Underclass Trials: Pitcher Analysis

The Prep Baseball Report Underclass Trials took place on Thursday, June 11th indoors at the MAX in McCook, IL. This event featured 2017 and 2018 graduates, and acts as an identifier for this summer’s prestigious PBR Future Games powered by Under Armour.
89 underclass prospects came together to show off their skills in front of the PBR Scouting Staff in a pro-style workout setting.

Let’s take a look at the top pitchers from this year’s Underclass Trials:
Top Pitchers
1. Evan Tenuta, RHP/3B, Sandburg, 2018
5-foot-11, 165-pound athletic two-way player. Defensively has loose and clean arm action, ¾ slot, showed some accuracy, and a clean exchange. Threw 81 mph across the infield. Offensively has balanced setup, loads hands back, short stride, and average balance. Takes uphill path and has average bat speed. Exit velo 77 mph. Ran 7.78 60. On the mound, throws from ¾ slot, quick arm speed, long and loose arm action, with regular effort. Fastball sat 80-81 mph with some sink, slider was 68-70 mph with 11/5 shape, and changeup was 70-71 mph with some sink. Tenuta is a pitcher to follow in the 2018 class.
2. Ben Cornelius, LHP/1B, Lake Zurich, 2018
5-foot-11, 187-pound strong two-way player. On the mound, throws from high ¾ angle, quick arm speed, loose action, easy effort, tall-fall type. Smooth rhythm, level shoulders, in-line direction and square landing. Fastball sat 78-79 mph and touched 80 with occasional run and is thrown for strikes, curveball was 64-66 mph with 1/7 shape, sharp action, and thrown for strikes, changeup was 71-73 was some arm-side-run. Offensively, hits from open setup, loads hands back, short stride, and good balance. Has fast bat speed, good approach, uphill path, and pull type. Exit velo 75 mph. Defensively has good feel for first base, short and loose arm action, high ¾, soft hands, fluid footwork, and clean exchange. Threw 68 mph across infield. Ran 8.52 60. Cornelius projects well and is a high follow on the mound.
3. Andrew Golde, LHP/OF, Lake Forest, 2018
5-foot-10, 150-pound, projectable, two-way player, lanky and athletic with plenty of projection remaining. Hits from the right side, open stance, loads hands back, average balance. Slightly above-average bat speed, long, level bat path, 76 mph exit velocity. In the OF showed fluid footwork, clean exchange, ability to play through the ball. Short arm action, some carry, 82 mph from the OF. Ran a 7.39 60-time. On the mound showed a high ¾ arm slot, smooth rhythm, landing square. Fastball showed arm-side-run, sat 77-79 mph, touched 80. Sweeping slider, 2/8 shape, 64-68 mph. Changeup, some cut, 70-71 mph.
4. Austin Troemper, RHP, Springfield, 2017
6-foot-1, 165-pound right-handed pitcher is lanky with a good build. Threw from high ¾ arm angle, long and loose arm action, some rhythm, level shoulders. Fastball sat 78-79 mph and touched 80, curveball was 64-66 mph with 12/6 shape, sharp and late action, changeup was 73-75 mph, and threw a slider 69 mph. Troemper projects well on the mound in the 2017 class.
5. Marshall Rice, RHP/3B, Geneseo, 2017
6-foot-1, 170-pound athletic and lanky two-way player. On the mound the righty showed over-the-top arm angle, short arm action, and straight up and down leg lift. Slow tempo, level shoulders, in-line direction, and square landing. Fastball sat 78-80 mph and touched 82, curveball was 61-64 mph, and changeup was 63-65 mph and thrown for strikes. Defensively showed long arm action from over-the-top slot, some accuracy, average strength and average hands. Threw 78 mph across infield. Offensively, hits from right side, balanced setup, short stride, average balance, pull type, and average bat speed. Exit velo was an event best 91 mph. Ran 7.39 60.
