PBR Illinois Player Of The Week: RHP/3B Scott Youngbrandt

In our final edition of the PBR Illinois Player of the Week for 2018, we’re awarding the weekly honor to Andrew’s Scott Youngbrandt. The Thunderbolts’ right-handed pitcher and third baseman starred in his team’s 6-3 win over Lockport on Saturday to help them to a Regional title. Youngbrandt got the start on the mound and hit from the four-hole for Andrew, where he went off.

He allowed a first-inning run on the mound but helped immediately yank back the lead with a three-run home run in the bottom of the inning. Lockport scored two more in the third inning, but Youngbrandt did well to keep the lead after pitching out of an even more precarious situation. He held the Porters scoreless for the rest of the game and added a second homer – a solo shot – in the fifth inning to give Andrew a 6-3 lead, where the game would ultimately finish.

Youngbrandt finished the game 2-for-2 with a walk, two homers, and drove in four of his team’s six runs. On the mound, he allowed just three runs in six innings of work on four hits, no walks, and he struck out nine Porters.

The Saint Louis commit has been a force within the Thunderbolts’ lineup all season, and has been predictably great on the mound. He’s the No. 17-ranked prospect within Illinois’ state class for his tenacity on the mound and feel for four pitches. His ability at the plate has just been an added boon for Andrew, a team on its way to a Sectional semifinals contest with Marist this evening in Lockport.

Stay tuned for our Weekly Diamond Notes that will be published this Friday. There we’ll take a look at players who narrowly missed out on a Player of the Week honor but deserve some recognition nonetheless.
