Florida Class of 2022 Rankings Update

Rocco Iervasi
Florida Director of Operations/Area Scout

The Class of 2022 is another loaded one coming out of the state of Florida. Last week’s National Rankings update saw three prospects from the state of Florida in the top 11. There are some young arms that have added velo and will continue to do so throughout the next two years. The Class of 2022 also features some elite athleticism and impact bats from both sides of the plate.

There is a new No. 1 prospect in the Florida Class of 2022. LHP Brandon Barriera (American Heritage, Vanderbilt) takes over the top spot after making a significant jump over the last year. His fastball was 88-89 mph at the 2019 Preseason All-State, and now up to 93 mph this spring. The 6-foot-1, 165 pound southpaw adds a slider and changeup that will continue to raise his ceiling as a pitcher.

At No. 2 comes OF Elijah Green (TNXL Academy, Miami). Green might have the highest ceiling in the entire 2022 class. His elite athleticism and raw power have a chance to really make an impact at the next level. Green should be able to stick in center fielder with his 6.6 speed and very projectable 6-foot-2, 205 pound frame.

3B Sal Stewart (Westminster Christian, Vanderbilt) remains third in the Florida Class of 2022. At 6-foot-2, 200 pounds, Stewart moves well and is an above average defender at third with a strong arm. Stewart swings the bat well from the right side with the ability to drive the ball gap-to-gap. At No. 4 is SS Colby Shelton (Bloomingdale, Clemson). Shelton has been a big riser over the last year and continues to show his upside as a prospect. Left-handed bat that has started to show power potential. Defensively, Shelton moves athletically and has soft hands with an above average arm. Rounding out the top five is OF Jordan Taylor (SJCD, Florida State). Taylor is a raw athlete at 6-foot-2, 175 pounds that has developed some power from the right side. Above average arm from the outfield. Overall, the tools are raw but he has a ton of upside.

Outside of the top five, we have two big risers that have entered the top ten for the first time. RHP Jake Clemente (North Broward Prep, Florida) has made a big jump in these rankings all the way up to No. 6. He stood out this winter at the Cannons Baseball Academy tryouts where his fastball jumped to 92 mph. He committed to Florida shortly after the event. Jumping up to No. 10 is SS Blake Cyr(Windermere, Miami). Cyr was a huge standout at the Preseason Classic this year where he seemed to find the barrel in every plate appearance. He showed the ability to drive the ball gap-to-gap and showed off above average tools defensively.
