivery. His arm action was clean. He mixed four effective pitches in his fastball, above average 82-84 slider, fair spinning 77-78 curveball and his mid-80s changeup was a weapon against both righty and lefty hitters. None of the three were overpowering, but the mix created a tough at-bat for any hitter. He appeared twice in the series, yielding just one run in five combined innings. For the season Davis has struck out 12 in 10.1 IP, allowing six hits and three runs for a 2.61 ERA.
The 6-foot-4, 210-pound framed Oklahoma State commit did not have his best stuff on the mound, but still competed in the zone with four pitches. The fastball got into the low 90s a few times but was mostly 88-90 with cut to the glove side and run to the arm-side. The slider showed tight spin and late cut. The curveball has 11/5 shape and late depth, 75-76 mph. Davis threw all five innings giving up three runs on four hits and a walk while striking out nine. His future is surely on the mound, but Davis was also 3-for-3 in this one from the right-side.
A 6-foot-2, 190-pound athletic build, long limbs, proportional strength. On the mound, fluid delivery, good rhythm, over the top slot, upright finish. Fastball keeps its plane, 83-85, curveball has 12/6 shape, 70-73, slider has cutting action, 75-76. Defensively, at third base, athletic, clean actions, arm slot and strength translate well. Behind the dish, flexible hips, flashes signs of improved receiving, multiple 2.2 in game pops. Offensively, right-handed hitter, middle-pull approach, balanced, athletic stance, good rhythm, short stride. Short to the ball, extension through contact, bat speed.
