Underclass Open: Preview Story

By: Diego Solares
Area Scout, Illinois & Missouri

On Tuesday, June 7, the PBR Illinois staff will kick off our summer tour with the Underclass Open, held at Triton College in River Grove, Illinois. Previously touted as the Underclass Trials, this event has been a staple on our summer calendar since 2014. It routinely provides us an opportunity to check see prospects prior to the summer circuit kicking off, and this year’s event will feature players from the 2024-to-2026 grad classes.

2022 ROSTER

This year’s roster is shaping up nicely, and we’re eager to see the improvements that several players have made throughout the high school season, as well as a handful of fresh faces for the first time.

There’s a few uncommitted sophomores that have caught our attention thus far into the season set to attend. LHP/1B Beau McBride (New Trier, 2024) is a physical 6-foot-3, 210-pound prospect with two-way intrigue, flashing advanced bat strength at the plate and a fastball we’ve seen up to 84 mph. His high school teammate, RHP Jack Wilson (New Trier, 2024), strung together a polished ‘pen at the O’Hare Preseason ID, bumping his fastball up to 82 mph and throwing all four of his pitches around the zone.

Another uncommitted sophomore to highlight is INF Jude Warwick (Downers Grove North, 2024). We recently highlighted Warwick in our ‘On The Bubble’ 2024 rankings article and he caught our scouts attention this IHSA season with a projectable frame and feel for his left-handed barrel, as well as clean defensive actions on the infield.

From the 2025 class, C/RHP Quinn Schambow (Libertyville) represented Team Illinois at the PBR Junior Future Games last summer and is headed to River Grove on Tuesday. The 6-foot, 180-pound Schambow owns a clean right-handed stroke and above-average arm strength for his age, topping at 77 mph from behind the crouch and 81 mph on the mound last summer. ‘

CHECK-IN PROCESS

In an effort to continue and develop contactless check-in strategies, upon arrival, players will scan a QR Code with their smartphone camera that will lead them to a Google Form. On that Form, players will enter their name (matching the spelling on their PBR profile) and hit submit. Upon submission, players will be prompted to click a link that will direct them to their jersey color and number, located next to their registered name.
