Top 20 Profiles of 2020: No. 8 Dylan Lonergan

Phil Kerber
Georgia Scouting Director

The countdown marches on! It is only fitting that on the day we release our updated and expanded 2023 rankings, the No. 2-ranked prospect in the state is the center our attention. The No. 8 most viewed profile of 2020 belongs to RHP Dylan Lonergan (Brookwood, 2023). Lonergan is one of the top arms in the country in addition to being one of the top QBs.

A member of Team Georgia the 2020 PBR Future Games, Lonergan showcased just why he is one of the best in the country. A number of things standout about him. First is the frame. Lonergan is built like very few are, a large 6-foot-2, 208-pound frame with advanced strength throughout. Second is how effortless everything is, from his arm action to his delivery to his fastball. Sitting in the low-90s, it looks like Lonergan is just playing catch as he zips 92 past unsuspecting hitters.

Scouting Report

2020 PBR Future Games

6-foot-2, 208-pound right-handed pitcher, physically advanced in all areas, strength throughout frame. A dual sport athlete one of the top ranked QBs in the country. Arm works with some length and a slight cup of the wrist on the back-side, loose, whippy arm speed, consistently gets out front to a 3/4 slot with easy effort. Tall and fall delivery, controlled actions and intent behind it, uses his powerful lower half well down the mound, works on-line, lands and finishes square. Fastball is elite, sat 88-91, touched 92, lulls you to sleep with how effortless it is, running action. Curveball, 12/6, depth, 78-79, if thrown with more conviction, has the makings of an out pitch, Changeup, 77-80, fading action, generates weak contact with. What standouts the most about Lonergan is his mound presence. He is an intimidating figure and goes about his work in a very business like manner, attack the zone.

4/30/19

6-foot-1, 180-pound right-handed pitcher with a stronger lower half. Possesses premium arm strength with little effort. Topped out at a tournament-best 87 mph, pitched at 83-85. Works out of the stretch only. Clean, full arm path coming through a high-3/4 slot; loose and athletic out front. Ball comes out of the hand super-easy. Repeats delivery well for age, slightly closed landing. Fastball played mostly true; still developing strike zone consistency. Toggled the shape of his breaking ball, ranging between 74-77 mph. When thrown harder it flashed signs of being a wipeout offering in the future. Also mixed in a 78-79 mph changeup occasionally. Results didn’t match pure stuff on this look, but with the ease at which he generates premium velocity at his age, Lonergan should continue to develop as a high-level power arm in the future.
