LATHROP, CALIF. - The Third Annual California State Games took place at beautiful Islanders Field in Lathrop where PBR California hosted over 70 of the top under and upperclassmen from around the state. While some were committed prospects, the bulk of the participants were uncommitted prospects hand picked for this exclusive event.

Click here to view Les Lukach 10 highlighted uncommitted players from the California State Games.

The three-day event featured a workout on Friday followed by games on Saturday and Sunday. With just about every facet of the game captured by the scouting staff, it becomes necessary to put pen to paper and write-up each respective player in a scouting report. Following those that play on the dirt are those that play on the highest point on the field.

pitchers

Luke Baker, San Ramon Valley  (CA), 2024
Positional Profile: RHP
Body: 5-10, 175-pounds. Medium build with broader shoulders. Some present strength in the frame. Chance he grows into a corner infield build.
Delivery: Simple delivery. Side steps into a medium knee lift. Glove hand works up and down which case some uphill shoulders. Not much lower half usage. Shorter stride. Lands inline with home. Average knee at landing.
Arm Action: RH. Compact arm with a stab in the back. Comes out of the H 3/4 slot. Average arm speed. Shorter extension at release. Consistent arm speeds on all pitch types. Threw two shutout innings in game action getting 1K.
FB: T78, 75-77 mph. Pounded low and away in the zone with the FB. Didn't give hitters anything to good with it.
CB: 64-68 mph. Stayed low in the zone with this as well. Matched slot and arm speed. Induced some weak contact.
CH: 67-69 mph. Slightly lower slot. Lower spin CH. Some present fade.

Isaiah Barrett, St. Mary's (Stockton) (CA), 2022
Positional Profile: RHP
Body: 5-8, 165-pounds. Smaller athletic frame. Some present strength in the lower half.
Delivery: Athletic delivery. Delays upperbody/torso as long as possible. Medium knee tuck. Rotates body fast. Front leg and glove hand work rotationally starting at third base side and wrapping back in line. Stays connected into back hip as he moves down the mound. Good fielding position at landing.
Arm Action: RH. Really pulls back into scalp. Compact arm circle in the back that you can see out the back. Comes out of an over the top slot. Decent arm speed that accelerates at release.
FB: T85, 83-84 mph. Consistent glove side feel. 12:30 tilt helped give it some decent VB at around 19 inches. FB proved tough to square up because of that
CB: 72-73 mph. Only spun 1 CB during game action that had slurvy break and had decent spin at around 2400.

Langston Burkett, Santa Cruz  (CA), 2023
Positional Profile: RHP
Body: 6-5, 240-pounds. Large frame, starters build, long limbs, more to come, presence on the mound.
Delivery: Old school over-the-head delivery, trouble finishing his pitches out in front, stayed in line with target well. Showed some good overall feel for pitching but with lots to developed and worked on.
Arm Action: RH. Showed flashes of a power arm, no question he will throw in the low 90s to potential mid-90s someday. Inconsistent follow through likely more command-related than arm speed. Arm did well-holding angle for off-speed pitches.
FB: T86, 83-85 mph. Worked the fastball all over the zone, missed bats with fastballs up, extension and size plays up current velocity. 2201 spin rate is another positive indicator of a projectable arm.
CB: 71-73 mph. Conventional curveball but with a very good spin rate average of 2450 and max of 2554. Three of five strikeouts were on the curveball.
CH: 78 mph. Developmental changeup, speed and spin are similar to the fastball to really offset hitters but headed in the right direction. Gave up a hit on a changeup left up in the zone but also got an easy groundout on the same pitch two batters later.

Thomas Egbert, Serra (CA), 2024
Positional Profile: RHP
Body: 6-0, 155-pounds. Lean build with long limbs. High waisted. Projectable with gains.
Delivery: Smooth and clean delivery. Side steps into a higher knee tuck that works quickly down the mound after. Glove hand works high which angle the shoulders more uphill. Decent energy down the mound that is in line throughout. Finishes still moving towards home and slightly falling towards first.
Arm Action: RH. Loose arm. Full arm circle in the back that gets to an H 3/4 slot. Some decent arm speed that accelerates as it gets up. Doesn't slow down arm on offspeed. Struck out 4 in his 3 innings of work.
FB: T83, 78-82 mph. Decent spin for velo. When missed it was up in the zone. Higher tilt at around 12:30 led spin to increase vertical break that averaged around 20 inches.
CB: 65-67 mph. Only spun 3 and 2 were for strikes. More slider-like due to more present HB break and 8:30 tilt.
CH: 73-75 mph. Around equal HB and VB break. More HB break than fastball that showed with some present arm side fade.

