2022 PBR Second Team All-State

Just a few days ago, the PBR Illinois team released its First-Team All-State honors for the 2022 IHSA season. Today, we’re announcing the recipients of our Second-Team All-State honors. Given the amount of talent residing in the state, the Second-Team roster is stacked with selections representing all corners of Illinois.

Keep an eye out tomorrow when we release our Third-Team All-State.

But for now, and without further ado, here is the roster for the 2022 PBR Illinois’ Second-Team All-State.

PITCHERS

Parker Detmers RHP / Glenwood, IL / 2023

Louisville commit. Detmers is one of the top pitching prospects in the Midwest for the 2023 class and he helped lead Glenwood to the 3A state championship game with a dazzling complete game masterpiece in the semifinal. He struck out 103 batters over 59 innings, pitching to a 9-2 record with a 2.61 ERA and 1.05 WHIP. Detmers’ ascent throughout the spring has him firmly on the 2023 MLB Draft radar as an integral summer circuit begins. 

Nick Drtina RHP / 1B / Nazareth Academy, IL / 2024

Louisville commit. Drtina helped anchor the 3A state champion Roadrunners’ pitching staff throughout the spring season, racking up 12 wins and breaking a 25-year school record at Nazareth in the process. He toed the rubber in the state championship game and earned a win, tallying 61 ⅓ innings in total this spring. Over that span Drtina allowed only 11 earned runs, good for a 1.24 ERA, with 72 strikeouts and 1.13 WHIP.

Zachary Kwasny RHP / 3B / Lincoln-Way East, IL / 2023

Uncommitted. The 6-foot-5, 220-pound staff ace dominated for Lincoln Way East on the hill, winning seven games over 57 total innings. Kwasny broke the school’s single-season strikeout record with 95 and he did so while only walking 14. Kwasny posted a 1.47 ERA and 1.07 WHIP, allowing only 12 earned runs in total. He also slashed .341/.423/.549 with four home runs and 24 RBIs in 82 at-bats.

Dominic Voegele RHP / SS / Columbia , IL / 2023

Uncommitted. Voegele was the heart-and-soul of Columbia’s state-bound squad, leading the charge for the Eagles on both sides of the ball. He absolutely dominated on the hill, striking out 113 batters over 65 innings, including a dominant 12-strikeout outing in the 2A Super-Sectional victory over Freeburg. Voegele went 9-3 on the season with a 1.62 ERA and 0.83 WHIP, throwing four complete games and a no-hitter. An all-conference selection, Voegele slashed .393/.478/.675 with 22 extra-base hits, 35 RBIs, and nearly four times as many walks (21) as strikeouts (6).

CATCHERS

Colin Barczi C / Naperville Central, IL / 2023

Vanderbilt commit. Barczi turned in one of the louder spring seasons to date, crushing 13 home runs en route to back-to-back ‘Conference Player of the Year’ honors. He paced a Naperville Central team that spent a large chunk of the spring in our ‘Power 25’ rankings at the plate, batting .482 with a .619 on-base percentage and 1.764 OPS. Barczi finished with 25 total extra-base hits, 31 RBIs, and he also walked 28 times.

Hayden Christiansen C / Richmond-Burton, IL / 2022

Xavier commit. Christiansen led the Rockets to a 31-win season and a runner-up finish at the 2A state playoffs with a ridiculously impressive offensive spring that culminated in ‘Conference Player of the Year’ honors. One of the best bats in the Illinois’ 2022 class, Christiansen’s .553 batting average and .643 on-base percentage were amongst the highest in the entire state. He homered 11 times, tying a school record, and his 63 hits are more than anybody on our second team all-state. Christiansen drove in 50 runs, scored 62 of his own, and walked 15 more times than he struck out - all while swiping 10 bags in the process.

FIRST BASEMAN

Tommy Townsend 1B / Sycamore, IL / 2023

Uncommitted. Townsend’s powerful spring season helped Sycamore make a deep run into the 3A state playoffs and earned him ‘Conference Player of the Year’ honors. The left-handed hitter tied the school record for home runs in a season with nine and finished the season with 20 total extra-base hits, including 10 doubles. Townsend slashed .443/.525/.828 this spring and drove in 40 runs, scoring 35 times on his own. He played an integral role on the mound for Sycamore as well, tossing 23 innings with seven saves, a 0.60 ERA, and 34 strikeouts.

MIDDLE INFIELDERS

Owen Housinger SS / Stevenson, IL / 2022

Wisconsin-Oshkosh commit. Housinger helped lead Stevenson to a successful 25-win season and even took home our final ‘Player of the Week’ honors for the 2022 IHSA season. Housinger batted .441, the highest mark of this trio, and his 46 RBIs also pace the group. He reached base at a .491 clip and chipped in a bit in the power department as well, homering four times with 14 doubles to pair.

Nolan McMasters SS / Glenwood , IL / 2022

Illinois-Springfield commit. McMasters was an integral piece to a Titans team that won 33 games and finished as the 3A state runner-ups a few weeks ago. His power-surged senior season was headlined by 28 total extra-base hits, including nine home runs and 17 doubles. McMasters scored 54 times and brought home 38 runs in total. He finished the year slashing .415/.536/.822 and drew 31 walks, stealing 13 bags as well.