5. Roy Iversen, RHP/3B, Oak Park-River Forest, 2017
6-foot-3, 160-pound lanky two-way player. On the mound, showed an over-the-top arm angle, quick arm speed, long action, regular effort, and tall-fall type. Showed some rhythm, in-line direction, and had a square landing. Fastball sat 79-80 mph and touched 81 with sink, curveball was 66-68 mph with 11/5 shape and thrown for strikes, changeup was 71-73 mph with sink. Defensively, long and loose action, over-the-top slot, and average strength. Threw 77 mph across infield. Offensively, open setup with short and even stride, average balance, average bat speed, and takes level path. Exit velo 69 mph. Ran 7.43 60.

Jimmy Allen, SS/RHP, Timothy Christian, 2018
5-foot-10, 140-pound, lanky build, right-handed hitter. Hits from a balanced set-up, drops hands on load, toe-tap stride. Average bat speed, level bat path, line drive approach, 77 mph exit velocity. Defensively showed soft hands, ability to play through the ball. Long, loose arm action, high ¾ arm slot, 78 mph across the infield. Ran a 7.25 60-time. On the mound displayed a high ¾ slot, long arm action, lands square. Fastball sat 76-78 mph. Curveball had 11/5 shape, 57-61 mph. Changeup sat 65-66 mph. Splitter sat 64-66.
Joe Bogdan, LHP, Hinsdale Central, 2018
6-foot-5, 155-pound tall and lanky left-hander. Throws from high ¾ angle and sometimes over-the-top and has short arm action. Fastball sat 64-65 mph and touched 66. Curveball was 52-56 mph with some 12/6 shape, and changeup was 57-59 mph with some arm-side-run and some sink. Slide step from the stretch.
Bradley Breunig, OF/RHP, Glenbard West, 2018
5-foot-11, 185-pound right-handed two-way player. Defensively throws from right side, over-the-top slot, some accuracy, average hands, and sometimes long exchange. Threw 68 mph from outfield. Offensively hits from right side, balanced setup, toe-tap stride, average bat speed, long path, and decent balance. Exit velo off tee was 81 mph. Ran 8.74 60. On the mound, throws from over-the-top with short arm action, some effort and some rhythm. Fastball sat 71-73 mph and touched 75, curveball sat 62-64 mph with 11/5 action, and changeup sat 68-70 mph with occasional sink.
Nicholas Cinquepalmi, SS/RHP, Brother Rice, 2018
5-foot-9, 161-pound, two-way player, right-handed hitter. Hits from a crouched, narrow stance, hands load back, average balance. Average bat speed, opposite field approach, 75 mph exit velocity. Defensively showed average hands, fields ball deep, long arm action, ¾ slot, some accuracy, 70 mph from SS. Ran a 7.81 60-time. On the mound works from a ¾ slot, loose arm action, smooth rhythm, landing square on line. Fastball showed arm-side-run, 71-73 mph, 74 mph. Curveball had 11/5 shape, sweeping action, 64-66 mph. Changeup showed sink, sat 65-68 mph.
Jaime Fuentes, SS, Joliet West, 2016
5-foot-10, 180-pound, strong lower half, right-handed hitter. Hits from a balanced set-up, loads hands back, short stride. Average bat speed, long bat path, opposite field approach, 83 mph exit velocity. Defensively displayed average hands, short arm action, high ¾ arm slot, 76 mph across the infield. Ran a 7.31 60-time. On the mound had a high ¾ slot, long arm action. Fastball had some run, 77-80 mph. Curveball had 11/5 shape, 61-63 mph. Change up sat 69-74.
Garrett Gillund, C, McHenry West, 2018
5-foot-10, 160-pound, right-handed hitter. Hits from a balanced, wide set-up, loads hands back and up, short stride. Average bat speed, long path, opposite field approach, 71 mph exit velocity. Behind the plate showed long arm action, high ¾ slot, with some accuracy, pop time ranged from 2.44-2.53, 66 mph from the crouch. Ran an 8.43 60-time. On the mound works from a ¾ arm angle with a long arm action. Tall and fall online delivery with a square landing. Fastball sat 66-68 topping out at 70 mph. Changeup sat 61-63 mph.. Curveball sat 59-61 mph.
