Southern Illinois Prospect Games: Outfielder Analysis

Many of the outfield prospects showed the ability to run and throw at the Southern Illinois Prospect Games. Listed below we ranked the top three outfielders from the event.

TOP OUTFIELDERS

1) Gabe Schimpf, OF/LHP, Zeigler-Royalton, 2017
5-foot-9, 155-pound, two-way player, right-handed hitter. Hits from a tall, narrow stance, short stride, good balance. Average bat speed, short, level bat path, 78 mph exit velocity. Defensively showed soft hands, clean exchange, plays through the ball. Short arm action, high ¾ arm slot, with accuracy, 80 mph from the outfield. Ran a 4.44 home-to-first. On the mound the lefty displayed short arm action, high ¾ arm slot, some rhythm, landing slightly open. Fastball showed some arm-side-run, sat 78-80 mph. Feel for a curveball, had 1/7 shape, gradual break, 65 mph. Slider showed sharp brake at 72 mph. Changeup 64 mph. 

2) Noah Farmer, OF/RHP, Massac County, 2017
6-foot-3, 165-pound lanky two-way player. On the mound throws from over-the-top, long arm action, regular effort, clean delivery, square landing, and in line direction. Fastball was 79-82 mph, curveball was 70-72 mph with some sharp action, and changeup was 77 mph. Offensively, hits from tall setup, loads back, long stride, quick bat speed, and pull type. Exit velocity was 84 mph. Defensively, has long loose arm action, over-the-top, accurate, has some carry on ball. Showed clean exchange and plays thru. Threw 85 mph from outfield.

3) Cole Cimarolli, OF, Edwardsville, 2016
5-foot-10, 165-pound, strong build, right-handed hitter. Hits from a balanced set up, short stride, lower half can work, average balance. Above-average bat speed, level bat path, gap-to-gap approach, 84 mph exit velocity. Defensively, displayed average hands, clean exchange, ability to play through the ball. Short arm action, high ¾ slot, with accuracy, some carry, 83 mph from the outfield. Ran a 4.43 home-to-first time.

Ryan Brink, SS/2B/OF, Nashville, 2017
Long limbed, athletic, projectable frame, 6-foot-2, 160-pound right-handed hitter. Impressed during game play, lacing a triple to right center off an 83 mph fastball. Offensively, starts with a tall setup, early load, leg-lift timing mechanism. Bat stays flat through the hitting zone. Recorded a 76 mph exit velocity and was 4.97 home to first. Defensively, from the outfield Brink was clocked at 83 mph, above average for his age.  Throws from a ¾ slot with a long, loose arm. Throws had arm-side run and were accurate. Also, worked out on the infield. Quick transfer and showcases a shorter arm action than from the outfield.  Clocked at 75 mph across the infield.

Brendan Joyce, OF, St. Charles North, 2016
5-foot-11, 175-pound athletic outfielder. Offensively, hits from the right-hand side. Balanced, athletic setup. Smooth, rhythmic load, with a big leg-lift trigger. Hands get into a powerful position pre-pitch. Line-drive hitter with an up-the-middle approach. Doesn’t try to do too much. Hammered a triple in game play and was 4.75 on the turn. Registered a 72 mph exit velocity off the tee. Defensively, had fluid feet and a clean exchange from the outfield. Throws stayed true and had carry. Clocked at 82 mph from the outfield.

Thomas Larson, OF/3B/, Families of Faith Christian, 2017
6-foot-1, 185-pound athletically built right-handed hitter. Defensively has long arm action from over-the-top slot, some accuracy, some carry on ball, and average hands. Threw 81 mph from outfield and 78 mph across infield. Offensively, hits from balanced athletic and tall setup, no load, short stride, ok lower half, average balance, and short path. Exit velocity registered 86 mph.

Bryce Osman, OF/LHP, Anna-Jonesboro, 2018
Projectable frame, 6-foot, 170-pound left-handed hitting outfielder. Hits from a wide, square, crouched setup. Starts with his hands back and uses a leg lift trigger. Not a lot of movement in swing, stays within himself. 73 mph exit velocity off of a tee. From the outfield the left-handed thrower has a short arm action from a high ¾ arm slot and showed some accuracy. Clocked at 78 mph from the outfield.

Chase Owens, OF, Benton, 2016
5-foot-10, 170-pound, average build, right-handed hitter. Hits from an open set up, lower half can work, average balance. Level bat path, line-drive approach, 65 mph exit velocity. Defensively showed a quick exchange, ability to play through the ball. Long arm action, high ¾ slot, some accuracy, 76 mph from the outfield. Ran a 4.51 home-to-first.

Skyler Peterman, OF/SS, Carbondale, 2017
Projectable frame, long, lanky build, 6-foot-2, 165-pound right-handed hitting outfielder. Offensively, creates whip in swing. Starts from a tall, balanced setup. Uses a short, slight leg kick trigger. Flashed the ability to barrel baseballs to the pull side of the diamond. 76 mph exit velocity off of the tee. Defensively, attacked and played through the baseball. Throws from a high ¾ slot with a long arm action. Clocked at 74 mph from the outfield.

Brandon Rutherford, OF/1B, Mount Vernon, 2017
6-foot, 165-pound is a rare right-handed hitting, left handed throwing outfielder.  Wiry, athletic build with quick hands at the plate. Starts from an open, wide base. Short stride and maintains balance through contact. Bat stays flat through the zone, high one-handed finish. 73 mph exit velocity off a tee and was 4.68 home to first. Defensively, attacks the baseball from the outfield. Fluid feet and a clean exchange.  Throws from a high ¾ arm slot. Clocked at 76 mph from the outfield.

Kyle Sailliez, OF/SS, Frankfort, 2016
5-foot-11, 195-pound, strong, athletic build. Opened some eyes running a 4.26 home to first from the right-side of the plate. Hits from an athletic set up, short stride, average balance. Average bat speed, short, level bat path, 80 mph exit velocity. In the outfield, displayed soft hands, long arm action, and over-the-top arm slot. Clocked at 84 mph from the outfield. Defensively, on the infield, showed a long exchange and registered 76 mph across the infield.

Jackson Shepherd, OF/RHP, Minooka, 2017
5-foot-10, 165-pound athletically built right-handed hitter. High hands, balanced and wide setup at the plate. Slight leg lift with a long stride. Uses the whole field and maintains balance through contact. Has an uphill swing path at times. Recorded an exit velocity of 81 mph off the tee.  Impressed in the field with a long, loose arm that topped at 81 mph.  Throws also flashed carry. Long, clean transfer in the outfield. Ran 4.45 home-to-first.

Mason Smith, OF/RHP, Woodlawn, 2018
5-foot-10, 140-pound, two-way player, left-handed hitter. Hits from a tall set up, short stride, lower half works linear, average balance. Level bat path, 60 mph exit velocity. Defensively showed long arm action, ¾ arm slot, threw 68 mph from the outfield. Ran a 4.51 home-to-first. On the mound had long arm action, low ¾ arm slot, some rhythm, landing square. Fastball had arm-side-run, sat 67-70 mph, touched 71 mph. Curveball had 11/5 shape, 60-62 mph. Changeup 60-63 mph.