Estevan Moreno SS / Montini Catholic, IL / 2022

Notre Dame commit. Moreno is another upper-tier prospect in a loaded Illinois’ 2022 class and he capped off his high school career with a dominant senior season. Moreno clobbered 10 home runs and totaled 29 extra-base hits, including 14 doubles and five triples. He batted .410 with a .516 on-base percentage and his .890 slugging-percentage is the highest of any middle infielder selected on one of our all-state teams. Moreno scored 47 runs and drove in 38, too.

THIRD BASEMEN

Luke Adams 3B / Hinsdale Central, IL / 2022

Michigan State commit. Adams was his usual dominant self for Hinsdale Central throughout the spring, bashing six home runs and batting .482 on the season in 85 at-bats. Adams reached base at a .564 clip and made his presence felt when he reached base, swiping 22 total bags. Adams finished the year with 17 extra-base hits, good for a .859 slugging-percentage, and he drove in 30 runs while scoring 31 times on his own. He also tossed 21 ⅓ innings for the Red Devils, punching out 28 batters with a 1.64 ERA. Adams took home PBR Illinois ‘Player of the Week’ honors this season and he was named the West Suburban Silver Conference Player of the Year, too.  

OUTFIELDERS

Brayden Bakes OF / Huntley, IL / 2023

Wichita State commit. Bakes was the top offensive performer on a Huntley team that comfortably sat towards the top of the Power 25 rankings for the entire season, earning Fox Valley Conference Player of the Year in the process. He finished the year slashing .448/.576/.908 with 23 total extra-base knocks, including eight home runs. Bakes drew 21 walks and scored 47 runs, bringing 35 home on his own. He’s one of the top left-handed bats in the Illinois’ 2023 class and proved that this spring.

Jack Lausch OF / Brother Rice, IL / 2022

Northwestern football commit. Lausch may have been the most valuable player on Brother Rice’s team, getting it done at the plate and in the field for the Crusaders. The left-handed hitter batted .386 with a .521 on-base percentage, homering five times and finishing with 18 extra-base hits. Lausch scored 51 runs for Brother Rice and was dynamic on the basepaths, stealing 33 bases this spring. He did all of that while providing the Crusaders with elite defensive value in center field and saw time on the mound as well. Lausch is a top-100 prospect on a national level.

Angelo Luna OF / St. Laurence , IL / 2022

Illinois-Springfield commit. Luna put up video game numbers in the highly-touted Chicago Catholic Blue conference. The right-handed hitter posted a .437 average with six home runs, three triples, 17 doubles, 56 RBIs, 50 runs scored and swiped 14 bases. Luna was the cornerstone in a lineup that was already stacked from top to bottom and provided extremely reliable defense in center as well. Luna’s year was good enough to be named First-Team All Chicago Catholic League Blue; also setting St. Laurence’s all-time single season record for RBIs (56) and ranking second all-time in hits, runs scored and doubles.

Brandon Rogers OF / Mount Carmel, IL / 2022

Oklahoma commit. After missing the 2021 season due to injury, Rogers came to us this winter for the Preseason ProCase and gave us a glimpse of what was about to come this spring. The physical right-handed bat turned in a .478 batting average to go along with six home runs, six triples, 13 doubles, 34 RBIs and 50 runs scored - all while playing a majority of his competition in the Chicago Catholic Blue conference. The raw tools Rogers possesses makes him one of the more exciting players to watch in all of Illinois, and the numbers he put up slots him comfortably in the second wave of our All-State release.

UTILITY

Hayden Brazelton OF / LHP / St. Joseph-Ogden , IL / 2022

Kaskaskia JC commit. Brazelton helped power St. Joseph-Ogden to an overall record of 35-3 on the season thanks to his dominance both with the bat and on the mound. The L/L outfielder put up a .538 batting average while slugging six home runs, six triples, 15 doubles, 47 RBIs, 71 runs scored and swiping 28 bases. On top of these already impressive numbers, Brazelton broke the school's record for hits in a single season (64), runs scored, batting average and RBIs - also slotting eighth all-time in the IHSA for runs scored and top 20 in the IHSA all-time for hits in a single season. On top of all the offensive success, Brazelton also pitched his way to a perfect 8-0 record with 42 innings, 83 strikeouts and an ERA of 1.16.

Gus Lucas LHP / OF / Washington Community , IL / 2022

Bradley commit. Lucas was part of the dynamic duo of Bradley commits that helped send Washington to State this past spring. The southpaw pitched his way to an 11-2 record with 63.2 innings, 110 strikeouts and an ERA of 1.75. He also hit his way to an average of .418 with one home run, four triples, 12 doubles, 34 RBIs and 34 runs scored. These numbers were good enough for Lucas to be named First-Team Mid-Illini All-Conference, and now Second Team All-State.

Tony Pluta RHP / C / St. Viator, IL / 2022

Arizona commit. The right-handed hitter was one of the more intimidating bats in the state this past spring, recording a batting average of .463 with seven home runs, one triple, 15 doubles, 27 RBIs, 38 runs scored, 18 stolen bases and 40 walks to just 15 strikeouts. When he wasn’t dominating at the plate, Pluta could be found on the mound; pitching to a 3-1 record with 28.1 innings, 54 strikeouts and a 3.45 ERA. On top of his Second-Team All-State honor, Pluta was also named ESCC Conference Player of the Year, ESCC Offensive Player of the Year and Co-Caption All-Area. Pluta was no doubt a driving force in St. Viator’s success and 35-3 record on the season.