Pierce Jones, OF/RHP, East Richland, 2018
6-foot, 135-pound right-handed two-way player. On the mound, throws from high ¾ with quick arm speed, short and loose arm action, easy effort. Shows smooth rhythm, level shoulders, and good balance. Fastball sat 73-75 mph and touched 77 with cut, curveball sat at 62 mph with 11/5 shape, and changeup sat 69-71 mph. Offensively hits from right side, balanced setup, short stride, average balance and long, level path. Exit velo off tee was 70 mph. Defensively, long, loose arm action, high ¾ slot, average hands, and occasionally plays thru. Threw 71 mph from outfield. Ran 7.72 60.
Evan Jordan, OF/RHP, Champaign Centennial, 2018
5-foot-11, 150-pound right-handed two-way player. Defensively has short arm action, high 3/4 , average hands and average strength. Threw 78 mph from outfield. Offensively hits from balanced setup, short stride, and fair balance. Average bat speed, short path, gap-to-gap type. Exit velo off tee was 82 mph. Ran 7.77 60. On the mound, throws from high ¾ angle, in line direction, and square landing. Fastball sat 73-74 mph and touched 75 with occasional cut, curveball sat 63-66 mph, and changeup sat 66-68 mph.
Jeff Korus, OF/RHP, Barrington, 2017
5-foot-10, 175-pound, two-way player, average build. Hits from an open stance, short stride, average balance. Above-average bat speed, short, uphill bat path, 84 mph exit velocity. Defensively showed slightly above-average hands, high ¾ arm slot, some carry, 85 mph from the OF. Impressed running a 7.05 60, should continue to get faster as he fills out. On the mound displayed a quick arm, short arm action. Straight fastball, sat 77-78 mph, touched 80. Curveball had a 12/6 shape, 60-63 mph. Knuckleball sat 61-62 mph.
Ethan Krumwiede, RHP, Batavia, 2017
6-foot, 160-pound right-handed pitcher. Throws from high ¾ arm angle, regular effort, short arm action and showed some athleticism. Fastball sat 72-74 mph with some right and slight action, curveball was 59-63 mph with 11/5 shape and gradual action, and changeup was 66-67 mph.
Tyler Labedz, RHP/SS, TF South, 2018
6-foot-3, 155-pound, right-handed hitting RHP/SS. On the mound works from a high ¾ arm angle with a long arm action and wrap on the backside. Tall and fall delivery with a closed landing. Fastball flashed sink at 76-78 mph. Curveball showed 12-6 shape at 56-58 mph. Changeup flashed fade at 60-63 mph. Defensively has a short arm action from a ¾ arm slot. Accurate throws with average arm strength and slower actions. Threw 70 mph across the infield. Offensively has a balanced setup with a short stride and average bat speed. 78 mph exit velocity from a tee. Ran the 60 at 7.91.
Simon Lane, RHP, Hinsdale Central, 2019
5-foot-9, 160-pound, right-handed pitcher. On the mound works from a high ¾ to over the top arm slot with a short arm action. Drop and drive online delivery with easy effort. Fastball flashed sink at 71-74 topping out at 75 mph. Curveball sat 56-57 mph. Changeup sat 61-62 mph.
Jimmy Mack, C/RHP, Glenbard West, 2018
5-foot11, 158-pound, right-handed hitter. Hits from a balanced setup, showed a slight leg-kick. Showed a long bat bath, 73 mph exit velocity off the team. Behind the plate showed a ¾ arm slot, short arm action, pop time ranged from 2.25-2.44, throwing 65 mph from the crouch. Ran a 8.2 60-time. On the mound displayed long arm action, tall-and-fall delivery, landing square, in line. Threw fastball for strikes, sat 70-72 mph. Curveball had 11/5 shape, 46-48 mph. Changeup sat 53-55.
