2018 PBR Future Games - Team Pennsylvania

10/28/18 - 6-foot-4, 215-pound Virginia Tech commit. Lefty sat 81-85 out of a high 3/4 arm slot with a low effort, repeatable delivery. Fastball is relatively flat, but is commanded well. Curveball shows some depth at 70-72 with 1/7 rotation. Changeup is an above average pitch at 71-72. The change is thrown at fastball arm speed with arm-side run and sink. A clean arm stroke and a physical frame should lead to additional velocity spikes over the next 18 months.

10/28/17 - 6-foot-4, 210-pound primary pitcher looks every bit his listed size in a uniform. The lefty impressed recently in front of our national scouting staff at the WWBA championships in Florida utilizing a compact, efficient delivery with a short, quick arm swing. Umberger sat 81-82 from a high 3/4 arm slot on this day with arm-side run to his fastball and much more in the tank. He displayed a fluid, balanced delivery with good sell on his changeup that showed late sink at 66-68. The curveball is still developing but was commanded well at 61-64 with some sweeping action. Umberger ran a 7.28 60-yard dash and flashed 89 mph arm strength from the outfield. The right-handed hitter starts from a slightly open stance and utilizes a controlled, lift-and-replace stride to initiate his swing. A short swing path with a solid hip turn results in a bat exit velocity of 84 mph. Showcased an above average feel for the barrel with present power to the pull side. Umberger has since been added to the Team Pennsylvania roster as a left-handed pitcher for the 2018 PBR Future Games.

10/13/17 - The Sophomore World Championship kicked off Friday in Ft. Myers, and although it was cut short by rain in the late evening, there were a plethora of standout performances beforehand. Stealing the show was a big left-handed arm out of Pennsylvania. 2020 LHP Grant Umberger (Downingtown East Campus HS, PA) is all of 6-foot-4, 210-pounds with a thick upper and lower half. The durable southpaw was dominant in a complete game, six-inning no-hitter. Umberger struck out seven while walking just two. He also hit two batters, but with the work that he did on the inner half, those were aggressive mistakes that he was willing to make. Utilizing a compact, efficient delivery with a short, quick arm swing, the ball seems to jump out of Umberger’s hand as he spotted his fastball at 80-83 to both sides of the plate. He also showed some feel for a breaking ball at 67-69 with somewhat sweeping action, though he manipulated the shape of the pitch depending on what the count was. The pitch is more of an average pitch right now, but played up at times because of the success he had with his fastball. His fastball effortlessly came out of his hand, and he showed an advanced ability to repeat his high-3/4 arm slot, which allowed him to be in the zone all game. With a short, quick arm and physical frame, there still looks to be much more in the tank for Umberger, and as he continues to progress with more innings in the future, he has a chance to be a starter at a high level.
