Austin Sharp
Director of Scouting

We continue our countdown of the Top Profiles of 2020 with No. 19 Grant Jay. Jay was at the 2019 PBR Future Games with Team Alabama and has recently committed to Dallas Baptist University.

One of the standouts at last year's Future Games, Jay presents some power from the right side and is a well-rounded defender behind the plate. His pop times range from 1.97-2.10 and his EV has been up to 95 mph at previous events. He his also a solid runner at 6-feet, 205 pounds, running a 6.92 at the Mobile Prospect ID event in 2019. Expect a big year offensively from Grant Jay this spring.

Scouting Report

10/06/19

We have seen Jay a multitude of times and all he does is show a plus offensive approach each time. There is present strength in the swing right now and he does this from a very controlled approach. Very compact and there is a small leg kick to create juice to all fields from a tilted swing path. Event best 95 mph exit velo and ran a 6.92 60. We have seen Jay at his primary position plenty of times and he went through workouts at this event at 3B and OF, showing off his versatility. Plenty of arm strength form the OF at 87 mph and the glove works well at 3B and was 83 mph across the infield. Plenty capable of performing well at his secondary positions

9/18/19

5-foot-11, 197-pound right-handed hitting catcher, durable frame, carries strength throughout. Offensively is a force at the plate, keeps it simple and quiet in his pre-pitch rhythm, short stride and a small hand load back, utilizes his core strength and legs. Advanced bat speed for age, whips it through the zone in an uphill path, ball jumps of the bat, elevates the ball with backspin, easy effort, will hit for power to all fields.

9/08/19

Physical ‘22 that looks the part and plays the part. Very strong core strength which allows him to stay balanced offensively. Has a very simple, compact approach and showed juice to all fields. No wasted action in the swing. Slightly open stance with a simple setup and there is some definite launch in the swing path. Had two of the loudest AB’s in the game with two hits, including a 2 RBI 3B that was crushed. Defensively, the pop times were low 2.0’s and throws to the 2B were accurate from a very quick transfer. Handled pitches in the dirt very well and showed quick recovery. A ton to like in this ‘22 grad.

6/25/19

One of the top performers at the event, Jay has all of the tools to become a top prospect in his class. At 5’11” 200 lbs., Jay showed present strength in his lower half during his BP round. Starts with an even stance and creates some tilt in his swing. Consistent line drives to all fields with backspin. Listed as a C/OF, Jay’s future is behind the plate. Pop times ranged from 2.03-2.07, but these will continue to improve as he works on his footwork and his arm gets stronger (75 mph). High-ceiling for this ‘22 C