Alex Mahaz, RHP/3B, Hampshire, 2017
6-foot, 175-pound right-handed two-way player. Offensively hits from balanced setup, leg lift during stride, and average balance. Takes level and long path to ball and average bat speed. Exit velo 84 mph. Defensively, short arm action, over-the-top slot, average hands and showed some accuracy. Threw 72 mph across infield. Ran 7.43 60. On the mound, high ¾ arm angle, short arm action, max effort, and tall-fall type. Fastball sat 73-74 mph and touched 76, curveball was 67-68 mph with 11/5 shape and gradual action, changeup was 70-72 mph with slight fade.
Nathen Martinez, 3B/RHP, Westminster Christian, 2018
5-foot-9, 200-pound right-handed two-way player. Defensively, has long arm action from high ¾, average strength, and average hands. Threw 73 mph across infield. Offensively, this from open and balanced setup, leg lift stride, and average balance, and average bat speed. Exit velo 76 mph. Ran 8.17 60. On the mound, threw from high ¾ angle, short arm action, tall-fall type. Fastball sat 73-74 mph with occasional cut, curveball was 59-61 mph with 11/5 shape and gradual action, and changeup was 67-69 mph with some fade and was able to throw for strikes
Austin Matuszewski, SS/RHP, Lake Zurich, 2018
5-foot-8, 165-pound, small frame, strong build, right-handed hitter. Hits from a wide stance, uphill bat path, 75 mph exit velocity. Defensively showed short arm action, high ¾ arm slot, 71 mph from SS. Ran a 7.26 60-time. On the mound displayed a high ¾ arm slot, short arm action, landing square. Fastball sat 70-73 mph, touched 74 mph. Curveball had 11/5 shape, sat 61-63 mph. Changeup sat 67-69 mph. Slider at 66 mph.
Matt Mier, SS/RHP, Tri-Valley, 2018
6-foot-2, 185-pound, left-handed hitting SS/RHP with a lanky, projectable frame. In the field has a long arm action from an over the top arm slot. Slower actions with a long exchange. Threw 72 mph across the infield. At the plate hits from a wide base, with a short load to back side and short stride. Pull hitter with a long swing path. 82 mph exit velocity from a tee. Ran the 60 at 7.56. On the mound works from a high ¾ arm angle. Long arm circle in back and short out front. Tall and fall online delivery with a short stride. Uphill shoulders and a square landing. Fastball sat 69-71 topping out at 72 mph. Curveball showed 11-5 shape at 61-63 mph. Changeup sat 64-68 mph. Will continue to develop with maturity.
Hunter Murawski, 3B/RHP, Reed Custer, 2017
5-foot-10, 160-pound right-handed two-way player. Defensively, long and loose arm action, ¾ slot, showed some accuracy, and had carry on ball. Showed average hands with fluid footwork, clean exchange, and mostly plays thru. Threw 77 mph across infield. Offensively hits from right side, crouch setup, toe-tap stride, takes uphill path, and is gap-to-gap type. Exit velo 85 mph. Ran 7.59 60. On the mound, throws from ¾ slot, long and loose arm action, and tall-fall type. Shoulders stay closed, in-line direction, and has square landing. Fastball sat 73-76 mph and touched 77, curveball was 63-65 mph, and changeup was 71-74 mph with occasional fade.
Brandon Olion, OF/LHP, Champaign Centennial, 2018
5-foot-11, 130-pound lanky outfielder. Offensively hits from left side, balanced and wide setup, toe-tap stride, usually takes short path, gap-to-gap type. Exit velo off the tee was 77 mph. Defensively has smooth and short arm action from high ¾, average hands and showed some accuracy. Threw 73 mph from outfield and ran a 7.79 60. On the mound, the left-hander throws from over-the-top angle, shows regular effort, tall and fall type. Falls to third base side. Threw a fastball that sat 65-66 mph and touched 68, curveball sat 56-60 mph had 1/7 shape and gradual action, and changeup sat 58-60 with occasional sink.