Matthew Foley, Amador Valley  (CA), 2024
Positional Profile: RHP
Body: 6-3, 170-pounds. Long and lanky, projectable pitchers build, plenty of room for growth.
Delivery: Stays tight overall, back knee bend with leg lift, lands slightly across body, finishes towards home plate with some balance.
Arm Action: RH. Average high school arm speed from a high 3/4 arm slot. Medium arm swing, speed consistent throughout, glove clearance slows arm follow through.
FB: T80, 77-79 mph. Fastball located predominately to the arm side, side-to-side consistency needed, produced groundballs.
CB: 68 mph. Slurvy breaking ball located mainly to the arm side. Good speed differential from fastball with enough break to offset timing. Ground ball contact.
SL: 71-75 mph. Developmental pitch with varying pitch speeds. At times read similar to curveball and other times read similar to a cut fastball.
CH: 71 mph. Showed some potential with quality speed and spin differential. Natural arm side run and fade.

Logan Gibson, Enochs  (CA), 2022
Positional Profile: RHP
Body: 5-10, 160-pounds. Real athletic build. Well proportioned. Broader shoulders. Present lower half strength.
Delivery: Quick side step into a higher knee lift. Slight hip hinge and rides down the mound hard and fast. Slight pulldown with his higher front shoulder. Average stride. In line throughout. Decent hip shoulder seperation and lead leg block at landing.
Arm Action: RH. Loose and quick arm out of the 3/4 slot. Comes out the back where you can see it. Accelerates well into release. Consistent arm speeds on all pitch types.
FB: T84, 78-83 mph. Some trouble locating. Glove side feel. 12:30 break: Fingers getting on top.
CB: 71-74 mph. Only threw 3 in the outing and all three were strikes. Slightly lower slot. More slurvy break due to 8:00 tilt and present HB break.

Ben Giovannetti, Woodside (CA), 2022
Positional Profile: RHP
Body: 6-0, 210-pounds. Large and sturdy build. Some present strength but can hold more and gain athleticism.
Delivery: Relaxed and repeatable. Mostly arm. Controlled lift that works down and in line with home. The backside comes through at release. Bent landing leg at finish.
Arm Action: RH. Loose whippy arm. 3/4 slot. Pulls into the scalp and gets into a higher elbow that gets inverted. Decent armspeed. 3 shutout innings and 3Ks in game action.
FB: T79, 75-78 mph. Threw it to all quadrants. Didn't miss by much when missed.
CB: 60-64 mph. Only spun 3. Showed nice location low and away to RHHs.
CH: 69-71 mph. Real low spin change at around 1000 rpm. Big drop in VB gives it late diving life. Same armspeed as FB.

Luke Kalfsbeek, Colusa  (CA), 2024
Positional Profile: LHP
Body: 6-2, 172-pounds. Long and lean build. Higher waist. Present athleticism. Highly projectable.
Delivery: Simple and repeatable delivery. Smaller knee tuck. Keeps the front side in good direction. Lower and upperbody move in sync. Bent front knee at landing with momemtum still taking him forward.
Arm Action: LH. Full arm circle in the back. Ball gets shown to second. Glove hand workouts up which cause more uphill shoulders. Pulls down. Arm accelerates late in the action. H 3/4 release. 3 shutout innings in his outing with 6 Ks.
FB: T81, 76-80 mph. Flashes of good spin for velo at around 2100 rpm. Thrown to all quadrants. Extension at 6.6 ft is above major league average and gives his FB some added perceived velo.
CB: 67-70 mph. Present HB break gives it more of a slurvy profile. Average around a 3:00 tilt. Worked well down and in against RHHs.
CH: 71-76 mph. Only threw 3 in the outing and none for strikes. Showed more armisde run than FB with some fade as well. Kept same armspeed as FB.

Cooper Lanz, Buhach Colony (CA), 2022
Positional Profile: RHP
Body: 5-11, 170-pounds. Slight frame, proportional throughout, displayed loose athletic baseball actions.
Delivery: Quiet mechanics, high leg kick, slinging arm action, finishes inline and balanced with home plate.
Arm Action: RH. 3/4 arm slot, loose arm, quick arm action, good tempo, repeatable. Worked quickly, pounded the zone, same arm speed with fastball and curveball.
FB: T89, 86-88 mph. 1:30 tilt, 2200+ spin, sneaky fast feel from low arm slot, significant arm side run.
CB: 72-73 mph. Slurvy action, 8:30 tilt, swing and miss, can use in any count.

Cole Leschak, St. Marys College (CA), 2024
Positional Profile: RHP
Body: 5-10, 165-pounds. Wiry frame, lower half flexibility, slightly undersized for ideal starter, more to come.
Delivery: Comes set staggered, some Lincecum/Bauer feel to his pitching. Hides the ball well, activates backside, sits in hip well, creates above-average extension. Delivery shows highly likely velocity increase.
Arm Action: RH. Short and quick in the back, hides the ball well, quality extension and follow-through in the front.
FB: T81, 79-80 mph. Fastball shows some life to it along with arm side run. Pitched garnered swing and miss up in the zone. True four-seam fastball needed to reach full velocity max.
CB: 66-70 mph. Delivery makes curveball inconsistent but also helps create true swing and miss action. Development, growth and practice will only make this pitch better.
CH: 69-73 mph. Significant pronation plays up the pitch, +potential, arm side parachute swing and miss fade.

Corban Lopez, Franklin  (CA), 2022
Positional Profile: RHP
Body: 6-1, 170-pounds. Slim build with projectable lankiness.
Delivery: Confident look and feel, slight rock back, leg kick does not get to 90 degrees more like a modified slide-step. Keeps his head online, front leg firmly planted, falls off first base side.
Arm Action: RH. Medium arm swing with average arm speed, repeatable pitch-to-pitch, offspeed pitches from similar arm slot.
FB: T79, 76-78 mph. Heavy dosage of fastballs, commanded the pitch throughout the zone, got hurt when left up in the zone, garnered a lot of contact.
CB: 62-63 mph. Curveball showed conventional break, velocity and spin. Quality high school pitch that can be relied on more.
CH: 74-75 mph. Some run and fade. Speed and spin differential will need to decrease from fastball to become more effective.

Gabriel Lopez, Arcadia (CA), 2024
Positional Profile: LHP
Body: 5-10, 165-pounds. Proportional build, long limbs, narrow shoulders, room for growth.
Delivery: Starts on the third base side with narrow feet, glove off his body, leg lift with lean back, opens up early exposing ball.
Arm Action: LH. Average arm speed, short arm swing in the back, shows the ball early, consistent follow-through in the front.
FB: T79, 76-78 mph. Fastball worked up in the zone, consistent velocity, low spin.
CB: 67-68 mph. Curveball plays off fastball with sub-five miles per hour velocity. Back foot break shows swing and miss potential and good spin. Trust this pitch.                                                          CH: Flashed two changeups, showing some arm-side fade, developmental pitch.

Joshua Manness, Olympian (CA), 2022
Positional Profile: RHP
Body: 6-4, 195-pounds. Pro frame; broad shoulders, long limbs, strong hands, baseball athleticism. Plenty of room for growth and development.
Delivery: Over-the-head out of the windup, high and tight leg lift, athletic knee bend, good extension, fairly consistent pitch-to-pitch, falls hard to the first base side at times.
Arm Action: RH. Medium arm swing, arm follows leg lift, room for more speed in the follow through.
FB: T87, 84-86 mph. Fastball shows good spin in the 2300 range, lacking consistent command, works best down in the zone.
CB: 72-75 mph. Flipped over curveballs for another breaking pitch look. Working linear and giving a slower offspeed pitch to compliment his slider and changeup.
SL: 73-74 mph. Slider is his best breaking pitch; more velocity and more spin helping project this pitch at the next level.
CH: 77-79 mph. Ideal velocity and spin differential from fastball. Garnered swings and misses, hard downward fade.

Xavier Marquez, San Leandro (CA), 2023
Positional Profile: LHP
Body: 6-0, 170-pounds. Lean pitchers build, flexible throughout, room to fill out.
Delivery: High leg kick, off-set out of the stretch, stays tight, repeatable delivery, balanced throughout. Good feel for four-pitch mix.
Arm Action: LH. High 3/4 arm slot, repeatable arm action, lost some arm speed towards the end of his outing. Struck out 4 batters, walked 2, 2 hits, 2 ground ball outs.
FB: T81, 77-80 mph. Located fastball to all four quadrants, 10;45 tilt, 15.5 IVB (slight ride) and -12.1 (above-average cut) give his fastball unique movement, making it tough inside on RHH and tough away on LHH.
CB: 61-65 mph. Most used off-speed pitch, good overall feel, located to both sides. Low spin and low velocity makes this a command and control curveball that needs to on point pitch-to-pitch.
SL: 70 mph. Developing pitch, higher spin and tighter break than curveball, continued development could garner more swings and misses.
CH:  Good speed and spin differential from fastball. IVB 10.4 (significant sink) and HB -16.5 (extreme cut) give this pitch ideal movement off his fastball and should be used more.

Arm Action: RH. Consistent arm swing, average arm speed, offspeed worked from same slot, balanced follow through.
FB: T88, 85-87 mph. Pounded the zone with fastballs to all quadrants, 50/50 with the fastball up - yielding hits and strikeouts, two-seam could help.
CB: 74-76 mph. Good feel to both sides of the plate, some swing and miss potential, staying on top key, tough to time.
CH: 76-77 mph. Quality speed and spin differential from fastball, swing and miss strikeout, trust this pitch.

Bobby Romitti, Vista del Lago (CA), 2022
Positional Profile: RHP

Delivery: Compact delivery, keeps glove and ball tight to body, 90 degree leg lift balance and glove side staying closed key to success. Finishes toward homeplate, head inline with target, average extension.
Arm Action: RH. Consistent arm speed from medium swing with low effort overall. Arm has trouble catching up when sitting to much on the backside. Consistent arm slot for breaking ball.