Billy Pierce, RHP, Plainfield East, 2018
6-foot-2, 180-pound, right-handed pitcher with a solid frame. On the mound works from a high ¾ arm angle with a long arm action and slight stab in the back. Tall and fall delivery with toe up at balance point. Works across his body with an athletic finish. Fastball sat 77-78 mph. Curveball showed 11-5 shape with gradual action at 64-65 mph. Changeup sat 67-70 mph.
Andrew Pounder, RHP/OF, Homewood-Flossmoor, 2018
5-foot-10, 150-pound right-handed two-way player. Defensively, has average hands and usually plays thru. Threw 74 mph from outfield. Offensively hits from right side with slightly open stance, short stride, and good balance. Average bat speed and takes level path. Exit velo off the tee was 74 mph. Ran a 7.86 60. On the mound, throws from over-the-top angle, short arm action, and in line direction. Throws fastball that sat 72-74 mph with occasional cut, slider sat 63-65 mph and hard changeup that sat 71 mph with some sink.
Collin Rogiers, RHP/1B, Alleman Catholic, 2018
6-foot-3, 180-pound strong two-way player. On the mound showed high ¾ slot, short arm action, regular effort, tall-fall type, some rhythm and in-line direction. Fastball sat 74-76 mph and touched 79, curveball was 61-65 mph with 12/6 shape, and changeup was 64-66 mph with sink. Defensively showed long arm action from high 3/4 , some accuracy, and average strength. Threw 73 mph across infield. Offensively, hit from right side with open setup, big leg kick, and average balance. Exit velo 84 mph. Ran 7.64 60.
Anthony Scanlon, RHP, Lake Central (IN), 2018
5-foot-10, 145-pound right-handed pitcher. Throws from ¾ arm angle, long and loose arm action, some rhythm, showed regular effort. Fastball sat 72-73 mph and touched 75 with arm-side-run, curveball was 61-65 mph, and changeup was 63-65 mph.
Matthew Schwartz, C/RHP, Naperville North, 2017
6-foot-1, 175-pound catcher. Offensively hits from right side with an open setup, decent lower half and average balance. Takes uphill path to ball, opposite field tendencies, average bat speed. Exit velo off tee was 78 mph. Defensively showed short, high ¾ slot, and fluid footwork. Pop times ranged 2.22-2.33. Threw 71 mph from behind the plate. Ran 7.83 60. On the mound throws from right side with fastball sitting at 78 mph and curveball at 65-66 mph.
Josh Silverman, SS/RHP, Brother Rice, 2017
6-foot, 145-pound, right-handed hitting SS/RHP. In the field has a short arm action from a high ¾ arm slot. Average arm strength with average hands and slower actions. Threw 71 mph across the infield. At the plate hits from a balanced setup with a smooth load and short stride. Average bat speed with a short swing path. On the mound works from a high ¾ arm angle with a short arm action. Tall and fall delivery with cross fire action. Level shoulders with some rhythm. Fastball flashed occasional sink at 74-76 topping out at 77 mph. Curveball showed 11-5 shape with gradual action at 59-60 mph. Changeup flashed cutting action at 63-66 mph.
Zach Zentz, LHP, Mundelein, 2017
5-foot-10, 160-pound, left-handed pitcher. On the mound works from a sidearm angle with a short, loose arm action. Creates a tough angle on hitters. Drop and drive delivery, bends at the waist, closed landing, with a tall finish. Fastball showed run at 75-76 topping out at 77 mph. Showed good feel for curveball with 2-8 shape for strikes at 65-67 mph. Maintained fastball arm speed on changeup at 68-71 mph.
